An eSignature API integration typically follows six steps: prepare a document or template, assign signers, create and send a signature request, let signers complete it remotely or inside your app, track status changes, and retrieve the signed document. The concepts are common across providers, but their authentication, endpoints, event handling, and account requirements differ. Build the workflow around your application’s needs, then isolate provider-specific details behind an adapter rather than treating different APIs as interchangeable.
Map the signing lifecycle before choosing endpoints
Start by defining the states and actions your product needs, independent of a vendor’s object names. A typical flow looks like this:

- Choose a document or template and populate any required fields.
- Identify signers, their roles, and any routing order.
- Create and send a signature request or equivalent provider object.
- Direct signers to a provider-hosted signing page or present an embedded experience.
- Receive status events and query the provider when you need to confirm current state.
- Retrieve the completed document and any available audit information.
DocuSign’s example creates an envelope from a template after obtaining an OAuth token; Adobe describes sending an agreement, checking its status, and downloading it; Dropbox Sign’s quickstart covers signature requests in both embedded and non-embedded flows. Use these as examples of the shared lifecycle, not as evidence that their object models or endpoints match. In your application, keep business concepts such as “request,” “recipient,” and “completed document” separate from vendor-specific payloads. A provider adapter can translate those concepts into the selected service’s requests and responses, which reduces the impact of provider-specific changes and makes your own workflow easier to test.

Choose authentication for the acting user and runtime
Authentication depends on who is acting, whether a user is present, and whether your application can safely protect credentials. A confidential application should keep client secrets on a trusted server, register redirect URLs carefully, and request only the permissions needed for the action. Do not expose confidential credentials in browser code or a distributed client.
DocuSign documents authorization-code grants for public and confidential clients as well as JWT grants, and directs developers to choose according to their scenario. Adobe’s quickstart uses OAuth authorization and scopes; requested scopes are constrained by what is enabled for the application and what the action requires. Dropbox Sign’s OAuth flow obtains a user’s consent and returns a bearer access token for calls made on that user’s behalf. These mechanisms serve different application and identity models, so select from the provider’s current documentation rather than assuming one grant is a drop-in choice for all three. Decide whether signing is hosted or embedded
With provider-hosted signing, the provider sends the signer to its own site, commonly through an email notification. In an embedded flow, the signer completes the experience within your application or an embedded frame. The choice affects product continuity and also who owns surrounding responsibilities.
- Provider-hosted: The provider’s site and commonly its email flow handle the signing experience. Confirm how notifications, return navigation, and branding fit your product.
- Embedded: The signer remains in your product experience, but your application may take on additional setup and notification work. Dropbox Sign specifically notes that its embedded flow puts user notifications and event handling on the developer.
Adobe documents embedded signing, and DocuSign’s developer center includes embedded-signing materials. Before committing, check the selected provider’s current setup or approval requirements, notification model, branding options, and security responsibilities. Synchronize status with events and API checks
Webhooks can tell your application promptly when a signing workflow changes; querying the provider’s API gives you a way to check current state when handling an event or reconciling a record. Adobe documents HTTPS event notifications, subscriptions, OAuth scopes, and retries when a listener does not meet delivery requirements. DocuSign Connect sends updates for configured envelope events and is presented as a way to avoid unnecessary polling. Dropbox Sign documents events and callbacks, with notification handling assigned to the developer for embedded flows.
Design your listener to tolerate repeated deliveries and to record event identifiers and processing outcomes where available. Acknowledge notifications according to the provider’s requirements, process state transitions safely, and reconcile important transitions against the provider’s API rather than assuming an event alone is a complete, permanent source of truth. These are implementation practices for reliable event-driven systems; delivery rules and available event details remain provider-specific. Test the whole workflow before production
A successful request-creation call is not enough to demonstrate that your integration handles a real signing lifecycle. Exercise the paths your product depends on, including:
- Requests with multiple recipients and any required routing order.
- Template data and signer roles, including incomplete or invalid input.
- Rejected, expired, and completed requests.
- Webhook verification, delivery failures, repeat events, and recovery.
- Retrieval of the completed document and any available audit information.
Adobe describes a Developer Edition for document exchange and workflow testing. Dropbox Sign says its documentation supports testing every endpoint and most features using test_mode. Before launch, verify the selected provider’s current production account, application approval, plan, and scope conditions: those operational requirements can change. Compare providers against your implementation needs
Evaluate the details that shape your architecture and operating process rather than looking for a universal “best” API. The provider documentation establishes these as useful comparison axes; it does not establish a complete current price comparison or a universally best provider.
