Instagram Reels is more closely tied to creator profiles, follower relationships and discovery through Explore. Which fits better depends on who you want to reach and how you want to share—not on a guaranteed difference in views.
How publishing differs
Facebook: video publishing is moving into Reels
Meta announced in June 2025 that all new videos on Facebook would be shared as Reels, including longer videos, with no length or format restrictions in the unified publishing flow. The change was described as a gradual rollout, so the exact publishing options may still depend on what your account and app currently show. Meta said audience controls would remain available. Meta’s announcement explains the transition.

Instagram: Reels within a profile and follower workflow
Instagram’s documented Reels flow allows sharing with followers and, for public accounts, potential discovery in Explore. Creators can choose whether a Reel also appears in the Feed. These details come from Instagram’s 2020 launch description, not a complete guide to the current interface, so check the options shown when publishing. Meta’s original Instagram Reels description outlines those mechanics.

Audience and privacy
Facebook audience controls
Meta said Facebook users would retain audience settings such as sharing with friends, selected groups or the public, and that Feed and Reels audience defaults would be unified. Check the audience selector in the current composer before publishing, especially if you intend a video for a limited audience; rollout and interface details can vary.

Instagram account privacy
In Instagram’s launch description, Reels from private accounts followed the account’s privacy settings and were visible to followers, while public Reels could be discovered in Explore. Because that description dates to 2020, treat it as a baseline description rather than a guarantee of every current setting. Verify your account privacy and Reel audience in the app.
Discovery and recommendations
Facebook’s documented discovery tools
Meta’s October 2025 Facebook update described controls and features including “Not Interested” feedback, saves as a recommendation signal, friend activity bubbles and suggested search on select Reels. It also said the recommendation system was surfacing 50% more Reels published that day. That is a Meta-reported Facebook figure, not an independent comparison with Instagram and not a forecast of what any individual creator will receive. Meta’s Facebook Reels update describes the features.

Instagram discovery through Explore and friends
Instagram’s original Reels description highlighted a personalized vertical feed in Explore where people could discover public Reels. A later update introduced a Friends tab showing public content friends had engaged with. Meta’s cited announcements describe these features, but do not provide a complete current ranking formula. Meta’s Instagram feature update covers the Friends tab.

How people interact with Reels
Facebook: friend activity and conversation
Facebook’s Reels and Feed friend bubbles can show which Reels friends have liked and provide a way to open a private chat. This puts friend activity and conversation close to the viewing experience.
Instagram: reposts and a Friends tab
Instagram’s August 2025 update described reposts of public Reels and posts that credit the original creator, along with a Friends tab for public content friends have engaged with. Meta also described controls to hide your own likes and comments from that tab and mute activity bubbles. Availability and exact controls may depend on the current app rollout.

Cross-platform translation tools
Meta announced AI translation and dubbing for Reels across Facebook and Instagram, with optional lip syncing. Its October 2025 announcement specified Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers and public Instagram accounts in places where Meta AI was available. Meta later reported in June 2026 that more than half a billion Facebook users watched AI-translated videos weekly; that is a company-reported Facebook figure, not evidence that translated Reels will perform similarly on Instagram or for a particular creator. Check current eligibility in your account because languages, countries and rollout conditions can change. Meta’s translation announcement and its June 2026 update describe the tools and expansion.

- Choose Facebook Reels when your intended audience is on Facebook, you want to use its audience controls, or friend activity and private conversation are part of how you expect viewers to engage.
- Choose Instagram Reels when your audience follows your Instagram profile, you want the profile-and-follower workflow, or public discovery through Explore and Instagram’s social features fit your goals.
- Consider both if your audience is active on both platforms and you can manage each platform’s audience settings and publishing workflow.
Meta reported that, on Facebook in 2025, Reels over one minute made up a quarter of Reels produced by creators with more than 10,000 followers and accounted for over 50% of watch time. Those figures are specific to Facebook and to the stated creator group; they do not establish that longer Reels outperform shorter ones for every creator or that Facebook outperforms Instagram. Meta’s 2025 Facebook update provides the figures.
