No—not reliably. A factory reset erases data stored on the phone, but it does not necessarily remove the organization’s server-side enrollment. If the device is still assigned through Samsung Knox Mobile Enrollment (KME) or Android zero-touch, it can enroll again during setup. The organization’s administrator must release it from the relevant service.
Why a managed phone can still be managed after a reset
A reset wipes local user data; it is not the same as removing a device from an organization’s enrollment system. During setup, an internet-connected phone may check whether it has an organizational assignment and apply the configured management profile. Google says a registered zero-touch device cannot be removed from management by factory reset; the IT administrator must unregister it (Google’s zero-touch enrollment guidance for users).

Samsung likewise explains that a device enrolled through Knox Mobile Enrollment can re-enroll after a reset, including by reinstalling Knox Manage when configured to do so (Samsung Knox: Use Samsung Knox Mobile Enrollment). A reset can therefore be part of the enrollment process rather than a way to cancel it.

Identify which screen or lock you have
“Knox lock” and “MDM lock” are often used loosely, but the recovery route depends on what the phone is asking for. Read the setup message rather than assuming every post-reset block is the same issue.

| What you see | What it usually means | Who can resolve it |
|---|---|---|
| A notice that the phone belongs to an organization, is managed, or must be enrolled | An enrollment assignment, such as Samsung KME or Android zero-touch, is being applied during setup. | The organization’s KME, zero-touch, or enterprise mobility management (EMM) administrator. |
| A request to verify a Google account previously used on the phone | Factory Reset Protection (FRP), an account-verification safeguard, is blocking activation. | The holder of the previously associated account, or the organization administrator if enterprise FRP policy applies. |
| A device lock or PIN prompt associated with Knox administration | A lock action configured by a KME administrator may be in effect. | The responsible KME administrator, using the authorized unlock procedure. |
MDM (mobile device management) and EMM (enterprise mobility management) refer to systems that apply work policies, apps, restrictions, and sometimes remote lock actions. Knox Manage is one such management service. The device’s local data and its server-side assignment are separate things: clearing the former does not necessarily release the latter.
How to get the phone released legitimately
- Identify the prompt. Determine whether setup says the device is organization-managed, asks for a previously used Google account, or displays a Knox-administered lock. Those are different recovery paths.
- For organization enrollment, contact the organization or prior owner. Ask the administrator to remove the device from the applicable service: unassign its KME profile or remove it from KME, unenroll it from its EMM, or deregister it from Android zero-touch. Provide the IMEI, serial number, or other identifier requested or shown during setup. Samsung documents these as administrator actions (Samsung Knox: Unenroll and delete devices); Google’s zero-touch guidance likewise directs users to the IT administrator for deregistration (Google Android Enterprise Help).
- For FRP, use the previously associated account. If the device was organization-owned and the organization configured enterprise FRP, contact its administrator. Google documents FRP as a separate policy-controlled feature (Google Android Enterprise Help: General FAQs; Enable enterprise factory reset protection).
- For a Knox-administered lock, ask the KME administrator to unlock it. Samsung documents an administrator-generated one-time PIN for supported locks configured through advanced profile settings (Configure advanced settings; Manage devices with advanced profile settings).
If you are buying a used phone, ask the seller to complete the release and reset while you are present, before paying. A successful reset alone does not establish that the organization has removed its enrollment assignment.

What changed for FRP on Android 15 and later
FRP is not the same as KME or MDM enrollment. Samsung’s Knox Mobile Enrollment 25.11 release notes, dated November 19, 2025, state: “To align with Google’s updated policies, Knox Mobile Enrollment doesn’t support bypass of Factory Reset Protection (FRP) on devices running Android 15 or later.” That limitation concerns FRP bypass; it does not mean an enrollment assignment has been removed.
Why repeated resets are unlikely to help
When a cloud enrollment assignment remains in place, repeating the reset does not deregister the phone. Enrollment behavior can vary with the enrollment path, Android version, ownership mode, management configuration, and whether the device can reach enrollment servers during setup. Google says zero-touch provisioning requires internet access, so an offline setup may behave differently until the device connects; being able to proceed temporarily is not proof that the assignment has been released.

Do not rely on consumer reset utilities or repeated wipes to remove a cloud assignment or account-bound FRP. The documented routes are administrator release for organizational enrollment, authorized administrator unlock for a Knox-administered lock, or legitimate recovery of the previously associated account for FRP.
