Which one should you choose?
Choose based on your device count
Do not assume the connection limits are directly comparable without checking the exact plan. RTINGS lists 10 simultaneous connections for its NordVPN variant and 8 for its ExpressVPN variant. ExpressVPN’s own feature page, accessed in 2026, advertises up to 14 active connections. These figures conflict for ExpressVPN, and the available information does not explain whether plan or product differences account for it. Confirm the limit and what the provider counts as an active connection before subscribing.

Choose based on features you will actually use
ExpressVPN’s feature page highlights its Lightway protocol, leak protections, private DNS, split tunneling, and automatic obfuscation on supported platforms. It also describes coverage in 113 countries, a vendor-published figure that may change and whose geographic definition is not detailed here. Check the current app and server availability for the country and device you need.

Choose based on price and renewal terms
There is no reliable price winner in the available comparison: the official pricing pages are dynamic, and the amounts were not available in the page extracts. Open each provider’s current pricing page and compare the same billing period, the total charged today, the renewal price, and the renewal interval. A low introductory rate is not the same as a low recurring cost.
What does the independent speed and security comparison show?
RTINGS’ comparison, updated July 10, 2026, says both services offer strong security and rates them similarly for speed and security in its summary. It also flags transparency and business-practice concerns. Its findings are useful as a test-based counterweight to provider marketing, but the results are tied to RTINGS’ methodology and test conditions; your location, internet connection, device, server choice, and time of day can produce different results. The comparison does not establish that one service will be faster for every user.

Use the test as one input, not a guarantee. If speed is decisive, evaluate the service on the connection and devices you actually use, and compare nearby and destination-country servers where relevant.
How strong are each provider’s privacy claims?
What the providers say about audits
NordVPN says it is based in Panama and identifies PwC Switzerland and Deloitte as reviewers of its no-logs claims. Its official page contains an unresolved chronology inconsistency: the opening summary refers to six reviews through 2025, while a later section lists five reviews through 2024. ExpressVPN’s Trust Center lists audits and assessments by firms including KPMG, Cure53, Praetorian, PwC Switzerland, and F-Secure, as well as audits related to its Aircove routers. What an audit can—and cannot—establish
An audit applies to the systems, policies, scope, and date described in its report. It is not proof that a VPN makes you anonymous in every situation, or that every part of a service remains unchanged afterward. Read the underlying report if a particular claim matters to your decision, and distinguish the provider’s description of its policy from what an independent review actually examined.

What to verify before you subscribe
- Compare like-for-like plans. Open NordVPN’s pricing page and ExpressVPN’s pricing page. Check the plan duration, amount due now, renewal price, and renewal interval in the live checkout terms.
- Confirm the device allowance. Check the active-connection limit for the exact plan, and whether the provider’s definition covers simultaneous connections across your devices. The published figures differ by source for ExpressVPN.
- Check platform support. Confirm the specific protocol and features you care about—such as split tunneling, obfuscation, specialty servers, or a kill switch—are available in the app or device you use.
- Check your needed locations. Verify that the service currently offers appropriate servers for your home country and destination; a country-coverage figure alone does not establish availability in a particular city or server.
- Read the relevant audit report. Focus on its date, systems reviewed, scope, and findings instead of relying only on a marketing-page summary.
Verdict: match the service to your priorities
RTINGS’ July 2026 comparison does not produce a universal performance winner: it describes similarly strong security and speed while noting concerns about transparency and business practices. ExpressVPN may suit someone drawn to its advertised Lightway protocol, split tunneling, or stated country coverage; NordVPN may suit someone who values its described specialty-server options. Those are feature-fit distinctions, not proof of superior privacy or speed. Make the final call using current renewal pricing, verified connection limits, the platforms you use, and the scope of the audit evidence that matters to you.
