Then choose the right method: use built-in Remote Desktop for recurring access to an eligible PC, or an attended support tool when someone is present to approve help. Turning on Remote Desktop alone does not make a computer reachable over the public internet.
First, identify the host and the client
The host is the computer you want to access; the client is the device you use to connect. The host’s Windows edition determines whether it can accept incoming connections through Windows’ built-in Remote Desktop. Windows Home can connect to another PC as a client, but it cannot host a built-in Remote Desktop session.

For help with a person who is at the computer and can approve the session, use an attended support option such as Quick Assist. For a Mac, Windows, or Linux host, Chrome Remote Desktop is another option. These tools have different consent and setup flows; choose based on the host’s operating system and whether access needs to be attended or recurring.
Enable built-in Remote Desktop on Windows
Check the host’s edition
On the computer to be accessed, open Start > Settings > System > About and check Windows specifications for the edition. Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education, and Windows Server editions can host built-in Remote Desktop connections. Windows Home cannot. Turn on access and note the PC name
- On the host, open Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- Switch Enable Remote Desktop to On and confirm the prompt.
- Record the PC name shown on the Remote Desktop settings page. The client will need this name or the host’s IP address.
- If someone other than an administrator needs to connect, use the user-selection control in Remote Desktop settings to add the account. Administrators and users specifically permitted there can connect.
Connect from another device
On another Windows PC, open Remote Desktop Connection, enter the host PC name or IP address, select Connect, and sign in with an account permitted on the host. For other client platforms, Microsoft documents Windows App for macOS and iOS, and the Remote Desktop app for Android; app names and availability can change, so check Microsoft’s current client instructions and official app listings.
Make sure the host is reachable
The Remote Desktop switch is only one requirement. A connection also depends on the host being powered on and connected, the account being allowed, a network route from client to host, and the host firewall allowing Remote Desktop. If any of these conditions is missing, the client may not be able to connect even when the feature is enabled.

When the host is outside your local network, a route into the destination network is needed. Microsoft identifies a VPN or port forwarding as possible approaches, but the right configuration depends on the router, firewall, VPN endpoint, and network policy. A consumer VPN subscription by itself does not configure a path to your particular home or office computer. For a work or school PC, ask the network administrator rather than changing managed settings. See Microsoft’s guidance on enabling and accessing Remote Desktop.

Quick Assist for attended help
Quick Assist is designed for a person-to-person support session, not unattended access to your own PC. The helper shares a code, and the person at the host must approve screen sharing; a separate approval is needed before the helper can control the computer. Use it only with someone you trust. Microsoft says it will not initiate unsolicited requests for device access; if an unexpected caller, email, or message asks you to open a support session, stop and verify the request independently. Chrome Remote Desktop for cross-platform access
Google’s setup distinguishes persistent remote access, which is configured on the host and protected with a PIN, from one-time support using a code. This can suit a host that is not an eligible Windows edition or a setup involving different operating systems. Follow Google’s current Chrome Remote Desktop setup instructions for the host and client steps.
Secure remote access before using it
- Use trusted networks. Microsoft advises: “Only enable Remote Desktop on trusted networks, such as your home network, and avoid enabling it on devices that require strict access controls.”
- Keep Network Level Authentication (NLA) enabled where possible. NLA requires authentication before a remote session is established and is recommended by Microsoft for most environments. If an older client does not support it, treat any compatibility change cautiously and restore NLA when possible.
- Limit accounts and protect them. Permit only intended users and use strong, unique passwords for accounts with remote access.
- Turn off access when it is no longer needed. This reduces the time the host is available for remote connections.
- Follow organizational controls. A managed work or school device may have stricter access rules than a personal PC.

Windows version and client availability
Remote access capability and operating-system support are separate issues. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A PC may still have Remote Desktop settings, but that does not change the operating system’s support status. Check Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice and the current client app listings before planning a setup.
