Neither game requires you to play the other first. Choose Fallen London for a free, text-led introduction to the shared world; choose Sunless Sea if you would rather captain a ship through an exploration-and-survival game. Knowing the setting can add context to Sunless Sea, but Failbetter Games says it is not a prerequisite.
How the two games differ
| Game | Format and focus | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Fallen London | A browser-based, text adventure in which choices shape your character’s fortunes in a strange underground London. | Free browser play on desktop or mobile, according to Failbetter Games. |
| Sunless Sea | A standalone Gothic-horror RPG about captaining a steamship, exploring the unknown, and surviving its dangers. Frequent death is part of its design. | A paid digital game; its price and availability can vary by storefront and region. Steam’s listing identifies it as an exploration-focused RPG. |
They share the same dark Victorian-Gothic universe, but offer different ways to experience it. Fallen London centers on text, decisions, and city stories; Sunless Sea puts navigation and survival at the center.

Which one should you play first?
Start with Fallen London for text and a no-cost entry
If you enjoy reading, making narrative choices, and exploring a setting through stories, Fallen London is the natural starting point. Failbetter describes it as a free, text-based browser game and says its story content includes 4.5 million handcrafted words. That word count is the developer’s own figure, not an independently audited total.
Start with Sunless Sea for ship exploration and survival
If you want a more distinct navigable game loop—taking a ship into the unknown and managing the risks of exploration—start with Sunless Sea. Failbetter presents discovery, loneliness, and frequent death as defining features. The game released on Steam on February 6, 2015, according to Valve’s listing.

- 🛟EASY TO PLAY – You and your fellow castaways are stranded out at sea after having experienced a very unfortunate shipwreck. Abhorrently selfish and absolutely merciless behavior is the only thing that will ensure your survival.

Choose either if you want to avoid a lore prerequisite
There is no required sequence. Fallen London released first, in 2009, but release chronology does not mean it must come first. Failbetter’s FAQ says prior play is emphatically not necessary to enjoy Sunless Sea, though familiarity with the universe can enrich the experience. The FAQ dates to 2013, so it supports the intended narrative independence of the games—not a claim about current account or platform mechanics. Read the FAQ.

Do not approach them as a connected save-file sequence. The older FAQ says characters do not transfer directly, while some non-core choices and stories could carry across. Because that FAQ is from 2013, it should be read as a description of the narrative relationship the creators intended, not a guide to current account features. You can begin either game without first establishing a character in the other.
Check platform availability before buying
Fallen London is currently described by Failbetter as playable in a browser on desktop or mobile. For Sunless Sea, check the live listing for your preferred storefront and region: prices, promotions, and platform availability can change. Failbetter announced console and iPad releases in April 2020, but that historical announcement does not establish present-day availability in every store or region. See the announcement.

Is Sunless Sea’s combat a reason to choose differently?
Combat is part of the ship-based experience, but it is not the only point of comparison. In a 2015 postmortem, Sunless Sea creative director and lead writer Alexis Kennedy reflected that “The real-time combat wasn’t nearly as polished as if we’d done it from the beginning.” He described changes that connected combat more closely to survival, resource management, ocean layout, and hazards. That is a specific retrospective on the game’s development, not a verdict on the whole game.
