Mouser announced on October 5, 2026, that it is stocking NXP Semiconductors’ Ara240, a discrete neural processing unit (DNPU) designed to accelerate AI workloads in host-based and embedded systems. NXP lists up to 40 equivalent TOPS (eTOPS), support for up to 16GB of LPDDR4, Linux runtime support, and PCIe Gen4 x4 or USB 3.2 Gen 1 host connections. Those specifications describe an accelerator—not a standalone computer—and the listed performance is a vendor figure, not an independent benchmark.
What the Ara240 is—and what Mouser’s announcement means
NXP describes the Ara240 as a discrete AI accelerator for AI-enabled compute and embedded systems. It is intended to work alongside a host processor, offloading neural-network workloads rather than serving as a complete PC, robotics controller, or other standalone system. NXP’s Ara240 product page and DNPU overview describe that host-plus-accelerator role and point to the Ara SDK for deploying models to supported silicon and modules.

Mouser’s October 5, 2026 announcement says the distributor is stocking the Ara240 discrete unit and highlights industrial automation, autonomous robots, smart infrastructure, human-machine interfaces (HMIs), and edge applications. The notice identifies the part as ARA-2120AA-IA0T-B. Stock and regional availability can change, so check the current listing with the distributor before planning a purchase.
Specifications and what they do—and do not—tell you
| Specification | What is established | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| AI performance | Up to 40 eTOPS, according to NXP’s 2026 product page | NXP expands eTOPS as “equivalent TOPS.” It is a vendor-stated peak figure; it is not enough on its own to compare the Ara240 with another accelerator. Precision, workload, and measurement conditions matter. |
| Memory | Up to 16GB LPDDR4, according to NXP’s 2026 product page | “Up to” describes a maximum, not necessarily the configuration of every product or module. Check the applicable part and current datasheet for design details. |
| Host connections | PCIe Gen4 x4 or USB 3.2 Gen 1, listed by NXP | These are host interfaces; confirm that the chosen board or system supports the interface and implementation your design requires. |
| Runtime and frameworks | Linux runtime; TensorFlow, PyTorch, and ONNX listed by NXP | Framework support does not establish that every model runs unchanged. Model conversion, deployment requirements, and optimization may apply. |
| Security features | Secure boot and a root-of-trust processor, listed by NXP | Review NXP’s current technical documentation to determine how these features fit a system’s security architecture. |
NXP’s commercial Ara240 datasheet, Rev. 2.0 dated April 2, 2026, reports typical power of 6–8 W and idle power of 2 W. Those are commercial-grade figures from that revision, not guarantees for every workload or configuration. NXP’s product page lists a newer datasheet revision, Rev. 3.0 dated July 3, 2026; designers should consult the applicable current document before relying on power or electrical specifications. The same Rev. 2.0 excerpt gives a 0°C to 85°C junction-temperature range for the commercial grade only. Do not apply that range to an industrial-grade variant.

Workloads and applications NXP and Mouser identify
NXP names CNNs, transformer models, large language models (LLMs), vision-language models (VLMs), and vision-language-action models among the workloads the Ara240 targets. Its commercial datasheet excerpt also lists use cases including latent diffusion, mixture-of-experts models, vision transformers, facial detection and recognition, object detection and tracking, activity recognition, segmentation, pose estimation, and speech recognition.
Mouser emphasizes industrial automation, autonomous robots, smart infrastructure, HMI platforms, and edge applications. These are vendor-described target uses, not evidence of independent benchmark results or confirmation that every model can be deployed without conversion, tuning, or other optimization. A system designer should verify the specific model, runtime, and host configuration against NXP’s documentation.

Software, modules, and evaluation
NXP lists Linux runtime support and TensorFlow, PyTorch, and ONNX framework support for the Ara240. The Ara SDK is the relevant software path for model deployment, while the product page also identifies an Ara240 16GB M.2 module as a concrete hardware option. Confirm the exact module configuration, compatible host, and current documentation before selecting evaluation or production hardware.

For procurement, check current authorized-distributor listings. NXP also describes a product-longevity program in which participating products are available for at least 10 years, and designated automotive, telecom, and medical products for at least 15 years. That program statement should not be taken as confirmation that Ara240 is a participating or designated product unless NXP’s product-specific status says so.

What to check before choosing the Ara240
- Workload fit: identify the models and tasks to run, then confirm their deployment path and any conversion or optimization requirements.
- Comparable performance: treat 40 eTOPS as NXP’s stated maximum, not a direct substitute for workload-specific testing or a like-for-like comparison with other accelerators.
- Memory and power: verify the exact configuration and consult the current datasheet revision for electrical and thermal design.
- Host compatibility: check PCIe Gen4 x4 or USB 3.2 Gen 1 support, Linux integration, and the selected board or module’s requirements.
- Operating conditions: confirm the grade and applicable temperature range; the cited 0°C to 85°C junction range is for commercial grade in the April 2026 Rev. 2.0 datasheet excerpt.
- Availability: verify the current part or module listing and regional stock with the relevant supplier.
