Choose an external HDD when capacity and cost matter most; choose an external SSD when speed, silence, shock resistance, or frequent file movement matter more. For many people, the best answer is both: keep active projects and frequently played games on an SSD, then use a larger HDD for archives and a second backup copy.

The short answer

External hard disk drives (HDDs) store data on spinning platters read by moving heads. External solid-state drives (SSDs) store data in flash memory and have no moving parts. That difference explains the practical trade-off:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • HDD: lower cost per gigabyte, high capacities, and a strong fit for computer backups, media libraries, NAS storage, surveillance footage, and long-term archives.
  • SSD: faster access, quieter operation, better resistance to drops and vibration, and a better fit for active projects, travel, game-load-time improvements, and repeated large-file transfers.

Western Digital describes HDDs as “Lower, unbeatable value” for cost per gigabyte and SSDs as “High (premium cost).” Its recommended HDD uses include backups, media libraries, NAS, surveillance, and long-term storage; SSD uses include operating systems, applications, active projects, and gaming speed.

Storage demand is rising sharply. A Western Digital projection puts global data creation at 132.4 zettabytes in 2023 and 393.9 zettabytes by 2028. That scale makes capacity-per-dollar important, especially when you are keeping several copies of irreplaceable files.

HDD and SSD differences that affect your decision

Capacity and price

HDDs generally provide more capacity for the money. That matters when your backup contains several computers, years of photos, raw video, disk images, or a large game library. SSDs cost more per terabyte, so an SSD-only archive can become expensive as your collection grows.

Capacity is not merely a convenience. A backup drive that is too small forces you to exclude folders, rotate drives constantly, or delete older versions. Buy enough room for the data you have now plus realistic growth, and leave free space for temporary copies and file-system overhead.

Sequential and random performance

An SSD responds faster for both sequential work, such as moving a large video file, and random work, such as opening many small project files. An HDD can still handle backups and media playback well, but its mechanical heads must seek across the platters, so many small operations feel slower.

The USB interface and the computer’s port can limit either drive. A fast SSD connected through a slower port, hub, cable, or enclosure will not deliver its potential. Check that the drive, cable, enclosure, and host support the same USB-C or USB 3.2 capability, and connect directly to the computer when troubleshooting performance.

Noise, heat, and power

An SSD has no spinning mechanism, so it is silent during normal operation and usually produces less vibration. An HDD can make audible spin-up, seeking, or vibration sounds, which may matter in a quiet office or recording room.

Portable and desktop HDDs use different enclosure and power designs. A desktop model may be intended to remain at a desk with its own power adapter, while a portable model is designed around USB power. Confirm the manufacturer’s power requirements before assuming a drive will work from a laptop, tablet, game console, or unpowered hub.

Shock resistance and portability

Because an SSD has no moving parts, it is generally the safer choice for frequent travel, field shoots, and situations where the drive may be moved while operating. An HDD is more vulnerable to mechanical shock, particularly while its platters are spinning.

A rugged HDD can still be appropriate when capacity is the priority. Western Digital lists the G-DRIVE ArmorATD as IP54-rated for rain and dust, with crush resistance up to 1,000 pounds. Protection ratings apply to the specified product and conditions; they do not make any drive waterproof or indestructible.

External HDD vs SSD: comparison at a glance

Factor External HDD External SSD
Storage mechanism Spinning platters and moving read/write heads Flash memory with no moving parts
Cost per gigabyte Lower; Western Digital characterizes it as “Lower, unbeatable value” Higher; Western Digital characterizes it as “High (premium cost)”
Best-fit workloads Backups, media libraries, NAS, surveillance, long-term storage Operating systems, applications, active projects, gaming speed
Large-library capacity Usually the economical way to store many terabytes Technically suitable, but the premium grows with capacity
Access and transfer behavior Slower, especially for random access and many small files Faster sequential and random access
Game loading Stores many games cheaply; load times are generally longer Shorter load times when the game and platform support external SSD play
Noise Can produce spin and seek sounds Silent because there are no moving parts
Travel and shock Needs more care; rugged models add environmental protection Better suited to frequent handling and movement
Interface USB-C and USB 3.2 models are available USB-C and USB 3.2 models are available
File-system compatibility exFAT is natively readable and writable on macOS and Windows. NTFS is read-only on macOS by default; APFS and HFS+ are not natively readable on Windows.

