That approach prevents one player from becoming the only logistics manager while everyone else waits for materials. Space Age is the paid expansion released on October 21, 2024, alongside the free Factorio 2.0 update. It adds four planets, space platforms, quality tiers, and elevated rails, so a multiplayer factory eventually becomes a network of production sites rather than one continuous bus.

What Space Age multiplayer is—and what it is not
Choose Freeplay (Space Age) when creating the save. It is the normal Space Age campaign mode and supports multiplayer. The expansion changes the progression after your Nauvis factory is established: you unlock planets with different resources and environmental constraints, then use space platforms to move cargo between planetary orbits.
Co-op is most effective when players deliberately divide work. The official multiplayer description emphasizes joining forces, building large factories, collaborating, and delegating tasks. In practice, that means a player can own power and smelting while another owns trains and circuit signals, instead of four people independently redesigning the same furnace block.

Hold a five-minute “session zero” before placing major production
Pause at the start and agree on rules that are cheap to change now and expensive to change later. Write the decisions in a pinned in-game message, a shared note, or a sign beside the main bus.
- Storage: decide whether shared materials go into labeled chests, logistics-provider chests, or a dedicated mall. Keep personal construction supplies separate from communal stock.
- Blueprints: use a short naming format such as
Nauvis-smelting-v1,rail-main-east, orFulgora-recycler-02. Include the planet and a revision number. - Ownership: name one accountable player for power, perimeter defenses, science, mall production, trains, and each off-world base. Ownership means maintenance, not exclusive control.
- Requests: maintain one visible “needs” list. A remote builder should not have to guess whether the home base needs science packs, rocket parts, fuel, or construction robots.
- Change control: decide who may alter train schedules, platform interrupts, and circuit conditions. Anyone can propose a change; the owner confirms it after checking the downstream effects.
These rules are coordination tools, not restrictions. They let a player join late, understand the factory, and contribute without asking for a private tour of every chest.
Use explicit roles, but keep the work interchangeable
Assign a primary owner and a backup for each area. Rotate roles when someone wants to learn; do not make progress depend on one person being online.
| Role | Primary responsibilities | Useful hand-off information |
|---|---|---|
| Home-base engineer | Nauvis power, mining, smelting, mall production, and early science | Power surplus, fuel type, raw-material buffers, and the next planned expansion |
| Logistics engineer | Belts, trains, robots, circuit signals, station standards, and later platform schedules | Station names, train limits, request signals, and current bottlenecks |
| Defense and exploration player | Perimeter, biter response, resource scouting, and landing-site preparation | Threat locations, cleared routes, turret ammunition, and safe construction zones |
| Planet owner | One specialist base on an off-world planet, including its inputs, exports, storage, and repairs | Export list, import list, spoilage or fuel rules, and what happens when storage fills |
Keep critical knowledge in the factory itself. Label train stops, power switches, platform names, and buffer chests so the backup can recover the system without waiting for the owner.
Build Nauvis in a sequence that supports four players
Nauvis is the organizing hub. Do not rush a platform launch while the home base has fragile power, no spare construction materials, or an improvised science line that only one player understands.
- Secure a compact starting area. Place the first power and smelting blocks close enough for short belts, but leave corridors for a main bus, rail approach, and future roboports. Keep the perimeter simple until resource demand justifies expansion.
- Separate shared production from personal tools. The mall should supply belts, inserters, assemblers, poles, rails, defenses, and construction materials. Put its outputs in clearly labeled storage so everyone can restock without interrupting science.
- Stabilize power before adding throughput. Display generation, consumption, and accumulator charge where every player can see them. A new mining outpost or robot network should be approved only when the surplus can absorb it.
- Create a basic science lane. Give one player responsibility for science progression while another keeps the mall and raw-material supply ahead of it. Record which technology unlocks the next shared objective.
- Reserve construction space. Mark a launch area, rail yard, storage yard, and repair corridor even if they are empty. Rebuilding the entire center of Nauvis to fit a rocket or platform later is a common multiplayer time sink.
- Document the first export candidate. When the group is ready to leave, identify the products that must travel between planets and the products that should be made locally. This prevents a platform from becoming an expensive general-purpose warehouse.
Adopt conventions that make the factory readable
Storage and buffers
Use one naming and color convention for raw materials, intermediates, science, construction parts, fuel, and returns. A buffer has a purpose: launch fuel, platform cargo, emergency defense supplies, or a planet’s export. If a chest has no owner or destination, it becomes invisible inventory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet a maximum buffer size for scarce items and a minimum reserve for safety-critical items. For example, a defense reserve should not be consumed automatically by a science request. Mark any chest that is intentionally quarantined from logistics bots.

