An Epic giveaway can add a game to your library for continued access after the promotion ends, provided you claim it during the offer window. Steam free-to-play games are free to download and play, while a free weekend is temporary. For library management, Steam documents tools such as collections, shelves, sorting, and hiding; Epic’s cited guidance focuses on claiming promotions and troubleshooting missing games.
What “free” means on each store

These categories are not interchangeable. A Steam free weekend is not a permanent claim, and a free-to-play game is not the same thing as a paid game temporarily unlocked. Likewise, claiming an Epic promotion grants a library license; it does not mean you own the game outright.

How to claim an Epic giveaway before it expires
Epic’s support guidance describes a weekly free game available for seven days, and says two-factor authentication is required to claim. The live schedule and requirements can change, so check the Epic Games Store Free Games page for the current title and deadline. Treat the offer’s displayed end time as the cutoff, not the general weekly cadence.
- Check the live offer. Open the Free Games page and confirm the game and the offer period shown for it.
- Sign in to the Epic account you intend to use. If two-factor authentication is not enabled, set it up before claiming; Epic currently lists it as a claim requirement.
- Complete the claim before the offer ends. Follow the game’s claim flow while it is still marked free. Merely seeing or downloading a promotion is not a substitute for completing the claim.
- Verify the library entry. After the claim, look for the game in your library under the same account.
If you missed the deadline, Epic’s support answer is straightforward: you cannot retroactively claim that expired giveaway for free. You can wait for a future promotion or obtain the game through another offer, but the expired free period does not remain open for late claims. See Epic’s support guidance on missed free games.

Organizing and finding games in your libraries
Steam: sort, hide, and build collections
Steam documents several ways to manage a large library: sort titles, hide games, feature selected games, and create shelves and collections. Collections and shelves are useful for grouping games by status, genre, or whatever system makes sense to you; hiding a game removes it from the ordinary library view without being the same as deleting its license. Epic: verify the account before assuming a game is gone
Epic identifies signing into the wrong account as a common reason that a library looks unfamiliar or a game seems missing. Check the account currently signed in before concluding that a claimed promotion disappeared. Epic’s “Games Are Missing from my Library” support page covers this issue.

Steam shortcuts do not add licenses
Steam lets you add a non-Steam game to the client as a shortcut, but that does not transfer the game into your Steam account. Steam states, “This will only add a shortcut to your game in the Steam client.” It does not provide Steam updates or establish that the account owns the game on Steam. What to check when a game appears missing
- Confirm the account. On Epic, make sure you are signed into the account used to claim the promotion.
- Check Steam’s visibility and organization. A title may be hidden, filtered out, or located in a collection or shelf rather than the view you are currently using.
- Distinguish a shortcut from a Steam game. A non-Steam shortcut is only a launcher entry; it will not appear as a Steam-owned license.
- Consider the access type. If the title was a Steam free weekend, access may simply have ended. A free weekend does not create a permanent library claim.
