What StayPresent does
The official StayPresent repository describes a Python utility that runs a web server alongside an application. It monitors processes, can restart crashed workers, and can detect a process that has stopped responding when the application sends heartbeats. Its built-in /status dashboard reports uptime, restart counts, service states, and recent incidents.

Why it can be free
The explanation in the title-specific DEV Community article is that StayPresent is a self-hosted Python package: users provide the deployment infrastructure and run the process supervision and status page themselves. That model avoids the publisher having to provide a hosted service whose infrastructure costs scale with customers’ use.

This is the author’s economic explanation, not an independently verified account of the publisher’s costs or finances. The project materials establish the package and its deployment approach; they do not establish what maintainers will charge, license, or distribute in the future.
What “free” means for your deployment
- You install and operate it. The package runs in your own deployment, so you remain responsible for the environment and for keeping the application and monitoring process running.
- Hosting is a separate question. The repository names Render, Railway, Koyeb, and Heroku as examples of hosts that expect an application to expose an HTTP port. Those examples do not mean StayPresent requires a particular provider, nor do they establish that any provider’s plan is free.
- The package license is permissive for the listed release. PyPI lists StayPresent 1.7.0 under the MIT License and requires Python 3.8 or later. PyPI gives that release date as September 11, 2026; release and package details can change, so check the current PyPI project entry before installing.
What the privacy claims establish
The article says StayPresent needs no account or third-party API key and does not phone home. Treat those as claims made by that article, rather than as independently verified guarantees. The repository documents the software and an optional self-ping feature, but those facts alone do not establish that every configuration makes no external requests or handles no user data. If that matters for your deployment, inspect the current source code and the configuration you intend to run.

What you need to run it
StayPresent is installed as a Python package. The repository documents installation with pip and recommends the optional prod extra to use Waitress instead of Flask’s development server. PyPI’s metadata for version 1.7.0 specifies Python 3.8 or later and lists that extra. Consult the repository’s current installation instructions and PyPI metadata for exact commands and release-specific requirements.
Its usefulness depends on the application and deployment: heartbeat-based hang detection requires the application to send heartbeats, while the status dashboard and HTTP server need to run in the deployment where you want to monitor processes. Self-hosting removes the need for a hosted monitoring account, but it does not remove the work of operating the software.

Is “free forever” guaranteed?
No future pricing or availability promise is established by the repository or the package listing. The self-hosted library model makes a free distribution plausible, as the article argues, but maintainers can change licensing, support, or distribution. Treat “free” as a description of the documented package model and release, not a binding commitment about every future version.
