The difference is what drives the game most of the time. A 3D action platformer centers on moving through three-dimensional spaces—jumping, dodging hazards and often fighting enemies. A collect-a-thon centers on searching for and gathering a varied set of items, often to unlock progress or rewards. A platformer can include plenty of collectibles without collection being its defining activity.
Start with the main gameplay loop
To classify a borderline game, ask what it repeatedly asks the player to do. If the main challenge is timing jumps, navigating hazards, mastering movement or fighting through a course, “3D action platformer” is a useful description. If the ongoing objective is to explore spaces and find a range of objects, “collect-a-thon” better describes its structure.

Logan Martin’s 2024 student paper defines a 3D platformer as a game that uses platforming—jumping from one point to another—as its main mechanic in three-dimensional space. That is one author’s definition, not an industry-wide standard. Read the paper.
| Question | Action-led 3D platformer | Collect-a-thon emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| What is the main challenge? | Traversal, timing, hazards, combat or movement mastery | Searching, exploring routes and finding varied items |
| What sets the level rhythm? | Forward flow or completing a course | Scanning spaces, returning to areas and optional completion |
| What role do collectibles play? | They may be optional rewards or resources | Collecting is a major ongoing objective; larger items may gate progress |
These are useful tendencies, not rigid genre rules. Genres overlap, and players and critics may apply labels differently.
#1 Best Overall
- Enjoy two Mario adventures solo or with friends
- In Super Mario 3D World, choose a character each with distinct playstyles as you dash and climb through dozens of colorful courses, collecting Green Stars and power-ups along the way
- Cooperate (and compete) with friends locally or online to reach each stage’s goal. A crown is awarded to the highest-scoring player, making for a friendly frenzy
- In addition to added multiplayer options, the Nintendo Switch version of the Super Mario 3D World game has been improved with faster character speeds and more
- Explore a seamless feline world in Lake Lapcat, complete objectives to collect Cat Shines, and defeat a giant Bowser in the new Bowser’s Fury adventure
When does collecting become the point?
Simply having collectibles does not make a game a collect-a-thon. Collection becomes defining when the game repeatedly directs the player to seek different kinds of items, and those items shape its goals, rewards or progression. Major collectibles may unlock new areas or advance the game; smaller ones may provide resources or count toward a larger reward.
There is no item-count threshold that settles the label. A design essay on collect-a-thons describes the distinction as qualitative: it depends on how collection structures play, not on reaching a particular number of objects. Read the design essay.

- Tough-as-nails precision platforming action. Brutal, but fair levels designed to break you.
- Boss. Fights. Dark World levels so tough, you'll scream in the rain at a bus stop.
- A soundtrack that was once described by a Guitar Center employee as “hey, either buy the guitars or get out. We’re seriously going to call the cops!”
- n-game text languages: English, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish (Spain).
- 3D!
How level design and pace affect the label
Compact, dense environments that reward checking corners and interacting with the surroundings tend to support collect-a-thon play. More linear courses and a strong push toward forward momentum tend to foreground traversal and action. These patterns can help explain a game’s feel, but neither is a universal test.

This is his perspective on level design, not a rule for every game. Read the interview.

Games can mix action and collection
Penny’s Big Breakaway
The developers describe the game’s emphasis as acrobatic movement and forward momentum. Optional Showpieces add a completionist challenge, but the levels remain linear and keep players moving. It illustrates how collectibles can sit inside an action- and traversal-led platformer. Read the developers’ interview.
Speedollama
Its developer describes it as a platformer shooter with a timed collect-a-thon element. Here, the term describes a part of the experience rather than necessarily defining the whole game. Read the developer’s description.

- A brand new 3D Mario game that plays like a 2D game Explore all-new levels and try out new abilities
- New enemies include Goombas with tails, tall stacks of Goombas and a Piranha Plant that spits ink to obscure a player's view
- Like other games for Nintendo 3DS the game can also be played in 2D, but the 3D visuals make it easier for players to judge the depths and distances in their environments. Discover the joy of 3D gaming as you can more accurately judge the jump to the next platform or how far Mario is from a question block! Compatible with 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS, New 3DS XL and New 2DS XL consoles
Banjo-Kazooie
A design essay identifies Banjo-Kazooie as a prominent collect-a-thon example, pointing to its varied items and larger goals. It is a useful reference for collection-led design, rather than a template every collect-a-thon must follow. Read the design essay.

- Identify the repeated skill test. Is the player mainly asked to master movement, clear hazards and fight, or to search for objects?
- Check what organizes progression. Do courses and action challenges drive advancement, or do collected items and their rewards?
- Look at how the game directs attention. Does it push the player onward, or encourage repeated scanning and exploration?
- Describe the mix if needed. A game may be an action platformer with collect-a-thon elements, or a collect-a-thon that also includes combat.
Combat does not rule out a collection focus, and a high number of collectibles does not prove one. The key is whether collection or action and traversal organize the experience overall.
