It works when building-management systems (BMS), sensors and operational processes connect: teams can see energy use, faults, indoor conditions and space use, then know who should respond.
What real-time visibility means for facility management
Visibility is a management capability made up of four parts: relevant data, systems that can exchange it, reporting people can interpret, and a process for investigating what it reveals. A dashboard can make a problem easier to see, but it cannot fix incompatible systems, unreliable measurements or unassigned maintenance work.

Facility technology spans more than sensors and analytics software. ISO/TR 41016:2024, published on April 8, 2024, provides an overview of available facility-management technologies and a framework for understanding and integrating digital practice in the built environment. It is a technology overview, not a guarantee that any particular product or implementation will deliver a specific result. ISO/TR 41016:2024
What connected building data can reveal
Energy, carbon and equipment faults
A Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) case describes a building-management-system analytics platform that recorded building performance for three months before strategies were developed. It then supported live reporting on energy use and carbon emissions, along with real-time detection of faults or anomalies. The example illustrates how a baseline and ongoing monitoring can help teams connect building performance to action; it is an implementation case, not a controlled comparison of products. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use of space and operational decisions
The same RICS example describes using timely data to understand how space is used. When occupancy or space-use information is combined with building operations data, managers can investigate whether operating schedules and services align with actual use. The data should inform a decision; it does not by itself establish what occupants need or whether a change will improve their experience.
Energy savings are specific to the site
An ITU-T case study of the Hyperdome reports first-year energy cost savings of $337,516, equal to 12.6% of that site’s energy costs, alongside 1,220,884 kWh saved and a 7.7% reduction in peak demand. These are reported results from one project, not a forecast for other facilities. Results elsewhere may differ with building systems, baseline operation, weather, occupancy, data quality and implementation. ITU-T case studies on city science application framework

Why energy dashboards need an indoor-environment view
Energy is measurable and often prominent in performance reporting, but it is not the only measure of a building’s performance. A 2015 NIST review of high-performing-building case studies found that nearly all addressed energy, while indoor air quality was generally not reported comprehensively. The finding applies to the case studies NIST reviewed; it is not a census of all buildings today. NIST: Indoor Air Quality in High-Performing Building Case Studies: Got Data?
NIST recommends documenting design and commissioning details, measured pollutant concentrations and ventilation rates, and occupant satisfaction through surveys. This combination matters because sensor measurements describe selected conditions, while occupant feedback can reveal experiences that a limited set of readings may miss.

Which indoor air-quality parameters should facilities monitor?
Choose parameters according to the building’s needs, uses and monitoring goals rather than assuming one sensor captures indoor air quality as a whole. A practical set may include carbon dioxide (CO₂), particulate matter such as PM2.5, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), temperature and relative humidity. Honeywell says its TR50 series measures up to those five parameters and can feed near-real-time dashboards. That is manufacturer product information, not independent evidence of health or energy outcomes; confirm current model specifications and compatibility with the existing BMS before selection. - Start with management questions. Specify what decisions the team needs to make, such as finding abnormal energy use, prioritizing faults, reviewing ventilation performance or understanding space use.
- Inventory existing data. Record which BMS points, meters, sensors and maintenance or portfolio systems are available, what each measures, and how frequently readings arrive. Note missing signals and known data-quality issues.
- Decide what must connect. Map the data needed for each management question and check whether the relevant systems can share it. Confirm integration requirements before choosing a platform or sensor; a consumer air monitor should not be assumed to be a drop-in BMS sensor.
- Standardize asset and point names. Use consistent identifiers for equipment, locations and measured points so that trends and alerts can be interpreted across systems and, where relevant, across sites.
- Present trends and actionable alerts. Show context that helps staff distinguish a meaningful change from routine variation. Define what should trigger investigation and provide enough information to locate the affected asset.
- Assign investigation and follow-up. Name the role responsible for checking an alert, recording what was found, and tracking corrective work. Review whether the response resolved the problem and whether the data or alert threshold needs adjustment.
- Review coverage and outcomes. Check whether reporting includes the signals the original questions require, whether measurements are dependable, and whether results are assessed against a consistent baseline.
How to assess a facility-visibility approach
When comparing platforms, sensors or implementation proposals, assess them against the same operational questions instead of treating dashboard features as proof of value.

What real-time visibility can—and cannot—do
Timely, integrated data can help facility teams identify anomalies, understand building performance and focus investigations. Its value depends on suitable measurements, systems that can share information, reporting tied to real management questions, and people responsible for follow-through. Neither a dashboard nor a sensor alone establishes savings, better air quality or improved occupant experience.
