Hopper’s September 25 snapshot puts average domestic round-trip airfare at $402 for Thanksgiving and $452 for Christmas, but those are broad search-based averages—not quotes for your itinerary. For Thanksgiving, KAYAK’s September 29 analysis points to fares historically being lowest about five weeks before the holiday, while Hopper recommends booking before Halloween. Treat both as timing signals, compare the itinerary you would actually take, and book when its price, schedule and terms work for you.
What holiday travel costs look like in 2026
Hopper’s September 25, 2026 report gives these U.S. domestic averages. They describe a recent search snapshot, not a guaranteed fare or hotel rate for a particular destination or date. Hopper says its airfare figures are demand-weighted averages of the 10th percentile of prices available during the searches used for the report.

Use these figures to understand the broad price climate, not to decide whether your particular fare is good. Your route, travel dates, schedule and lodging needs may produce a very different total.

For Thanksgiving, KAYAK’s September 29, 2026 analysis says domestic fares have historically been lowest about five weeks before the holiday—around the week of October 19 in 2026—and warns that waiting until the final two weeks can become expensive. Hopper’s September 25 index recommends monitoring fares and booking before Halloween. These are compatible broad signals, not route-specific forecasts or deadlines. Neither guarantees that waiting will lower your fare.

KAYAK’s main holiday comparison uses U.S.-origin searches from April 1 to September 1, 2026; its airfare trend charts use searches from August 1 to September 27. Hopper’s average fares come from a recent one-week search window. Both describe observed searches, and prices can change.
For Christmas, do not treat an older booking window as a 2026 prediction. Google’s September 9, 2025 analysis of round-trip fares observed from January 1, 2021, through August 1, 2025, found historical lowest-price averages 51 days before Christmas and 35 days before Thanksgiving. Those are retrospective averages, not current-year advice. Google also found little advantage to choosing a particular weekday to book.

Can changing your travel dates lower the cost?
It can. KAYAK and Hopper identify lower-cost dates in their respective 2026 comparisons, but their examples use different data and comparison points. Do not combine them into a single estimate of what you will save.

Hopper also says returning Monday or Tuesday after Thanksgiving can cost less than returning Sunday. A less expensive date is only useful if the altered schedule works for your plans. Traveling on the holiday or shifting a return may mean giving up time with family, arranging extra nights, or changing work commitments.

Check the whole trip, not just the airfare
- Compare the total airfare and lodging cost for the exact dates, including fees you expect to pay.
- Check departure and arrival times, connection count, and whether holiday-day travel is realistic for you.
- Compare nonstop and connecting options against both price and the disruption tradeoff.
- Read refund and change rules, including the terms of any paid flexibility or disruption product.
- If you must be present for a fixed celebration, consider whether you can arrive a day early as a buffer.
KAYAK says selected two-one-way “Hacker Fare” combinations in its sample could save up to 29% domestically or 30% internationally. These are maximums, not typical savings. Because a split-ticket itinerary can have different conditions, compare each leg’s terms and the practical consequences of a delay before choosing it.
How to reduce schedule and disruption risk
When arriving late would jeopardize a fixed event, a slightly cheaper itinerary may not be the better choice. Hopper recommends considering early departures, direct flights, and arriving a day before the event when possible. Hopper also reports that departures after 9 a.m. are twice as likely to be delayed as departures from 5–8 a.m.; that is a general statistic reported by Hopper, not a prediction for an individual flight.

Hopper discusses flexible cancellation or change options and its own Disruption Assistance. These are provider-specific products, not interchangeable with travel insurance. Before paying for an add-on, check the current terms: what qualifies, what the provider will do or reimburse, and any exclusions or limits. Do not assume a label such as “flexible” covers every change or disruption.

What traveler surveys can—and cannot—tell you
AAA – The Auto Club Group’s September 28, 2026 release reports an online survey of 400 North Carolina residents conducted August 5–13, 2026, with a maximum margin of error of ±4.9 percentage points for all respondents. In that survey, 47% cited budget concerns, 38% waited for lower prices, and 51% of those who delayed said they later paid more. These are self-reported North Carolina results, not a national finding or proof that waiting caused higher prices.

AAA spokesperson Tiffany Wright said: “Travelers don’t need to book the first itinerary they find, but this is a good time to start researching options, comparing prices and making decisions before choices become more limited.” That is planning guidance, not a fare guarantee.
For 2026 holiday trips from outside the United States, or for a particular route, the broad U.S.-oriented comparisons here do not establish a best booking window. Use them as context and judge the dates, total cost and terms of your own itinerary.
