Excel 4.0 macros (XLM) are a legacy macro technology; VBA macros are written in Visual Basic for Applications. They are different ways to automate Excel, not two names for the same feature. Microsoft identifies VBA as an alternative for replacing legacy macro behavior, but that does not mean an XLM workbook can be converted automatically or without checking whether the replacement works.
How Excel 4.0 macros and VBA differ
| Aspect | Excel 4.0 macros (XLM) | VBA |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A legacy Excel macro technology, also called XLM. | A distinct macro technology written in Visual Basic for Applications. |
| Role in an existing workbook | May be present in older workbooks that rely on legacy macro behavior. | Can be considered as an alternative when replacing legacy macro behavior. |
| Conversion certainty | The Microsoft sources cited here do not establish a complete command mapping, automatic conversion, or feature parity. Any replacement needs to be checked against the workbook’s required behavior. | |
| Security assessment | Macro type alone does not show whether a file is safe. Office security behavior depends on factors such as file origin, configuration, and organizational policy. | |
Microsoft describes Excel 4.0 (XLM) macros as an older macro type and points to VBA as an alternative for replacing legacy behavior in its Excel Macros support guidance. The sources do not establish a detailed comparison of syntax, speed, platform availability, or command coverage, so those are not reliable grounds here for choosing one.

What the difference means when maintaining a workbook
Identify the macro technology first
Before changing a workbook, determine whether its automation uses XLM, VBA, or both. The distinction matters because a plan to replace VBA code does not, by itself, account for behavior implemented with legacy XLM macros.
Describe the behavior you need to preserve
List the workbook tasks that must continue to work, including the inputs, outputs, and steps users depend on. Treat this as a practical migration checklist, not as a Microsoft-prescribed conversion procedure.

Replace deliberately and validate
If you choose VBA as a replacement direction, do not assume each XLM command has a direct equivalent or that a rewritten macro will behave identically. Test the replacement against the required tasks in a controlled environment and confirm the workbook’s results before relying on it.
Macro type is not a safety verdict
Microsoft’s Office security guidance says macros in files obtained from the internet are blocked by default in applicable configurations. Whether a macro runs can depend on Mark of the Web, trusted locations, trusted publishers, and administrator policy. The exact behavior is therefore configuration-sensitive; in a managed workplace, follow your organization’s instructions rather than changing security settings to make an unfamiliar file run. See Microsoft’s current guidance on macros from the internet.
Signing is not proof that a project is safe. Microsoft’s VBA security documentation states: “A digital signature does not necessarily guarantee the safety of a project, and you must decide whether you trust a project that has been digitally signed.” Assess the source and content, including when a signature is present. The guidance appears in Microsoft’s Security dialog box documentation, last updated September 13, 2021.
What to know about enabling XLM macros
A Microsoft Q&A moderator’s answer dated September 4, 2026 names the Trust Center option “Enable Excel 4.0 macros when VBA macros are enabled.” This is support guidance, not a guarantee that every Excel edition or organization policy exposes or honors that setting. Do not enable macros simply as a troubleshooting shortcut: only work with files from sources you trust, and follow applicable administrator policy.
