To look up an email address, search the full address in quotation marks, inspect the original page behind any result, and verify an unfamiliar message through an independent official channel. A web match can reveal a public association; it cannot prove who sent a particular email or controls an account.
How to look up an email address
- Search the exact address. Enter the complete email address in quotation marks in a search engine. Review any public business pages, directories, or social profiles that appear.
- Check the original source. Open the page containing the address, review its context and date, and confirm that the address is actually associated with the person or organization named. A copied listing, old page, or search snippet alone is not reliable identification.
- Keep the result in perspective. An address found online may indicate a public association, but it does not establish who composed or sent a message. Google’s Results about you feature is for monitoring and requesting removal of your own qualifying personal details from Search, not for identifying other email users.
How to check whether an email is legitimate
Inspect the sender and authentication details
Compare the display name with the full sender address rather than relying on the name shown in the inbox. If your mail app exposes authentication information, review it as an additional signal. Google recommends checking these details when assessing suspicious messages in its guidance on avoiding and reporting phishing emails. No single lookup result or visible name is proof of identity.

Handle links and requests carefully
- Be cautious with unexpected links and messages asking for passwords, financial details, or other private information.
- Do not enter private information through a link in a suspicious message. Instead, go directly to the website you intended to visit by entering its known address or using a saved bookmark.
- If a message claims to be from a company, bank, employer, or public agency, contact it through an established website or contact channel. Do not rely on contact details in the message or simply reply to it.
These checks reduce reliance on the address and links being investigated; they do not guarantee that a message is genuine.

What people-search sites can and cannot tell you
People-search sites may combine data from brokers, public social profiles, and public records. Their reports can expose extensive personal information, so handle them carefully. A listing can be a lead about information associated with someone, but it does not prove that person authored a specific email. The Federal Trade Commission explains how these sites collect and sell information in its consumer guidance on people-search sites.

How to remove your own email from search results
Google’s Results about you tool lets eligible users monitor personal contact information, including email addresses, in Google Search and request removal of qualifying results. Availability and approval can vary, and Google may deny a request in some cases. Removing a result from Search is not the same as deleting the information from the website that published it; contact the source site separately if you want the page itself changed.

Broker opt-outs are separate from Google Search removal. The FTC describes a do-it-yourself process: find people-search sites listing your information, locate each site’s opt-out instructions, submit requests, and repeat the process as needed. Opting out does not erase underlying public records, and information may reappear.

DIY or paid opt-out help?
A paid service is optional. Before paying, ask how many sites it covers, whether it provides reports showing which sites were contacted and the outcomes, whether it rescans for new or returning listings, and what identity information it requires. These factors help clarify the service’s scope; neither a service nor an opt-out request can remove the underlying public records.
