Envision May End Operations Without a Partner; Product Development Could Stop at Year-End

Envision’s founders say product development could stop at the end of 2026 unless the assistive-technology company finds a partner. The future of app service and support remains unclear.

Envision has not announced a completed shutdown. The Netherlands-based assistive-technology company said it plans to stop product development at the end of 2026 and wind down operations unless it finds a partner. In a report published October 5, 2026, The National said the founders were discussing options with potential partners; it did not report a confirmed deal. For people who rely on Envision, the practical question—how long the app and other services will remain available—was still unanswered in that report.

What Envision announced

Founders Karthik Mahadevan and Karthik Kannan said the company had not achieved profitable results despite efforts to create a sustainable business. They described scaling its business model as difficult and said they were exploring a partner who could take the product or business in a new direction. Their announcement, as reported by The National, makes the year-end development halt conditional: Envision could continue with a partner, but the report did not name one or confirm an agreement.

The founders said they had given Envision their all and brought it as far as they could with their nimble efforts. They also said the product and business had potential, but that realizing it might require a new audience or business model. Those are the founders’ explanations, not an independently verified financial assessment.

What Envision makes

The phone app

Envision’s app uses a smartphone camera to identify and read material such as signs, menus, books, and objects, helping people with visual impairments access information around them. The National reported that the app began gaining popularity in 2017 and won a Google Play Award in the “best accessibility experience” category in 2019; that award detail was reported by the outlet and is not independently confirmed here.

The smart glasses

The glasses adapted app functions into a wearable format. Co-founder Karthik Kannan described using a phone while also handling a cane as cumbersome, and the glasses were intended to make access more convenient. The National reported that the glasses were introduced in 2020. It also cited a price range of $1,899 to $3,499, but did not establish that as a current price or specify when those prices applied. Current inventory, pricing, warranty, and support are not established by the report.

Will the app and glasses keep working?

The founders said they hoped to keep the app and some offerings operational for as long as possible, including offline. That is an expressed hope, not a service-continuity guarantee. The October 5 report did not specify how long the app would remain available, which functions might work offline, whether updates or support would continue, or what a future wind-down would mean for existing users.

It also does not establish whether a partner was found after the report, whether the planned wind-down will proceed, or the final date for development or operations. Users making decisions about relying on the app or buying glasses should check Envision’s current company communications for the latest availability and support information; the report alone cannot confirm either.

Why the founders said a partner matters

The founders framed the challenge as more than a question of product usefulness. They said that, although they viewed 300 million blind and low-vision people as a large potential market, many people face more immediate barriers such as poverty, limited basic access, and unemployment—problems technology cannot solve on its own. That figure and explanation are the founders’ framing as quoted by The National, not an independently validated market-size estimate. They also said even cheap or free products struggle to reach a million users, with paying users a much smaller group; those user-count claims are attributed to the founders and were not independently verified in the report.

Their comments help explain why a useful accessibility product may still struggle to become a sustainable business. They do not establish the size of Envision’s user base, the company’s finances, or the terms of any partner discussions.
