1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a Windows user who wants to import and organize a large ROM library with less manual setup, LaunchBox is the stronger fit. Its documented workflow covers importing, metadata and artwork, filtering, and correcting mismatched entries. The original EmulationStation is a better fit if you prioritize an open-source, themeable, controller-friendly interface and are comfortable configuring systems and emulator launch commands—or use a distribution that has done much of that setup for you.
What these front ends do—and which versions this comparison covers
LaunchBox is a Windows game library manager and launcher, not an emulator. It organizes entries for games and applications, connecting each entry to its files or storefront, platform, emulator or launcher, metadata, artwork, and settings. Original game files generally remain where they are unless you choose to copy or move them during import. Some supported workflows can help download or configure emulators, but LaunchBox does not include every emulator or supply games, ROMs, BIOS files, or firmware. LaunchBox help

EmulationStation is a graphical frontend: it presents a browsable game collection and launches games through separately configured emulators. This article refers specifically to the original EmulationStation project, whose site says it was last updated in 2015. Its setup guide should not be assumed to describe newer forks or every bundled distribution.

How much work does importing and setup take?
LaunchBox: guided import, followed by library cleanup
LaunchBox’s Windows help describes automated ROM import as well as single-platform and multi-platform import options. Its broader library tools include editing metadata, managing file paths, and addressing wrong matches or duplicates. That makes it a practical choice if you want to bring a large collection into a managed library rather than manually define every system’s launch behavior. The exact steps and supported emulator integrations depend on the platform and workflow; the documentation does not mean every emulator will be configured automatically. Imported entries do not necessarily mean the files themselves have been moved. LaunchBox says original files stay in their existing locations unless you elect to copy or move them during import. Decide on a stable folder layout before importing if you expect to reorganize storage later, and use the file-path management guidance if a collection moves. LaunchBox help
EmulationStation: explicit system definitions
The original EmulationStation setup guide has the user define systems in es_systems.cfg. A definition can include the system name, ROM folder, accepted file extensions, launch command, scraper platform identifier, and theme name. The guide describes substitutions including %ROM%, %BASENAME%, and %ROM_RAW% so a command can pass the selected game to an emulator. This direct control can be useful, but it means the user—or a preconfigured distribution—must supply the system and launch configuration. Original setup guide

The original project’s statement that RetroPie came preconfigured with emulators for “over 30 different platforms” is a claim on a site that identifies itself as last updated in 2015, not a current verified platform count. It describes RetroPie, not standalone EmulationStation, and does not mean the frontend itself includes emulators. Original project site

Its about page lists sortable fields including genre, platform, ESRB rating, developer, publisher, and custom fields. Original EmulationStation also describes scraping rich game details and artwork, then presenting the collection through themes. Its setup guide includes a scraper platform identifier within each system definition. The original EmulationStation is itself designed as a graphical, controller-usable frontend, with themes for changing its presentation. It may therefore suit a couch or cabinet setup without introducing a separate browsing interface, but the emulator launch configuration still has to be in place unless a distribution provides it.
