PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhen component prices are high, put the largest share of a gaming-PC budget toward a graphics card that matches your games, monitor resolution and frame-rate target. Choose a capable, sensibly priced CPU to support it, then balance memory and storage against what you actually play and do. The right balance depends on local prices and your display—not on a single “best” parts list.
Start with the graphics card and the display
The graphics processing unit (GPU) usually has the biggest influence on gaming performance. Compare measured frame rates in the games and at the resolution you care about, rather than relying on product-tier names alone. Tom’s Hardware’s GPU benchmarks hierarchy separates results by resolution and discusses matching a GPU to a display.

Your monitor determines how much of a graphics card’s performance you can use. Consider resolution and refresh rate together: a card that is a good fit for a high-refresh 1080p display may not deliver the same experience at 1440p, while a costly upgrade may bring little visible benefit if the display cannot show higher frame rates or detail.
Compare candidate GPUs using these factors:
- Benchmarked frame rates at your intended resolution, including the games you play.
- Your display’s refresh rate and the frame rate you want to reach.
- The price available in your country at the time you buy.
- Ray-tracing performance, if you use ray tracing.
- Whether upscaling or frame-generation features suit you, including their image-quality tradeoffs.
Tom’s Hardware excludes upscaling and frame-generation results from its GPU hierarchy tables to keep direct benchmark comparisons consistent, then discusses those features separately. Native benchmark results are useful for like-for-like comparisons, but they do not describe every feature a card may offer.

- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
Spend on the CPU to support your gaming workload
The central budget decision is not “GPU or CPU” in isolation: it is whether the processor can keep the chosen graphics card fed in the games and settings you use. A very high-end CPU is not automatically the best purchase for a constrained gaming build if that money would be more useful in the GPU. Conversely, a powerful GPU can be held back by a CPU limit in some games or settings.
Tom’s Hardware’s CPU benchmarks hierarchy includes gaming rankings based on 1080p scores and processor prices. Treat those rankings as one comparison point, not a universal forecast: results vary by game and resolution, and the hierarchy’s 1080p gaming scores do not directly predict every 1440p or higher-resolution experience.

If the PC will also handle heavily threaded tasks, such as demanding production workloads, account for those alongside gaming when comparing processors. Otherwise, compare gaming results and actual street prices, and avoid paying a premium for CPU performance your games and other workloads will not use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBalance RAM and storage against real needs
Memory and storage still matter, but their prices are part of the current budget pressure. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 gaming PC build guide reports rises in RAM, graphics-card and storage prices, and uses example choices for specific budget tiers. Those examples are not universal capacity requirements or a guarantee of the best-priced build for your location.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Set aside enough budget for the memory and storage your selected games and other uses need, but compare the cost of those choices with the gaming improvement an alternative GPU or CPU would deliver. The available evidence does not establish one RAM or SSD capacity as the right choice for every buyer, so a precise parts recommendation requires your games, workload, country and current component prices.
Use hardware surveys as context, not a shopping checklist
Tom’s Hardware reported Valve’s July 2026 Steam Hardware Survey on 4 August 2026. The report says 16GB GPUs accounted for 25.9% of surveyed users and 8GB GPUs for 25.32%; 8-core CPUs accounted for 27.85%, and 6-core CPUs for 27.52%. It combines Steam instances on Windows, Linux and Mac. These figures describe surveyed Steam users; they do not show what an individual game requires or what you should buy.

The Steam Hardware & Software Survey is useful for seeing what surveyed users have, not for setting minimum specifications. Choose components from game-specific performance evidence and your own requirements rather than treating common hardware as a target.
A practical way to prioritize a high-cost build
- Set the target. Write down your country, budget, main games, display resolution, refresh rate and desired frame rate. Note whether ray tracing or non-gaming work matters.
- Compare GPU results at that resolution. Use measured game performance and current local prices. Include feature tradeoffs if you expect to rely on upscaling or frame generation.
- Choose a CPU that fits. Compare gaming performance and price, and account for heavily threaded work only if you will do it. Do not mistake a 1080p ranking for a prediction across all resolutions.
- Price RAM and storage with the rest of the system. Use your game library and workloads to guide capacity; do not treat another build’s example parts as a rule.
- Recheck the balance before buying. Compare the complete component costs available to you and make sure the monitor can display the performance you are paying for.
Prices and stock change quickly, and Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 build-guide brackets—$900, $1,200, $1,700, $2,100 and $4,000+—are its US-oriented guide tiers, not universal budgets. Its guide reports raising those tiers amid higher RAM, GPU and storage prices. Treat them as dated context, not a current quote or a recommendation for your region.
