If Netflix looks blurry, pixelated, or softer than expected, first check whether it happens on one title or everything. Then work through the title and plan, connection, playback settings, and device-to-screen setup—in that order. Netflix adjusts streaming quality to the connection, so a stream may start at lower resolution and improve after playback begins.
First, identify what kind of picture problem you have
This guide is for a picture that looks blurry, low quality, or pixelated. A distorted image, glitches, skipping, or stuttering can point to a device or video-cable problem instead; Netflix provides a separate troubleshooting flow for those symptoms.

Does it affect one title or every title?
- If only one show or movie looks wrong, check another title. If the issue stays confined to that title, report it from your Viewing Activity.
- If several titles have the same problem, continue with the checks below.
Confirm the title and plan can play at the quality you expect
Open the title’s details on the device you are using and look for its available quality labels, such as HD, 4K, 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, or HDR. A label indicates what may be available on that device; it does not guarantee the stream is currently playing at that quality. Your Netflix plan and the device must also support the desired resolution.
On some phones, HDR playback may not be available even when a title has an HDR label—for example, if low-power mode is enabled or the phone is using cellular data. Netflix’s video-quality guidance explains the supported quality labels and device considerations.

Check the connection Netflix actually receives
Netflix recommends a stable connection at or above these speeds. They are recommendations, not a promise that every title will stream at the matching resolution.
| Target resolution | Netflix recommended stable speed |
|---|---|
| 720p HD | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p Full HD | 5 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | 15 Mbps |
On a computer or mobile device, open Fast.com to check speed. On a TV-connected device, use Netflix’s in-app Check your Network flow. If the measured speed is below the recommendation for your target, Netflix advises contacting your internet service provider. Use wired internet or Wi-Fi when available.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
An advertised broadband maximum is not the same as the speed available to Netflix during playback. Traffic travels over the service, your internet provider’s network, and your home connection; congestion anywhere along that route can affect picture quality. Weak Wi-Fi and other people or devices using the connection at the same time can also reduce stability. Netflix explains this in its streaming connection overview.

Set the profile’s playback quality
- In a browser, open Account.
- Choose the profile you watch with.
- Open Playback Settings and check the data usage or video-quality setting.
Netflix lists High or Auto for 1080p and 4K, and Medium, High, or Auto for 720p. These settings are per profile. An explicit setting may help on a variable connection, but can cause buffering or freezing; if that happens, return to Auto. Follow the current Playback Settings instructions if the labels or account layout differ.

Check data use before choosing maximum quality
Netflix’s account data-use estimates are up to 0.3 GB per hour on Low, up to 0.7 GB per hour on Medium, and, on High, up to 1 GB per hour for SD, 3 GB per hour for HD, or 7 GB per hour for UHD. Auto adjusts to the connection. These are Netflix estimates, not fixed consumption rates; actual use can vary.
Adjust cellular playback on a phone or tablet
- Open the Netflix app and go to App Settings.
- Select Cellular Data Usage.
- Choose the setting that fits your data plan: Automatic, Wi-Fi Only, Save Data, or Maximum Data.
Maximum Data selects the highest quality available for the device and title. Netflix says it can use 1 GB per 20 minutes or more. An account-level data setting can also restrict mobile playback, so check that as well if the app setting does not change quality. See Netflix’s data-use guidance for current steps and estimates.

Check the device, browser, and external display chain
Streaming quality is limited by the weakest supported part of the playback chain. A 4K-capable TV alone is not enough if the streaming device, receiver, display settings, software, port, or cable cannot pass the target quality. Update device software or firmware, and confirm its video-output resolution is set appropriately.
For 4K/HDR, Netflix specifies an HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later. For Premium-plan quality it specifies a Premium High Speed HDMI cable or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. These are conditional checks for an external 4K/HDR chain—not general fixes for blur caused by a slow or unstable connection. Check every component between the streaming device and screen, including an audio receiver.

On a computer, check browser-specific limits
Supported resolution varies by operating system, browser, app, and hardware. Netflix’s Windows guidance lists Microsoft Edge and the Netflix Windows app for up to 4K on supported systems, and Firefox and Opera for up to Full HD. Those limits should not be generalized to other operating systems or configurations. Check Netflix’s current computer browser and system requirements for your setup.
If you are watching a download
On Android, iPhone, and iPad, Netflix offers Standard and High or Higher download quality. Standard uses less storage and plays in SD. High/Higher takes longer to download, uses more storage, and can play up to 1080p when the device and title support HD. Check the download-quality option in the app if only offline playback looks soft; see Netflix’s download-quality instructions.
When the picture still looks poor
Change one setting at a time, then replay the same scene or title so you can tell whether the change helped. If connection measurements meet the recommendation but several titles remain poor, verify the plan and device chain against Netflix’s supported setup. For unresolved quality problems, Netflix advises contacting the device manufacturer after checking that setup. Avoid a factory reset as an early troubleshooting step: some device procedures can remove apps, data, or settings.
