A stocked RV can offer shelter, storage, cooking, sanitation, and power in some emergencies—but it is not a universal evacuation plan. A Reddit discussion in r/prepping captures both the reassurance some owners find in having one ready and the practical limits that can matter when a disaster hits.
What readers say about keeping an RV ready
One commenter in r/prepping says their family keeps a Class C RV stocked and ready. They describe living in a fire-prone area, having been placed under pre-evacuation status, but not having needed to evacuate. Their account is a personal report, not independent confirmation that the RV could handle every emergency or route.

The commenter says having the vehicle ready—and believing the family could leave quickly with food, shelter, and communication—brings peace of mind. Other commenters point to possible uses beyond evacuation, including backup shelter, a kitchen, bathroom, power, and communications. Those capabilities vary by RV and setup; they are not guaranteed in every vehicle or outage.

A large vehicle may be difficult to maneuver or may draw attention, and a plan that depends on driving can fail if roads are blocked or travel is unsafe. These are concerns raised by participants, not findings from a systematic survey.

The conversation is a collection of individual experiences and questions—not evidence of how many people stock an RV or how prepared readers overall are. One commenter asks, “wouldn’t a campervan be the ultimate prep?” Another asks, “What type of RV?” The answer depends less on a vehicle label than on the hazard, household, route, and supplies.
When an RV may help—and when leaving may not
An RV can combine transport and living space, which may be useful if evacuation is advised, roads remain passable, and the vehicle has fuel and supplies. It may also serve as backup space during some disruptions at home. But it is not inherently safe or self-sufficient, and a vehicle cannot remove the risks of driving during a fire, storm, flood, or other fast-moving event.

Before treating an RV as a bugout plan, consider the specific emergency and local instructions. The relevant question is not simply whether the vehicle is stocked, but whether it can safely reach a suitable destination and support everyone aboard for the time required.

- Hazard and timing: Is evacuation advised, and is there enough time to leave safely? For some events, sheltering in place or following local emergency instructions may be safer than driving.
- Route and access: Can the RV use likely evacuation routes, and can it navigate congestion, closures, narrow roads, or limited turning space?
- Fuel and water: Does the plan account for fuel availability and potable water, rather than assuming services will remain open?
- Household needs: Can the vehicle accommodate everyone, including children, older adults, people with disabilities, pets, medications, and essential equipment?
- Living support: What sleeping, cooking, sanitation, power, and communications functions does this specific RV provide, and what supplies or maintenance do they require?
- Practical upkeep and security: Can the household afford, maintain, store, and secure the vehicle and its supplies?
Build the emergency supplies around your household
FEMA’s Ready Campaign says, “Everyone should have some basic supplies on hand in order to survive for several days if an emergency occurs.” Its guidance is useful whether supplies are stored in an RV, at home, or in a portable vehicle kit.

FEMA’s 2024 checklist recommends one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days and at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food. The checklist also includes phone charging, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, flashlight, first-aid kit, whistle, dust mask, sanitation supplies, a wrench or pliers, can opener, and local maps. These are baseline recommendations, not proof that a particular RV is equipped for a specific emergency.
FEMA advises adapting the list to a household’s unique needs, including pets. Think through medications, mobility and accessibility needs, device charging, and other essentials that the general checklist may not cover. Keep supplies usable and check them periodically; a stored item is only helpful if it is available and in working condition when needed.

A portable kit for the vehicle
FEMA’s Ready Campaign also recommends considering smaller emergency kits for vehicles and other places where people spend time. A vehicle kit can complement, rather than replace, household supplies. Keep it appropriate to the vehicle and climate, and make sure its contents suit the people who may rely on it.
Plan for more than one way to respond
An RV is one possible part of a preparedness plan, not the plan by itself. Pair any vehicle strategy with a household supply kit and a clear understanding of what to do if travel is unsafe or the vehicle is unavailable. The Reddit commenters’ accounts show why a ready vehicle can feel reassuring; FEMA’s checklists offer a practical starting point for supplies, while the actual decision to travel must fit the hazard and official local guidance.
