ESA’s Hera spacecraft is scheduled to rendezvous with the Didymos–Dimorphos binary asteroid system in November 2026. Hera will inspect the crater made when NASA’s DART spacecraft struck Dimorphos, measure how the moonlet changed, and collect the physical data needed to assess kinetic impact as a planetary-defense technique. As of 13 October 2026, Hera had not arrived: ESA had announced braking manoeuvres for 15 and 22 October, followed by three smaller transition burns later in the month.
What the Hera mission is going to do
Hera launched on 7 October 2024 and is traveling to a two-body system rather than a single isolated asteroid. Its primary target is Dimorphos, a small moonlet orbiting the larger near-Earth asteroid Didymos. ESA describes the mission as a detailed post-impact survey: the spacecraft will map the bodies, determine Dimorphos’s mass and altered orbit, and investigate the impact crater and its surrounding terrain.

The mission is the European contribution to the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment (AIDA). NASA’s DART supplied the controlled impact; Hera is the follow-up investigation that measures the result in detail. That distinction matters: DART performed the deflection experiment, while Hera is characterizing its physical outcome. The combined observations should improve models of momentum transfer and asteroid structure, but they do not establish that every asteroid would respond identically to an impact.

When will Hera reach Didymos?
ESA’s current mission listing and NASA/JPL’s small-body target table give November 2026 as the expected rendezvous month. A JAXA/ISAS project page still lists December 2026, so published schedules are not completely aligned. November is the current ESA/JPL schedule, not a guaranteed arrival date.

On 7 October 2026, ESA said Hera was preparing for its braking phase. The announced plan called for:
- BRM-1: the first braking manoeuvre on 15 October 2026.
- BRM-2: a second braking manoeuvre on 22 October 2026.
- Transition manoeuvres: three smaller burns planned toward the end of October.
These were planned operations as of 13 October, not completed events. ESA’s schedule could change if navigation, spacecraft performance or arrival conditions require an adjustment.
What happened when DART hit Dimorphos?
NASA’s DART spacecraft intentionally collided with Dimorphos on 26 September 2022. The impact measurably changed the moonlet’s orbit around Didymos. JAXA/ISAS reports that Dimorphos’s orbital period became approximately 32 minutes shorter.

That measured change shows that a kinetic impact can alter an asteroid moonlet’s motion. It does not by itself reveal how much of the result came from the spacecraft’s direct momentum versus material blasted off the surface, nor does it fully describe Dimorphos’s internal structure. Hera’s instruments are intended to resolve those uncertainties.
The binary asteroid pair
| Body | Role and estimated size | Orbital information |
|---|---|---|
| Didymos | The larger primary, approximately 780 metres across; a near-Earth binary asteroid. | Dimorphos orbits it. |
| Dimorphos | The smaller moonlet, approximately 150–151 metres across. | Before DART, its orbital period was 11 hours 55 minutes; the impact shortened that period by approximately 32 minutes, according to JAXA/ISAS. |
ESA’s September 2026 explainer places Dimorphos, on average, about 1.15 kilometres from Didymos and describes both bodies as relatively dark, silicon-rich rock. The post-impact surface is not yet fully known. DART likely reshaped Dimorphos and expelled debris, so Hera’s close observations will examine terrain that may differ substantially from pre-impact images.
What Hera and its CubeSats will measure
Hera orbiter
The main spacecraft will conduct mapping and navigation around the binary system, determine Dimorphos’s mass, refine its post-impact orbit and document the crater and nearby ejecta. Those measurements connect the observed orbital change to the impact’s momentum transfer and the target’s physical properties.

Juventas
ESA says the Juventas CubeSat is designed for internal radar sounding and gravity measurements. Radar can probe beneath the surface, while gravity observations help constrain the moonlet’s mass distribution and internal structure. Juventas also contributes to demonstrations of inter-satellite links and operations in an ultra-low-gravity environment.

Milani will analyze surface spectra and the surrounding dust. Spectral data can help identify surface composition, while dust measurements can reveal material released or redistributed by the collision. Together, the CubeSats provide closer and more specialized observations than the orbiter could make alone.

Why the approach manoeuvres matter
Hera’s March 2026 deep-space manoeuvre changed its velocity by 367 metres per second using 123 kilograms of hydrazine. ESA Flight Dynamics engineer Francesco Castellini described it as “the Hera mission’s largest manoeuvre in terms of fuel consumption,” adding that it was used to test systems needed for the braking and rendezvous manoeuvres later in the year. The October burns are therefore the next major navigation stage before the spacecraft begins operations at the binary system.

What scientists should learn from Hera
- How large and deep the DART crater is, and how much material surrounds it.
- How Dimorphos’s mass and internal structure affected the impact response.
- How much momentum was transferred through impact ejecta.
- Whether the moonlet’s shape, surface and orbit changed in ways that improve future impact simulations.
- How spacecraft and small probes can navigate and communicate in an ultra-low-gravity binary environment.
ESA summarizes the mission’s purpose this way: “Hera will perform a detailed post-impact survey of the target asteroid, Dimorphos – the orbiting moonlet of a binary asteroid system known as Didymos.” The survey will turn a headline-making collision into a better-calibrated physical experiment for planetary-defense planning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Hera deflect Dimorphos?
No. NASA’s DART spacecraft made the intentional impact in 2022. Hera is the European follow-up mission that will measure the crater, orbit, mass and surrounding debris.
Is Hera visiting one asteroid or two?
It is visiting the Didymos binary system: Dimorphos is the smaller moonlet, while Didymos is the larger primary it orbits.
Why do some pages say Hera will arrive in December 2026?
ESA and NASA/JPL currently list November 2026, while a JAXA/ISAS project page lists December. The difference reflects inconsistent partner-page schedules; November is the current ESA/JPL expectation.