Encryption features, warranty length, included software, and power requirements vary by model and region. Treat them as model-level buying checks rather than HDD-versus-SSD guarantees.

Which drive is best for computer backups?

For a desk-based backup, a high-capacity desktop HDD such as WD My Book usually gives the most storage per dollar. For portable backups, a bus-powered model such as WD My Passport is easier to carry between locations. An SSD is useful when backups must finish quickly, the drive is handled frequently, or the backup includes an active working set that you also browse and edit.

Use more than one copy

A single external drive is not a complete backup strategy. Theft, fire, ransomware, accidental deletion, cable failure, mechanical failure, and user error can all remove the only copy. Keep at least two independent copies, with one stored separately or off-site. For especially important data, combine a local drive with an off-site or cloud copy.

A practical backup procedure

  1. Estimate the size of the folders, computer images, photo catalogs, and project files you need to protect.
  2. Choose an HDD when the priority is affordable capacity; choose an SSD when backup speed, portability, or frequent browsing matters more.
  3. Format the drive with a file system your computers can both read and write. exFAT is the straightforward native choice for macOS-and-Windows use.
  4. Run the first full backup while the computer is connected to reliable power and the drive is connected directly rather than through a questionable hub.
  5. Create a second copy on another physical drive or at a separate location.
  6. Schedule recurring backups and retain older versions where your backup software supports versioning.
  7. Periodically open files from the backup and perform a test restore. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a verified recovery plan.

Which is better for a gaming library?

Modern games can exceed 100GB each. If your goal is to keep many titles installed or archived, an external HDD can hold more games for less money. An external SSD is worthwhile when you frequently move games, replay titles with long loading screens, or value a quieter setup.

PlayStation compatibility

On PS5, PS5 games stored on USB external storage must be copied back to the console’s internal SSD before they can be played. An external USB drive can therefore serve as an inexpensive PS5 game archive, but it does not replace the internal storage for direct play. PS4 games can run from USB storage.

That distinction changes the buying decision: an HDD is often the sensible PS5 archive tier, while an SSD reduces transfer time when you move games back to the internal drive. For PS4 games that you play directly from USB, an SSD can improve loading responsiveness.

Gaming buying checklist

  • Confirm the console or PC’s supported external-storage format and capacity limits.
  • Check whether your games can run directly from external storage or must be copied internally.
  • Use the fastest port and a suitable cable; a hub or older port can bottleneck an SSD.
  • Choose HDD capacity for a broad catalog and SSD speed for a smaller, actively played set.

Which drive is best for large photo, video, and media files?

Archive and backup tier

For completed projects, camera originals, music libraries, and media that you mainly read occasionally, an HDD is usually the economical archive. Its lower cost per terabyte makes it easier to keep multiple copies instead of putting all your money into one expensive device.

Active-editing and scratch tier

For video editing, photo catalogs, audio sessions, 3D assets, and other work that repeatedly reads and writes large files, an SSD is the better active tier. Faster access reduces waiting when loading source clips, generating previews, moving caches, or switching between projects. Keep the finished work on an HDD archive and maintain a separate backup.

Use a two-tier workflow

  1. Copy camera cards or incoming media to the SSD working drive.
  2. Keep the original files on a second device before formatting cards or deleting ingest copies.
  3. Edit and cache on the SSD.
  4. Move completed projects to a larger HDD archive.
  5. Back up both the working SSD and the archive HDD to independent storage.

Travel and field work

Choose an SSD when the drive will travel daily, be connected while moving, or be handled on location. Its lack of moving parts lowers the risk from bumps and vibration, and its silent operation is useful around microphones and cameras.

