Sometimes. An electromagnetic brake needs a rectifier when its coil requires DC but the available supply is AC—and only if the brake or an upstream supply module does not already perform that conversion. Check the brake’s exact coil specification, wiring diagram and manufacturer-approved power arrangement before selecting a rectifier.
When does an electromagnetic brake need a rectifier?
The deciding factor is the coil’s required current type, not simply that the device is an electromagnetic brake. A DC-coil brake supplied from AC needs a suitable rectifier somewhere in its power path. If the available source is already the specified DC supply, or a compatible controller or supply module already rectifies AC, an additional rectifier may not be needed.

mayr describes bridge and half-wave rectifiers as ways to connect DC consumers—including electromagnetic brakes—to AC supplies. Its safety-brake overview also describes DC voltage for opening brakes being supplied through either type of rectifier. Those examples establish that both types are used; they do not make them interchangeable or identify one as universally correct. Follow the documentation for the particular brake and supply. mayr brake rectifier specifications and mayr safety-brake overview

Start with the brake’s exact model and manufacturer documentation. Record the electrical and operating details needed to match the brake to a supply:
#1 Best Overall
- [PACKAGE CONTENTS AND FIT] Contains 1 electromagnetic rectifier made for motor modules and brake rectifier systems; choose Type A for ~99V output or Type B for ~170V output to match your coil specifications.
- [AC TO OUTPUT CONVERSION] Engineered to convert AC power into the required output for electromagnetic brakes and clutches, providing consistent coil activation for controlled braking and clutch engagement.
- [DUAL VOLTAGE OPTIONS] Two selectable input/output ranges cover common industrial scenarios a lower-output option and a higher-output option to accommodate different supply configurations.
- [ROBUST PROTECTION CIRCUITS] Built-in input/output protection reduces susceptibility to electrical faults when driving inductive loads, helping maintain stable operation during frequency-based control.
- [SPACE-SAVING DIMENSIONS] Lightweight plastic shell measures 60 x 40 x 30 mm with tight sealing for in-junction-box mounting; wire and terminal versions allow matching to your wiring practice.
- Whether the coil requires AC or DC, and its specified voltage and current or power.
- The available supply’s voltage and whether it is AC or DC.
- The wiring diagram and the arrangement of any controller, rectifier or supply module already in the circuit.
- Ambient temperature and the expected operating conditions.
- Switching frequency and any required brake response time.
- Whether the application needs overexcitation to release the brake, reduced holding power, monitoring or feedback.
Then compare the candidate device’s input-voltage range, rectified output, continuous and thermal current limits, coil-power rating, switching behavior, approvals and compatibility with the exact brake. mayr specifically identifies switching voltage, power class, monitoring, feedback, approvals and brake compatibility as considerations when selecting supply modules. Use the module and brake instructions to confirm the final configuration. mayr supply and monitoring components
Bridge rectifier or half-wave rectifier?
Both are used in brake applications, but the appropriate choice depends on the brake and its approved circuit. Do not choose one based on a general rule or assume a rectifier is suitable merely because its input voltage appears to match. Confirm the permitted type and connection in the brake maker’s wiring diagram or with the manufacturer.

Ratings are also product-specific. mayr lists different maximum AC input voltages—230, 400, 500 or 600 VAC, depending on variant—and output-voltage ceilings that vary by variant and rectifier type. Its published output-current values range from 1.7 A to 4.0 A across the displayed variants, with limits dependent on type and ambient temperature. These are mayr product specifications, not general requirements for electromagnetic brakes; the company notes that final configured product properties can change. The coil itself is just as model-dependent. For example, Ogura’s holding-brake material says the brakes discussed there normally use 24 or 90 V DC coils. That is an example from Ogura’s products, not a universal voltage standard. Ogura holding-brake material

When is a brake-specific supply module useful?
A standard rectifier may not address an application’s release speed or holding-power needs. A purpose-designed module can provide functions such as an initial overexcitation phase followed by reduced voltage or power, if the brake is designed for that operating method.
mayr’s ROBA switch is one product-specific example: it changes from bridge to half-wave rectification after a brake-specific, adjustable time. Its listed input range is 100–500 VAC. Neither that range nor its switching behavior should be treated as a general limit or timing recipe for other brakes. Use the selected module’s instructions and the brake’s specifications to establish compatibility and settings. mayr ROBA switch

How do you check a candidate power supply?
- Identify the brake and coil. Use the exact model’s nameplate, wiring diagram and manufacturer documentation to establish coil type, rated voltage, current or power, and approved rectifier arrangement.
- Identify the source. Confirm its voltage and current type, and determine whether an existing controller or module already converts AC to the required DC.
- Match the electrical ratings. Verify that the rectifier or module accepts the source voltage and provides an output and current or power capacity permitted for the coil. Check temperature-related derating and the device’s continuous operating limits.
- Check the application functions. Confirm that its switching mode and any overexcitation, holding-power reduction, monitoring or feedback functions match the brake’s requirements.
- Verify the complete arrangement. Follow the wiring diagram and installation instructions for both the brake and supply. Confirm approvals and compatibility for the configured components; ask the manufacturer if the documentation does not resolve a mismatch.
What a rectifier does—and what it does not guarantee
Rectification makes AC power available as DC for a DC coil, when the selected device is designed for that brake and supply. mayr also says its own rectifiers limit voltage peaks when inductive loads are switched off, reducing contact load. That product function is not a blanket assurance that every rectifier provides all required switching protection. Use the protection circuit specified for the actual brake and controls. mayr brake rectifier specifications
