NordVPN is the performance winner in the independent head-to-head results available here: Artifact Security’s June 2026 VPN Performance World Tour Round 1 awarded it 91 points and Platinum, while ExpressVPN received 84 and Gold. That is one published testing round, not proof that NordVPN is the better choice for every person, location, device or priority. The “12” below are comparison points—not twelve separate hands-on tests or a twelve-category scorecard.
What the 2026 performance result does—and does not—show
Artifact Security’s June 2026 Round 1 report covered five VPN providers. NordVPN was the only provider awarded Platinum; ExpressVPN earned Gold. The report also attributed its fastest download and upload results—908 Mbps and 920 Mbps, respectively—to NordVPN. These are the report’s results for its test conditions, not speeds a customer should expect on a home connection.

The report describes 55 routes from five origin cities and says it assessed speed and consistency, connection time, leaks, kill switches and feature verification. It says the test was AMTSO-aligned. That scope is useful, but it cannot stand in for every server, route, operating system, device or household network. It also does not establish that NordVPN wins on every individual measure simply because it won the overall award. The report attributed its lowest latency result, 183 ms, to ProtonVPN—not to either service in this comparison.

So the clearest answer is limited but meaningful: NordVPN led this independent published round overall and recorded its top download and upload figures. The evidence does not settle which service is faster from your home, or which one better fits your security, device or billing needs.

ExpressVPN vs NordVPN: 12 comparison points
This checklist separates reported test coverage, provider-published specifications and information not established by the available comparison. Those kinds of evidence are not interchangeable.
| # | Comparison point | What the available evidence says | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Overall independent performance result | Artifact Security’s June 2026 Round 1 gave NordVPN 91 and Platinum; ExpressVPN scored 84 and Gold. | NordVPN won this round’s overall award. It is a scoped result, not a universal ranking. |
| 2 | Download and upload performance | Artifact Security reported the round’s fastest download (908 Mbps) and upload (920 Mbps) for NordVPN. | These are test results under the report’s conditions, not guaranteed or typical customer speeds. |
| 3 | Consistency and connection time | The report says it tested speed and consistency and connection time. The available evidence does not provide a specific head-to-head result for those measures. | Do not infer that either service is more consistent or connects faster from the overall award alone. |
| 4 | Leaks and kill switch | The report says it checked leaks and kill-switch behavior. The available evidence does not state a comparative pass rate or detailed result for either provider. | The test coverage is relevant, but it is not enough to claim one service had fewer leaks or a more reliable kill switch. |
| 5 | VPN protocols | ExpressVPN describes its Lightway protocol; NordVPN’s proprietary protocol is NordLynx. RTINGS’ July 2026 comparison identifies both as proprietary protocols. | Both offer a provider-specific protocol. The information here does not establish a protocol-level winner apart from the separate performance round. |
| 6 | Audits and their scope | ExpressVPN’s Trust Center lists reports including a KPMG audit of privacy commitments in June 2025 and reviews of Lightway. | Check the auditor, date and audited subject rather than comparing audit counts. The evidence here does not support a like-for-like audit verdict between the two services. |
| 7 | Server and location availability | ExpressVPN announced 214 app-selectable locations across 113 countries on July 7, 2026. This is the provider’s stated network size; a comparable independently verified NordVPN figure is not established here. | Location totals are not a head-to-head win when they come from one provider’s claim and a comparable figure is unavailable. Check the locations you need in each provider’s current app or documentation. |
| 8 | Operating systems and simultaneous devices | RTINGS’ July 2026 comparison lists a maximum of 10 connected devices for NordVPN and 8 for ExpressVPN. ExpressVPN’s pricing page separately lists 10, 12 and 14 simultaneous devices for Basic, Advanced and Pro. | Device limits depend on the source and, for ExpressVPN, the plan. Verify the allowance for the exact plan and platform you intend to use; the figures should not be treated as timeless brand-wide limits. |
| 9 | Routers, TVs and consoles | NordVPN documents VPN-compatible or preconfigured router setups for devices without VPN apps. ExpressVPN offers router support and its Aircove hardware. | A router can extend VPN coverage to devices that cannot run a VPN app, but it is an optional setup path—not a requirement to use either service. Confirm router and device compatibility before buying hardware. |
| 10 | Streaming | The available material contains provider feature claims, not a controlled head-to-head test of named streaming services. | It does not establish which service works better with a particular streaming platform. Availability can vary; do not treat a general streaming claim as a tested guarantee. |
| 11 | Privacy and security features | ExpressVPN describes AES-256 encryption, private DNS, kill-switch and leak protections, automatic obfuscation on supported platforms, and TrustedServer servers that use RAM. These are provider descriptions, not all independently verified findings in the performance report. | Read each feature’s platform and audit scope. A VPN can protect a connection in relevant circumstances, but these specifications do not make a user anonymous. |
| 12 | Plan features and total cost | ExpressVPN’s US pricing page showed three introductory 28-month offers and annual renewal rates; a comparable live NordVPN price was not established here. | Compare the exact plan, first-term total and renewal amount at checkout. There is not enough comparable pricing evidence to name a price winner. |
How to choose based on what matters most
Choose NordVPN if the published performance result is your deciding factor
NordVPN has the stronger evidence-based case for performance in this comparison: it won Artifact Security’s June 2026 Round 1 overall and had the report’s fastest download and upload measurements. Treat that as a reason to shortlist it, not as a promise about performance on your particular route or device.

Compare your own route and device before prioritizing speed
Performance depends on where you connect from, which server and protocol you use, your device and your underlying connection. The report’s five origin cities and 55 routes provide a broader basis than a single test location, but do not cover every buyer’s circumstances. Where either service offers a trial or refund option under the applicable terms, use the provider’s current policy to check whether a practical evaluation is possible in your region.

Evaluate security claims by evidence, not feature count
ExpressVPN’s product documentation describes several specific protections and its Trust Center lists audits, including KPMG’s June 2025 privacy-commitments audit. Those facts do not by themselves prove it is safer than NordVPN—or vice versa. For any security claim that matters to you, look for the scope and date of the relevant audit or test, and whether it covers the app, protocol, infrastructure or policy in question.

Match device limits to the plan you would actually buy
The July 2026 RTINGS comparison’s 10-device NordVPN and 8-device ExpressVPN figures do not align with ExpressVPN’s newer tiered pricing page, which lists 10, 12 and 14 devices across Basic, Advanced and Pro. That is a practical reason to check current plan terms rather than relying on a single generic device-limit figure. For TVs, consoles or other devices without native VPN apps, consider whether a compatible router setup makes sense for your household.