Choose a rugged HDD when you need substantially more capacity and the enclosure’s protection matches the trip. The G-DRIVE ArmorATD example carries an IP54 rain-and-dust rating and crush resistance up to 1,000 pounds. Keep the drive disconnected and protected during transport even when it is ruggedized.

File systems, encryption, and platform compatibility

File systems

Western Digital states that exFAT is natively readable and writable on both macOS and Windows. NTFS is read-only on macOS by default, while APFS and HFS+ are not natively readable on Windows. If a drive will move between those operating systems, select exFAT unless a specific backup application requires another format.

Reformatting erases the existing contents. Copy any files you need before changing the file system, and eject the drive properly before unplugging it.

Encryption

Encryption is a security feature, not an HDD-versus-SSD feature. Check whether the exact drive or enclosure offers hardware encryption, password management, or bundled software. You can also use the operating system’s encryption tools, but make sure recovery keys are stored safely; losing the key can make a perfectly healthy drive unreadable.

Interface and bottlenecks

USB-C describes the connector, not automatically the transfer speed. USB 3.2 support, cable quality, enclosure electronics, the computer’s port, and any hub between the drive and host all affect real performance. If an SSD seems no faster than an HDD, test it on a direct connection with a known-capable cable and verify that the host port supports the advertised mode.

Reliability: what failure statistics can and cannot tell you

Backblaze’s 2024 Drive Stats report analyzed 298,954 qualifying drives and reported a 1.57% annualized failure rate for all listed drives. Its 2025 report analyzed 344,196 drives across 30 models and reported a 1.36% yearly annualized failure rate, a 1.13% Q4 annualized failure rate, and a 1.30% lifetime annualized failure rate.

Those figures describe a monitored data-center fleet with stated inclusion criteria. They are not a promise for an individual consumer drive, and they do not measure every risk in a home setup. Mechanical shock, damaged cables, theft, ransomware, overheating, controller failure, and accidental deletion remain separate hazards. The practical lesson is simple: always keep another copy and test that you can restore it.

How to choose: a decision framework

Choose an external HDD when…

  • You need the most terabytes for a fixed budget.
  • Your main job is backup, archiving, media storage, surveillance retention, or a large game library.
  • The drive will remain at a desk or in a protected storage location.
  • You can afford and maintain a second independent copy.

Choose an external SSD when…

  • You work directly from the drive and move large files repeatedly.
  • You travel often or expect bumps and vibration.
  • Quiet operation matters.
  • Shorter game loading or faster game transfers justifies the higher cost per terabyte.

Choose both when…

  • You need fast active storage and economical long-term capacity.
  • You want an SSD working tier plus an HDD archive and backup tier.
  • You are building a backup plan that can survive the loss of one device.

Capacity planning and the two-drive strategy

Do not size a drive only for today’s folder total. Include operating-system images, duplicate exports, project versions, game updates, and growth. A drive that is nearly full is harder to use for temporary work and future backups.

Large-capacity HDDs can materially change retention economics. In a Western Digital case study, 26TB WD Ultrastar HC590 drives increased a pet retailer’s retention period from 30 days to 180 days and delivered six times the capacity in the same footprint. That is a specific deployment result, not a guarantee that every user will achieve the same ratio, but it illustrates why HDDs remain attractive for bulk archives.

A practical arrangement is an SSD sized for current projects and frequently played games, a larger HDD for completed media and less frequently used games, and another independent copy stored separately or off-site. Label each drive, track what it contains, and perform restore tests on a schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final recommendation

For most backup and large-media needs, buy the largest dependable external HDD your budget supports, then protect it with a second copy. For active editing, travel, or faster game loading, add an external SSD. If you can afford only one drive, choose based on the dominant job: HDD for capacity and archives, SSD for speed and mobility. The strongest general-purpose setup is the “both/and” approach Western Digital describes: SSD for active work and HDD for bulk storage, with backup copies kept independent of both.
