These dates describe different things: September 15 was the board’s declaration date; September 24 was the date associated with shareholders of record and the date shown in the split-history listing. Lilly’s stock-split history and its 1997 annual report provide the company’s records.

A 2-for-1 split doubles the number of shares subject to the split. Lilly’s annual report says that outstanding and weighted-average share counts, along with per-share data, were adjusted for the split in all periods presented. It also specifies that treasury shares held by Lilly were not split, so the treatment should not be generalized to every share the company held.

Does the 1997 record mean Lilly will split its stock again?
No. The historical record establishes the date and ratio of Lilly’s last listed split, not whether management has announced or is considering another one. Lilly’s investor relations history lists no later split, but that record does not establish a future plan or explain the company’s present reasoning.
