You get header filters, structured references, and calculated-column behavior; an optional total row adds table-specific aggregate controls. Your existing formulas do not all switch to structured references automatically.
What Ctrl+T changes
Select a cell in your data and press Ctrl+T to open Excel’s Create Table dialog. Check the proposed range and choose whether it has headers. If you confirm that it does, Excel uses the top row as column names; otherwise, it supplies headers. The result is a table object with a table name and named columns, rather than an ordinary block of cells. Microsoft documents this workflow in its structured references guidance.

Some changes are immediately visible, such as table formatting and filter arrows on the header row. Others are structural: formulas can refer to table and column names, and table columns can carry calculated-column behavior. The table overview from Microsoft Support describes these table features.
Excel table vs. regular range

A regular range is still usable: you can format it, sort it, filter it, and write formulas in it. Ctrl+T matters when you want Excel to treat a list as a continuing, column-based data structure.

Do formulas change when you press Ctrl+T?
Not all of them. Converting a range does not automatically rewrite existing A1-style formulas as structured references. A formula already written with ordinary cell addresses remains an ordinary-reference formula unless you edit it. The benefit is that you can use table and column names in new formulas, and those structured references adjust with table data.
Example: a named column reference
If a table is named DeptSales and has a column called Sales Amount, a formula can refer to that column as DeptSales[Sales Amount]. This identifies the table column by name rather than relying on a fixed range address.

Calculated columns
When you enter a formula in a table column, Excel can fill it down the column as a calculated column. This is table-specific convenience; creating a table does not promise to repair inconsistent formulas or rewrite every formula already in the workbook. Microsoft’s structured references documentation covers both calculated columns and the treatment of existing references.
What the filter and total-row controls do
Header filters
Table headers have filter controls by default, making it straightforward to sort or filter the list by column. A normal range can also be sorted or filtered using worksheet tools, but those controls do not make it a table.

Optional total row
You can enable a table’s total row and choose an aggregate for a column. Microsoft explains that the default total-row choices use SUBTOTAL, which by default excludes rows hidden by filtering. See Microsoft’s instructions for totaling table data.
When a table is useful—and when a range is better
- Choose a table for a continuing list of records when named columns, header filtering, calculated-column fill, or references that track additions and removals will help maintain the worksheet.
- Keep a regular range for a one-off block, a layout where table-specific behavior is unwanted, or an area reserved for a dynamic-array formula that needs to spill.
Dynamic-array spill formulas are not supported inside Excel tables. Place the spill formula in worksheet cells outside the table and refer to table data as needed. Microsoft explains the limitation in its dynamic-array and spilled-range guidance.

How to turn a table back into a range
- Click a cell inside the table.
- Open the Table Design tab (its location varies by platform) and choose Convert to Range.
- Confirm the conversion if Excel asks. The table object and its table-specific features are removed.
After conversion, header filter arrows and the Table Design tab disappear. Formulas that used structured references become ordinary cell references. Some table styling may remain, but the former table no longer automatically expands with neighboring added rows or columns. See Microsoft’s conversion instructions.
Creating a table and converting it back are not mirror-image formula changes: creation does not automatically convert old cell references to structured references, while conversion changes structured references into ordinary references.

Availability and interface differences
Microsoft lists structured references for Microsoft 365 on Windows and Mac, Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, 2016, and Excel Mobile. Its table overview lists Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. Conversion instructions cover Windows, Mac, and Web. Tab names and command placement can vary by platform and release.
