GitHub Copilot can turn a Slack discussion into a cloud-agent task that investigates a codebase, proposes a plan, changes code, or creates an issue or pull request. To keep the result useful and safe, name the repository and branch, define the outcome and boundaries, and limit the conversation to context you intend Copilot to use. GitHub labels the Slack integration a public preview; availability and controls may change.
What Copilot does with a Slack request
The GitHub app in Slack is an entry point to Copilot cloud agent. After you ask it to work, the agent can investigate, plan, write code, and create repository artifacts such as issues and pull requests. Work runs asynchronously in a cloud sandbox, and a Slack Code channel is created for collaboration on the session. Once that channel exists, GitHub says to steer the session there.

When the task finishes, the agent returns a summary and links to its artifacts. Treat those as proposed work: review the changes and discussion in GitHub, a terminal, or an editor before relying on or merging them.
What belongs in a safe task request
GitHub does not prescribe a formal task-contract template. The following details make the request more actionable and reduce ambiguity:
#1 Best Overall
- Omnidirectional Microphone - It is not a Speaker or Speakerphone, it is a condenser microphone. The microphone has an omnidirectional pickup pattern with a pickup distance of 11.5 ft, making it easy to capture the most subtle sounds from 360° directions and transmit the sound more loud and clear. Participants can hear each other without raising their voices.
- Made for Conferences - This microphone is perfect for small or medium meetings over an internet network by using Skype/GoToMeeting/WebEx/Hangouts/Fuze/VoIP/Zoom and other softwares. You can also use it for court reports, seminars, remote training, business negotiations, video chats, etc.
- Plug & Play, No Drivers Required - The microphone is compatible with all operating systems - both Windows and macOS. You just need to plug the microphone to start recording. If there is no response after inserting the mic, please go to the microphone setting of your computer and select the mic as the INPUT device.
- Convenient Mute Button - Quickly mute/unmute your microphone. The built-in blue indicator light for checking whether the USB microphone is working.
- Well Designed Cable - The microphone is constructed of sturdy and metal material and the base is fitted with an anti-slip mat which keeps it stable on desktop during use. It is small, convenient and does not require much space when in use. Connected with a 1.8m nylon shielded wire, it effectively eliminates signal interferences to achieve the best recording results.
- Repository: Name the repository explicitly.
- Branch: Specify the target branch when it matters. If you omit the repository or branch, the channel’s default repository and its default branch are used, where configured.
- Outcome: Describe the behavior to investigate or change, rather than merely saying to “fix” something.
- Boundaries: State what should remain untouched, relevant constraints, and acceptance criteria.
- Artifact: Say whether you want an investigation, a plan, an issue, or a code change and pull request.
- Uncertainty: For an unclear or consequential task, ask for a plan before implementation, and ask the agent to report assumptions.
For example, a request might say: “In repository team/service, work from branch release. Investigate why [specific behavior] occurs, without changing the public API. First return a plan and assumptions. If the plan meets these acceptance criteria, implement it and open a pull request.” Replace the bracketed description with the actual behavior; the example is a suggested format, not a GitHub-enforced command.
How Slack context affects the work
GitHub’s official documentation states: “The entire thread becomes the decision-making context for the artifact.” That means the surrounding conversation can inform the work, not just the sentence that mentions the GitHub app. Anyone contributing to the original conversation may affect the context the agent uses, and thread content is stored in generated artifacts.

Keep the source conversation focused. If it contains unrelated discussion or sensitive details, use a direct message or start a focused thread instead of asking from a broad conversation. After the Slack Code channel has been created, continue steering the session there.
Direct message or shared conversation?
The interaction mode changes whose GitHub identity is used and how the task is initiated. A direct message can also help contain the source context; a shared channel lets teammates contribute information.

| Consideration | Direct message | Shared channel or group thread |
|---|---|---|
| Identity used for actions | The linked user’s GitHub identity and permissions. | Artifacts such as pull requests are created under the GitHub app identity. |
| Who can initiate code changes | The linked user must have write access to the target repository. | The person triggering code changes needs write access; other participants can contribute context but do not gain that authority. |
| Conversation context | The direct-message conversation informs the task. A default repository cannot be set in a direct message. | The conversation thread informs the task; a channel can have a shared default repository. |
| Pull-request attribution and review | Actions use the linked user’s identity. | App-authored pull requests may require an additional approval under the ruleset condition described below. |
If a repository ruleset already requires at least one approval, GitHub says a pull request created in a shared context requires one additional approval because the app-authored pull request is not attributed to a person. Keep the repository’s normal review process in place and account for that extra approval when planning a shared-channel workflow.
Setup requirements and access to check
The documented workflow requires a GitHub account with a paid Copilot plan, a Slack account and workspace, the GitHub integration installed in that workspace, and enabled cloud sandboxes. The Slack workspace admin installs the integration; the user connects a GitHub account through the app and may be prompted to choose a default repository. Organization or enterprise administrators may need to enable Copilot cloud agent and cloud sandbox policies. For enterprise repositories, administrators also configure which repositories the Slack app can access.

The person who starts code changes needs write access to the target repository. Guests and outside collaborators cannot start or steer a Slack session. Before enabling the integration, review the current authorization screen and your organization’s policy. GitHub’s permissions reference describes access including:
- Slack access to private conversations with the app, GitHub link previews, slash commands, workspace identity details, and posting as the app.
- GitHub code read access, plus read access to actions, commit statuses, checks, discussions, issues, metadata, pull requests, and repository projects.
- Write access to actions, issues, deployments, and pull requests; content write access for Copilot-authored pull requests; and workflow read/write access to initiate sessions.
These scopes describe the integration’s documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every task uses every permission. Check which repositories are enabled for the app and whether the requested access fits your team’s policy.

Slack task or CLI delegation?
GitHub documents both Slack and CLI routes to cloud-agent work, but they start from different contexts and produce different documented outputs.
| Route | Starting context | Documented workflow and artifact |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub app in Slack | A Slack conversation or direct message. | Uses conversation context; the agent can investigate, plan, write code, and create issues or pull requests. A Slack Code channel supports ongoing collaboration. |
GitHub CLI /delegate |
A task delegated through the CLI. | Sends work to the cloud agent, which creates a branch and draft pull request and continues asynchronously. |
These are distinct documented routes; the documentation does not establish that their settings or behavior are identical. Choose Slack when discussion context is useful, and use the CLI route when you want to delegate through the command-line workflow.
Practical checks before and after starting
- Confirm the repository, target branch, and repository access before submitting the task.
- Use a focused thread or direct message if the surrounding discussion should not inform the work.
- Make the desired result, constraints, and acceptance criteria explicit; request a plan first if the scope is uncertain.
- Check the acting identity: linked user in a direct message, GitHub app identity in a shared context.
- Review the summary and linked artifacts. For shared-context pull requests, check whether the repository’s ruleset makes an extra approval necessary.
- Verify the current preview status, plan eligibility, permissions, and administrator policies in GitHub’s documentation before rollout.
GitHub documented this Slack capability as a public preview and made it available to paid Copilot plans in documentation checked on October 7, 2026. Preview status, eligibility, permissions, sandbox policies, and feature behavior can change; consult the current official documentation before setting up a team workflow.
