If a data breach may have exposed your personal information, freeze your credit separately at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You can also place a free fraud alert by contacting just one of them; it must notify the other two. A freeze restricts access to your credit report for new-credit decisions, while an alert asks businesses to verify your identity but does not block access. Neither stops every kind of fraud.
What to do after a data breach
- Read the breach notice. Follow any breach-specific steps and visit the FTC’s What To Do After a Data Breach resource. If the organization offers free credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance, the FTC recommends taking advantage of it; a paid service is not required to freeze your credit or place an alert.
- Freeze your credit with all three nationwide bureaus. Each bureau maintains a separate credit report, so a freeze at one does not freeze the others. Freezes are free, do not affect your credit score, and remain in place until you lift them. The FTC explains the options in Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts.
- Consider adding a fraud alert. An initial alert is free and can be requested from any one of the three bureaus. That bureau must notify the other two. You can have an initial fraud alert and a freeze at the same time.
- Check your reports and existing accounts. Look for credit accounts or activity you do not recognize, and review bank, credit-card, and insurance statements.
- Report suspected identity theft. If you find signs that someone has used your information, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan.

How to place a freeze with each bureau
Use the bureaus’ official freeze pages or phone routes listed by the FTC. The agency’s Understanding Your Credit guidance says online or telephone freeze requests must be placed within one business day. A mailed request must be processed within three business days.

How to lift a freeze when you apply for credit
A freeze can make a new-credit application harder to approve until the lender can access the relevant report. Before applying, ask the lender which bureau it will check. Then lift the freeze with that bureau for the period you need and re-freeze the report afterward. The FTC says online or telephone lift requests must be completed within one hour; mail requests have a three-business-day processing deadline.
A freeze does not stop you from using credit cards or other existing credit accounts. It also does not prevent misuse of those accounts, so keep reviewing their transactions and statements.

When an extended fraud alert may apply
If identity theft has actually occurred, you may be eligible for a free extended fraud alert after filing an identity-theft report with the FTC or a police report. Contact any one of the three bureaus to request it; that bureau must notify the other two. The alert lasts seven years. The FTC’s Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts page describes the requirements.

What freezes and alerts cannot do
Neither measure prevents every kind of fraud. A freeze is aimed at new-credit decisions, and an alert asks businesses to take extra steps when new credit is requested. Neither shuts down existing bank or card accounts, blocks every misuse of personal information, or replaces reviewing your reports and statements.
