What Wireless High-Resolution Audio Means

Wireless high-resolution audio describes codec and device support for higher-resolution playback, but it does not automatically mean the signal is lossless. Learn how to read codec, certification, and compatibility claims.

Wireless high-resolution audio is audio sent wirelessly using a codec and compatible devices designed to support high-resolution playback. The label does not, by itself, mean the signal arrives bit-for-bit unchanged: high resolution describes audio format capabilities, while lossless describes whether decoding reproduces the original samples exactly.

What does “high resolution” mean?

High-resolution audio refers to audio formats with specifications beyond conventional CD audio, commonly described by bit depth and sample rate. A higher bit depth or sample rate indicates a format’s potential capabilities; it does not establish how faithfully a particular wireless connection transmits the audio.

In a 2024 request for information, the Bluetooth SIG listed 96 kHz and 24-bit support among desired capabilities for a high-resolution codec. The document describes requirements and evaluation criteria, not a finalized Bluetooth codec standard. The SIG’s separate lossless criteria focus on reproducing the input bit-for-bit and supporting at least 16-bit audio. Bluetooth SIG

High-resolution and lossless are different claims

A codec can support a high-resolution format without transmitting it losslessly. Conversely, a lossless claim describes exact sample reproduction, not necessarily a format beyond CD quality. The distinction matters because codec labels and specifications do not all promise the same thing.

How the main wireless codec claims differ

Codec or term What the source says What the claim does not establish
LDAC Sony says LDAC transmits three times more data than standard Bluetooth technology and identifies it as certified for the Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo. The data-rate comparison and certification do not, on their own, promise bit-perfect lossless transmission.
aptX HD Qualcomm specifies 24-bit audio, up to 48 kHz sampling, and 576 kbit/s at 48 kHz. Those specifications do not establish 96 kHz support or lossless transport.
aptX Lossless Qualcomm describes bit-exact CD-quality 16-bit/44.1 kHz transmission. Its Snapdragon Sound FAQ also describes up to 24-bit/48 kHz lossless audio when compatible devices and radio-frequency conditions allow it. The higher-resolution lossless operation is conditional; it is not guaranteed for every device or connection.
LC3 The Bluetooth SIG describes LC3 as LE Audio’s high-quality, low-power codec and says listening tests found it can outperform SBC at the same bit rate. The cited SIG FAQ does not claim LC3 has Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification.

Sony’s support FAQ, last modified in 2022, says standard Bluetooth does not meet Hi-Res specifications, while Sony separately describes LDAC as offering an enhanced wireless experience and identifies it as certified for the Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo. These statements concern different things: generic Bluetooth capability versus a particular codec and certification. Neither should be stretched into a claim that every Bluetooth connection is high-resolution or lossless. Sony support FAQ Sony Hi-Res Audio information

What the Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo tells you

The Japan Audio Society’s Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo is a certification used for wireless audio products and codecs. Sony identifies LDAC as certified for the logo. Treat certification as a specific claim about that program, not as a synonym for lossless transmission or a guarantee that every part of a listening chain uses the same codec. What to check on a phone, computer, or headphones

Wireless playback depends on the entire chain: the source must provide audio in a suitable quality, the transmitting device must support the codec, the receiving headphones or speaker must support it too, and the connection must negotiate that codec. A product listing that simply says “hi-res” is not enough to confirm compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact codec. Look for a specific name such as LDAC, aptX HD, or aptX Lossless rather than relying only on “hi-res” wording.
  2. Check both devices. Confirm that the exact source model and the exact headphone or speaker model support the same codec. Sony advises using compatible equipment for LDAC playback. Sony support FAQ
  3. Read the codec’s stated limits. Compare bit depth and sample rate, and distinguish a high-resolution format claim from a bit-exact lossless claim.
  4. Check the source quality. A wireless codec cannot turn a low-quality or lossy recording into the original high-resolution master. Sony says non-Hi-Res audio cannot simply be converted into Hi-Res audio. Sony support FAQ
  5. Allow for connection conditions. Qualcomm says aptX Lossless operation depends on compatible devices and suitable radio-frequency conditions, so the codec’s maximum capability may not be available in every environment. Qualcomm aptX information

How to interpret listening-test claims

Qualcomm’s aptX HD page reports a 2015 University of Salford test involving 24 participants. It says participants were unable to consistently detect a difference between 96 kHz/24-bit audio and 48 kHz/24-bit audio encoded and decoded with aptX HD. That is the reported result of one specific test, not proof that every listener, codec, recording, or listening setup will produce the same result. Qualcomm aptX HD information

Quick checklist for comparing products

  • Do the transmitting and receiving devices both support the same named codec?
  • If a Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo is shown, is the claim specifically about certification?
  • What bit depth and sample rate does the codec support?
  • Is the claim lossy high-resolution playback or bit-exact lossless operation?
  • Is the source recording or stream itself high quality?
  • Does the lossless claim depend on device compatibility or radio-frequency conditions?
