Fairbuds 2 are IP54 dust- and splash-resistant, not waterproof for showers or swimming. They are designed to tolerate sweat, light rain and ordinary splashes, while deliberate immersion can damage them. Fairphone also designed the earbuds around replaceable components: seven parts are replaceable, including both earbud batteries and the charging-case battery.
You can change those batteries without tools or glue, buy one replacement earbud, or replace the charging-case core. The Fairbuds app works on iPhone and Android for presets, a five-band equalizer and firmware updates. Fairphone describes updates as a way to extend longevity, add features and fix occasional bugs, but has not published a fixed Fairbuds 2 software-support end date.

What does IP54 mean on Fairbuds 2?
IP54 is an ingress-protection rating with two separate parts. The first digit, 5, indicates protection against dust ingress sufficient for normal operation; the earbuds are not certified as completely dust-tight. The second digit, 4, covers splashing water from any direction. Fairphone labels Fairbuds 2 “IP54 dust and splash resistant.”

Fairphone’s support explanation for the Fairbuds line says water splashing against the enclosure from any direction should not have a harmful effect. That wording describes rain resistance, not permission to immerse the earbuds.

Are Fairbuds 2 waterproof?
No. “Waterproof” normally implies protection against immersion, and IP54 does not provide that. Do not swim with Fairbuds 2, submerge them, rinse them under a tap or intentionally expose them to a jet of water.
Can you wear Fairbuds 2 in the rain?
Yes, light rain and ordinary weather exposure are within the practical use implied by IP54. If the earbuds become wet, remove them, wipe away moisture and let them dry before putting them back in the case. Keep the charging contacts and the inside of the case dry; trapped moisture at the contacts can interfere with charging or cause corrosion.
Can you wear Fairbuds 2 in the shower?
No. Fairphone describes the rating as sweat and weather resistance, not complete waterproofing. A shower combines sustained water exposure, spray pressure and warm condensation, all of which exceed the protection you should assume from IP54. Swimming is also outside the rating.
What to do after Fairbuds 2 get wet
- Remove both earbuds from your ears and disconnect them from your phone if convenient.
- Wipe the outer surfaces with a soft, dry cloth. Do not insert a sharp object into the microphones, vents or charging contacts.
- Leave the earbuds out of the charging case until they are fully dry. Putting wet earbuds into the case can transfer moisture to the case contacts and battery area.
- Wipe the case separately and keep its lid open while it dries.
- Do not use a hair dryer, radiator or other concentrated heat source. Heat can damage seals, batteries and adhesives elsewhere in the assembly.
- After drying, check that the contacts are clean and that both earbuds charge normally before relying on them for a call or trip.
IP54 is a protection rating for the enclosure under specified test conditions, not a guarantee against every liquid incident. Saltwater, chlorinated water, soap and sweat residue can be more aggressive than clean rain, so wipe the earbuds after heavy sweating even when they continue to operate normally.

Which Fairbuds 2 parts can you replace?
Fairphone says Fairbuds 2 have seven replaceable spare parts. The published information specifically identifies the left and right earbud batteries, the charging-case battery, individual replacement earbuds and the charging-case core among the serviceable options. The design goal is to repair the part that has failed instead of discarding the complete set.

How to choose the right replacement
Replace a battery when capacity has declined
If an earbud runs down much faster than the other while both are used at similar volume, the earbud battery is the logical first suspect. If both earbuds work but the case needs charging unusually often, choose the case-battery replacement. Replacing the battery preserves the earbuds, fit and pairing history instead of forcing a complete replacement.

Replace one earbud when only one side is missing or defective
A single-earbud option is useful after loss or a one-sided hardware failure. Confirm whether you need the left or right unit and check that the seller identifies Fairbuds 2, not the earlier Fairbuds generation. After installation, follow the normal pairing or reset procedure shown in the current Fairbuds app if the replacement does not immediately join the existing pair.
Replace the case core when the case is the failed component
If neither earbud charges reliably despite clean contacts and known-good batteries, the case may be the problem. A charging-case core is a more targeted repair than buying another complete set. Check the condition of the case shell, hinge and contacts as well, because a replacement core will not repair physically damaged external parts unless those parts are included in the exact service component.
Are Fairbuds 2 battery replacements difficult?
Fairphone says the earbud and charging-case battery replacements are designed to be tool-free and glue-free. That reduces the barriers that commonly make small wireless earbuds disposable. Work on a clean, dry surface, keep track of the left and right earbuds, and follow the current Fairphone replacement instructions for the exact part. Do not improvise with metal tools, excess force or third-party adhesive: puncturing a lithium battery can create a fire risk, and glue can prevent later servicing.

A battery swap does not make an old battery safe to throw in household waste. Recycle the removed battery through an appropriate battery-collection service available in your region. If a battery is swollen, hot, leaking or visibly damaged, stop using the earbud and seek qualified recycling or service guidance rather than attempting the replacement yourself.

Do Fairbuds 2 work with iPhone and Android?
Yes. Fairbuds 2 use standard Bluetooth and are intended to connect to both iOS and Android phones. You do not need a Fairphone handset. Basic Bluetooth audio and call functions come from the phone’s Bluetooth connection; the companion app adds configuration and maintenance features.
What the Fairbuds app provides

- Firmware updates for the earbuds and related hardware.
The full feature set requires the Fairbuds app. If you only need ordinary Bluetooth playback, you can pair the earbuds through your phone’s Bluetooth settings, but you will miss app-based controls and update delivery.
General connection steps
- Charge the earbuds and case, then open Bluetooth settings on the iPhone or Android phone.
- Open the case and put the earbuds into pairing mode according to Fairphone’s current instructions.
- Select Fairbuds 2 in the phone’s available-device list.
- Install the Fairbuds app from the appropriate iOS or Android app store if you want presets, equalizer controls or firmware updates.
- Keep the phone near the earbuds and follow the app’s on-screen instructions when an update is offered.
Menu names can vary slightly by operating-system version. If the app cannot see the earbuds even though Bluetooth audio works, grant the app the Bluetooth or nearby-device permission requested by your operating system, then close and reopen the app.

Fairphone’s app FAQ says updates are intended to ensure device longevity, introduce new features and provide occasional bug fixes. That establishes the purpose of the update mechanism, not a calendar commitment. The practical expectation is that update availability may change over the product’s life, so install offered firmware updates while they remain available and keep the Fairbuds app current.
What an update can and cannot do
- It can add or adjust features, improve behavior and correct some software defects.
- It cannot restore a worn-out battery or repair liquid or physical damage.
- It may require sufficient charge and a stable Bluetooth connection during installation.
- It does not turn an IP54 device into an immersion-rated product.
Warranty detail for European buyers
Fairphone’s Fairbuds 2 product information says European buyers can receive a third warranty year by registering within 90 days. This is regional and registration-dependent, so it should not be presented as a universal warranty term. Check the conditions that apply to your country, purchase channel and registration date.
Warranty coverage and replaceable-part availability are separate questions. A replaceable battery does not automatically mean every failure is covered for free, and a warranty claim may have different requirements from a self-purchased spare part.