Blueprints and revisions
Save a blueprint only after it has run long enough to expose power, input, and output problems. Include orientation, train-stop names, expected belt direction, and any circuit assumptions in the blueprint description. Retire old versions rather than leaving several nearly identical designs in the shared library.
Train and station names
Choose a stable pattern such as Nauvis-Iron-Mine-01, Nauvis-Iron-Smelter-01, and Vulcanus-Export-Heavy-01. Put the planet first so the list remains scannable as new surfaces appear. Never reuse a station name for a different material or destination.
Coordinate science, mall production, and exploration
Science unlocks the tools that let every other role work faster, but science alone does not build a factory. Keep a short priority queue with three categories:
- Capability: technologies that unlock the next planet, platform function, rail layer, or defensive tool.
- Throughput: technologies that remove a current bottleneck in power, mining, smelting, chemistry, or transport.
- Quality-of-life: robots, modules, inventory improvements, and construction conveniences that reduce coordination overhead.
The science owner announces the next capability and its material requirements. The mall owner then checks whether those parts are already automated; if not, that production becomes a visible task rather than an emergency request. The exploration player should scout resources and safe construction sites while the other roles prepare the required infrastructure.
Do not let a single player hand-craft every rocket or platform component. Put recurring parts on the mall or a dedicated production line, and leave a labeled reserve for repairs and expansion.
Prepare the first space platform as a shared logistics project
Space platforms are the bridge between planetary factories. They carry cargo between planetary orbits, so a platform is not merely a vehicle owned by the person who launched it; it is shared infrastructure with a schedule, storage limits, fuel needs, and return obligations.
- Define the first route. Name the origin, destination, and purpose: science delivery, construction parts, intermediates, fuel, or a return load. Avoid an undefined “move everything” mission.
- Set cargo priority. Put mission-critical items ahead of nice-to-have items. If science is the current objective, reserve capacity for science inputs before decorative or speculative cargo.
- Reserve return space. Keep a minimum portion of platform storage empty for products coming back. Without this rule, a platform can arrive full and be unable to load the material the home base actually needs.
- Assign schedule authority. Decide who may edit destinations, waits, and interrupts. Post the current schedule near the launch controls and record why each condition exists.
- Define full and stalled states. Decide whether the platform waits, returns, or diverts when the destination is full, fuel is low, or the receiving factory is not consuming cargo.
- Expose shortages. Use a shared dashboard, signs, or circuit signals to show low fuel, low storage, missing exports, and blocked unloading. A platform problem should be visible from the planet-side factory.
| Decision | Team rule to write down | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cargo priority | Which items load first when storage is limited | Prevents low-value cargo from displacing science or emergency supplies |
| Return reserve | Percentage or slot count held for outbound products | Keeps the platform from becoming one-way storage |
| Schedule edits | Named owner plus a backup | Avoids conflicting interrupts and unexplained route changes |
| Destination full | Wait, return, or divert condition | Stops a platform from silently blocking a launch queue |
| Shortage signal | Where a player sees fuel, cargo, and receiving-capacity alerts | Lets the team fix the cause before production stops |
Treat every planet as a specialist supplier
When a new planet opens, resist copying the entire Nauvis base. Build only the power, input handling, processing, storage, and defense needed for that planet’s role. Keep an export list and an import list beside the landing area, and appoint one owner to maintain them.

