Excel Easter Eggs and Hidden Games: How to Find the Legacy Games

Excel’s documented hidden games are tied to Excel 95, Excel 97, and a pre-SR-1 version of Excel 2000. Their old instructions and dependencies do not make them current Microsoft 365 features.

Excel’s best-documented hidden games belong to specific older releases: the Hall of Tortured Souls in Excel 95, a flight simulator in Excel 97, and Dev Hunter in Excel 2000. Their activation methods depend on the original software and, in some cases, obsolete dependencies. They are not modes you can turn on in current Microsoft 365.

Which Excel releases had hidden games?

Excel release Game How it was accessed Dependencies and evidence
Excel 95 Hall of Tortured Souls, a Doom-style 3D maze displaying developer credits Reported sequence starts at row 95; select the second cell with Tab, then use Help and Tech Support Historical steps reported by PC Gamer; not a currently tested walkthrough. PC Gamer
Excel 97 Flight Simulator Community-documented keyboard and Chart Wizard sequence Excel 97; early DirectDraw is mentioned in an interview. Steps are from a user-submitted guide, and reports of success in later releases are inconsistent. EEggs guide; Ed Fries interview
Excel 2000, before Service Release 1 Dev Hunter, a car-driving game Publish the worksheet as an interactive web page, open it in Internet Explorer, select row 2000 and column WC, then use the documented keyboard-and-click sequence on the Office logo Excel 2000 before SR-1, Internet Explorer, and DirectX; the egg is omitted in SR-1 and later. Pearson sample chapter

The table distinguishes the existence of a game from the reliability of any surviving instructions. Dev Hunter has the clearest version and dependency limits in the cited material; the Excel 97 activation sequence is community-documented, while the Excel 95 description and route come from secondary reporting.

Excel 95: Hall of Tortured Souls

PC Gamer describes the Hall of Tortured Souls as a Doom-style 3D maze that reveals developer credits. Its reported route begins at row 95: use Tab to select the second cell, then open Help and choose Tech Support. These are historical instructions reported for Excel 95, not a verified procedure for later Excel versions or modern computers. PC Gamer’s account

Excel 97: flight simulator

A user-submitted EEggs guide documents this sequence for Excel 97. Treat it as a community-reported method for the relevant legacy release, not a dependable trick for current Excel:

The guide specifies Excel 97 SR-1 or later, but its comments report failures in Excel 2000, Excel XP, and Excel 2007. That inconsistency is a reason not to assume the sequence transfers to later releases. Read the EEggs guide and comments

Former Excel programmer Ed Fries said early Easter eggs followed a rule: “we had a kind of weird rule about easter eggs, which was that they were perfectly fine to include in the code, as long as there was no code that actually executed the easter egg!” His interview places his Excel work from 1986 to about 1991 and says the Flight Simulator came later. The quote describes early practice; it does not establish that he created the Excel 97 game. The interview also notes the egg’s reliance on an early DirectDraw version. Ed Fries interview

Excel 2000: Dev Hunter

Dev Hunter is described as a car-driving game in a Pearson sample chapter. Its instructions depend on an unusually narrow setup: Excel 2000 before Service Release 1, Internet Explorer, and DirectX. The chapter describes publishing the worksheet as an interactive web page, opening it in Internet Explorer, selecting row 2000 and column WC, and then using a keyboard combination and clicking the Office logo. It says the Easter egg is absent from Service Release 1 and later. Pearson sample chapter

Because the documented route requires obsolete software and a specific pre-SR-1 release, it is best understood as a record of how the game was accessed—not as a practical set of steps for a current PC.

Can you play these games in current Excel?

There is no supported basis here for presenting Microsoft 365 as a way to reproduce these legacy Easter eggs. In a Microsoft Q&A response, the author says Office 97 and Office 2000 are out of support, could not test those old versions, and could not reproduce the process in Microsoft 365. That community answer supports caution, not a comprehensive Microsoft declaration that every historical egg was removed. Microsoft Q&A

An old Office CD-ROM may be a historical route to obtaining the software, but owning one does not guarantee installation or compatibility with a modern computer. The game’s dependencies matter too: Dev Hunter, for example, calls for Internet Explorer and DirectX as well as the specific Excel release. Do not assume that installing a legacy copy on a current device will make the instructions work. Microsoft Q&A; Pearson sample chapter

What about hidden games in later Excel versions?

Claims about additional Excel games, including claims tied to Excel 2003, are not sufficiently corroborated by the sources cited here to treat them as established. The documented examples above are tied to Excel 95, Excel 97, and pre-Service Release 1 Excel 2000; that does not prove no other Easter eggs ever existed.
