Playground Games’ upcoming Fable reboot combines melee, ranged weapons, and magic, with combat intensity intended to suit either a more relaxed or more challenging playthrough. Its central idea is “style-weaving”: adapt to the enemies in front of you, use attacks or abilities to create openings, and change tools when the situation calls for it. There is no confirmed best weapon or fully explained difficulty setting yet.
How combat works in the Fable reboot
This is a new beginning for the series, not a continuation of the original trilogy, so older Fable games’ controls and combat rules should not be assumed to apply. Playground Games describes the reboot’s combat as “style-weaving”: fluidly combining melee, ranged attacks, and magic rather than sticking to a single approach.

That flexibility is meant to matter in encounters with mixed enemy groups. Playground general manager Ralph Fulton says players will need to think about crowd control, target priority, and which attack style suits the challenge. The developer also says enemies have strengths and weaknesses to exploit.
What difficulty options are confirmed?
Playground has confirmed that players can choose a combat intensity suited either to a more relaxed, story-focused experience or to a greater challenge that asks them to master the mechanics. The cited developer description does not give the settings’ names or number, or explain their precise effects.

It is therefore not established whether intensity changes enemy health, damage, behavior, rewards, or progression, or whether players can change it at any time. Choose based on the kind of combat experience you want; wait for more detailed settings information if you need to know exactly how a particular option is tuned.
Which weapons and spells should you use?
A Gamescom 2026 hands-on preview showed distinct options, but it did not establish a final-game ranking or comparable damage figures. These are examples from the demo build, not guarantees that every detail or balance value will ship unchanged.
| Demo option | Observed tradeoff | When it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| Two-handed Bower Hammer | Slower, powerful attacks with broad swings that could catch multiple enemies; a charged attack covered ground with repeated strikes. | When you want heavy melee hits and wide coverage. |
| Deepwood Bow | Slower to draw but accurate; the preview used it to target skeleton heads before closing into melee. | When you want to aim carefully at a specific target or vulnerable area. |
| Repeater Crossbow | Fired weaker bolts quickly; the preview author used it to clear weaker Wraiths rapidly. | When you want a faster ranged attack and to switch pressure between targets. |
| Spells | The preview included Fireball, chaining Lightning, Lift, Push, Rush, and Befowl. | When damage, movement, interruption, or crowd control fits the encounter. |
The preview described ranged attacks staggering enemies when they hit vulnerable areas, including the Lantern Keeper’s lantern weakspot. It also showed Lift raising enemies for follow-up ranged attacks or Lightning, while Befowl temporarily turned people into harmless chickens. These illustrate ways to make openings; they are not confirmed as required tactics.

How to get better at fighting
Rather than relying on a fixed “best build,” approach combat as a series of decisions: identify the threats, disrupt or target the ones that matter, then change range or attack style as openings appear. The following ideas combine Playground’s stated design goals with examples seen in the Gamescom demo.
Against groups, disrupt before committing
When several enemies threaten you, a control spell such as Lift may create room to follow up, while the demo’s Befowl spell temporarily removed people from the fight. These are preview examples; the best response depends on the enemy mix and the final game’s mechanics.
Use ranged attacks to target weaknesses
Look for vulnerable areas rather than firing indiscriminately. In the demo, hitting weakspots with ranged attacks could stagger enemies, and the Lantern Keeper’s lantern was reported as an especially effective target.

Match melee pace to the opening
The demo’s hammer traded slower swings for heavy hits and broad coverage. That makes it a useful example of a weapon for catching several nearby enemies, but not proof that it is stronger overall than faster or more precise options.

The preview observed both parries and dodges. It reported that a successful parry could stagger a skeleton and open a counterattack; that specific effect should not be assumed for every enemy type.
Experiment as you unlock more tools
Playground says new weapons, abilities, and magical powers unlock as the player progresses. Revisit your approach when you gain new options: the combination that suits one encounter may not be the most useful for another.