Fulgora: design for islands, oceans, and recycling
Fulgora’s island-and-ocean geography makes routing, landfill, and recycling logistics central. Survey connected buildable areas before committing to a large block. Plan how items cross water, where landfill is reserved, and how recycled outputs are buffered so a temporary shortage does not halt every downstream machine.
Give the Fulgora owner authority over local routing, but standardize the names of imports, exports, and platform storage with Nauvis. If an island’s output is intermittent, export in controlled batches rather than creating a platform interrupt for every small fluctuation.
Vulcanus: concentrate heavy industry
Vulcanus is defined by lava and heavy industrial processing. Compact, high-throughput designs reduce the distance between demanding process steps and make heat, power, and material flow easier to inspect. Leave maintenance access around dense blocks; a design that is efficient only when nobody needs to repair it is not a good multiplayer design.
Document which products are made locally and which are imported. The platform schedule should carry stable intermediates instead of forcing Vulcanus to reproduce every Nauvis component.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Gleba: schedule around biology and spoilage
Gleba’s biological inputs and spoilage make timing, buffering, and waste handling central. A large chest of perishable material is not automatically a safety reserve. Keep production close to consumption where possible, size buffers deliberately, and give waste or by-products a defined destination.
Use dashboard signals for fresh input, usable output, and blocked waste. If the receiving planet cannot consume an export quickly, pause or reduce production rather than filling every platform and storage slot with material that will degrade.
Aquilo: protect heat and power margins
Aquilo’s severe cold makes heat management, insulated layout discipline, and reliable power essential. Build generous access around heat-producing infrastructure and place monitoring where the owner can see failures without crossing the entire base. Protect the power margin before adding optional modules or a large robot network.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Introduce quality only after ordinary production is stable
Quality adds higher tiers for items, structures, and equipment. Those tiers can improve a mature factory, but they also multiply recipes, sorting decisions, storage categories, and logistics requests. Start with ordinary production until the team can answer three questions without searching: what is the current bottleneck, where is its input buffer, and who repairs it?
When you adopt quality, choose a narrow target such as a frequently used machine or an item whose improved tier removes a known bottleneck. Keep quality outputs in explicitly labeled storage, and decide whether lower-tier items remain valid for normal requests. Do not mix tiers in an unlabeled chest; the resulting “full” signal may hide that the wrong quality level is available.
Use elevated rails where they solve a real routing problem
Elevated rails add ramps, supports, and a second track layer. They can cross difficult terrain and improve crowded intersections, but they also add another planning dimension. Build them after conventional rail, power, and station naming are reliable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose elevated rail for a specific crossing, approach, or congested junction. Keep ordinary ground-level routes where they are clear and maintainable. Mark supports and ramps in blueprints, document the intended travel direction, and test a short route with one train before replacing a whole network.
A good multiplayer rule is “elevate the exception, not the entire map.” This gives the logistics owner a powerful tool without requiring every player to understand a new rail layer during the early campaign.
Run the factory with a shared operating rhythm
At the start of each session, spend one minute on three questions: what is blocked, what is the next shared milestone, and who owns the next intervention? At the end, record unfinished work and any changed schedule or circuit condition.
Best Value
- Blocked: identify the first machine, belt, train stop, platform, or power switch where flow stops.
- Milestone: choose one outcome, such as a stable science rate, a ready launch area, a functioning export route, or a defended landing site.
- Owner: assign a player and a backup, plus the material or access they need.
Use signs or a dashboard for quantities that change while nobody is watching: fuel reserve, platform cargo, destination capacity, science buffer, and critical defense supplies. A visible number is more useful than a chat message that disappears.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

One player is doing everything
Stop adding new production and list the areas that only that player understands. Have them label stations, explain the next decision, and assign a backup. Transfer one subsystem at a time—such as mall, power, or trains—rather than abandoning it wholesale.
The base has materials, but nobody can find them
Separate personal storage from shared buffers, apply the naming convention, and remove obsolete chests from active logistics requests. Add a sign showing the intended consumer and replenishment method for every large buffer.
A platform repeatedly arrives full or empty
Inspect cargo priority, the reserved return space, destination capacity, and the condition that releases the platform. Check whether unloading is blocked on the planet side. Correct one condition, observe a complete trip, then document the change.
A new planet consumes all attention
Reduce its scope to one export and one import until the route is reliable. Keep Nauvis science, power, and defense on a maintenance schedule, and assign a backup to the planet owner before expanding its product list.
Quality creates sorting chaos
Pause quality expansion, isolate tiers in labeled storage, and restore a predictable ordinary-production flow. Resume with one targeted item after the team agrees how requests, buffers, and lower-tier substitutes work.
Rail expansion becomes a design debate
Prototype the smallest route that solves the actual crossing or intersection. Compare its maintenance access, train behavior, and power requirements with a conventional route, then publish the chosen blueprint and retire the rejected versions.
Milestones for a first successful campaign
- Foundation: Freeplay (Space Age) save created, roles assigned, storage and blueprint rules posted.
- Resilient Nauvis: mall, science, power, and perimeter have owners and backups; construction space for the launch area is reserved.
- First platform: route, cargo priority, return reserve, schedule authority, and full-or-stalled behavior are documented.
- Specialist planet: one planet has a named owner, a narrow export, a defined import list, local emergency supplies, and a tested delivery route.
- Network growth: each additional planet is added as a supplier with explicit contracts rather than as an unplanned duplicate of Nauvis.
- Advanced systems: quality and elevated rails are introduced only where the team can maintain their extra sorting or routing complexity.
The practical multiplayer formula
A strong Space Age co-op factory is a federation of understandable systems. Nauvis supplies continuity, each planet specializes, platforms move agreed cargo, and roles make maintenance accountable without making knowledge private. Begin with ordinary production, stable power, and clear labels; add quality and elevated rails when a measured bottleneck justifies them. If every player can see what is needed, who owns it, and how the next delivery is supposed to work, the group can scale from a starter base to an interplanetary factory without one person becoming the permanent bottleneck.
