Bitcoin can lose value sharply, and buying it directly is not the same as buying a Bitcoin exchange-traded product or futures fund. Before investing, understand how much you could lose, who controls any private keys, what charges apply, and how you will keep records for U.S. taxes.
Is Bitcoin too volatile to invest in?
There is no universal volatility threshold that makes Bitcoin suitable or unsuitable for everyone. The practical question is whether you can tolerate a substantial loss without jeopardizing essential spending or derailing your broader financial plan. Bitcoin is a highly speculative investment: its price can move widely, and you could lose money.

The SEC and CFTC investor bulletin characterizes Bitcoin, including exposure through Bitcoin futures, as highly speculative. The SEC’s September 9, 2024 investor bulletin on spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded products (ETPs) says: “Investors should understand that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative.” It also warns that investors may suffer financial loss and that speculation can heighten volatility. The SEC and CFTC further warn about the lack of regulation and potential for fraud or manipulation in the underlying Bitcoin market.

- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.

Questions to ask before investing
- Could you afford to lose the amount you plan to invest?
- Would a sharp drop cause you to sell impulsively or miss necessary expenses?
- Does this exposure fit your overall investment plan, rather than replacing a diversified approach?
- Do you understand the route you are buying: Bitcoin itself, an ETP share, or a futures fund?
Past price moves do not tell you what future moves will be, and a product that tracks Bitcoin imperfectly can add risks beyond Bitcoin’s own price changes. This is general information, not individualized investment advice.
What are the different ways to invest in Bitcoin?
Retail investors may buy Bitcoin directly, buy shares of a spot Bitcoin ETP, or obtain exposure through a Bitcoin futures fund. These routes differ in what the investor owns, who handles keys, how closely returns may follow Bitcoin’s spot price, and which fees and risks apply.
| Route | What you hold | Key control and handling | Important costs or tracking considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Bitcoin | Bitcoin held through a wallet or a custodian acting for you. | With self-custody, you control the private keys. With a custodian, the provider controls them on your behalf. | Trading, transfer, withdrawal, custody, or account charges may apply. There is no ETP sponsor fee, but that does not make direct ownership cost-free. |
| Spot Bitcoin ETP | Shares in an exchange-traded commodity trust that holds Bitcoin; you own shares, not the underlying Bitcoin directly. | The trust holds Bitcoin, so shareholders generally do not handle wallet keys themselves. | A sponsor fee reduces the Bitcoin represented by shares over time. Share prices can diverge from Bitcoin, and the product has market, sponsor, and structural risks. |
| Bitcoin futures fund | An interest in a fund that holds Bitcoin futures exposure, not direct Bitcoin. | The fund handles its futures positions; the investor does not manage Bitcoin private keys for that exposure. | Futures prices can differ from spot Bitcoin. Contracts expire and the fund rolls positions, so returns may not match Bitcoin’s spot-price change. |
The table is a high-level distinction, not a guarantee about every product or provider. Read the relevant offering documents and account terms to identify the actual structure, safeguards, fees, and tax documents for the product you are considering.
What a spot Bitcoin ETP does—and does not—provide
Spot Bitcoin ETPs seek to provide exchange-traded exposure without requiring each shareholder to set up a Bitcoin wallet or protect private keys. The SEC’s September 2024 bulletin explains that these products register their offerings and securities under federal securities laws, but are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940. They therefore do not carry that act’s investment-company valuation and custody requirements.
Owning an ETP share is not the same as holding Bitcoin in a wallet. A share’s market price may diverge from Bitcoin because of demand, issuer issues, or market events. The product also depends on its sponsor and on the operation of the underlying spot Bitcoin platforms, where the SEC has warned of elevated fraud and manipulation risk. Do not assume that every product marketed as an ETF has the same legal structure or investor protections.

Why futures returns can differ from Bitcoin
A futures fund can rise or fall differently from the spot price. Futures prices may not match the current spot price, and futures contracts expire. A fund that maintains exposure rolls from expiring contracts into later ones; those price differences can affect returns. A rise in Bitcoin therefore need not produce a similar increase in a futures fund.
Should I keep Bitcoin in an exchange or my own wallet?
The choice is between taking responsibility for private-key security yourself and delegating key control to a third party, such as an exchange or specialist custodian. Neither approach removes risk. Self-custody gives you control but makes you responsible for setup, backups, and recovery. Third-party custody can reduce the personal key-management burden, but adds dependence on the provider and its safeguards.

It manages the private keys or passcodes used to access it and authorize transactions. If you lose a private key and cannot recover it, you may permanently lose access to the Bitcoin.
What self-custody requires
Self-custody means you control the keys and bear responsibility for protecting them. Many wallets create a seed phrase that can restore access after a device, key, or software problem. The SEC advises storing that recovery information securely and never sharing it. Someone who obtains the phrase may be able to access the wallet; losing it can leave you without a recovery route.
Wallets can be hot or cold. A hot wallet is connected to the internet, which can make transactions convenient but increases exposure to cyberthreats. A cold wallet is typically offline and may reduce those online threats, but a physical device can still be lost, damaged, or stolen. A Bitcoin-compatible hardware wallet is one optional way to store keys offline; it does not eliminate the need to protect recovery information or to plan for loss or damage.

Before choosing self-custody, consider whether you can reliably set up and maintain the wallet, secure its backups, and handle the consequences of an irreversible mistake. The value of having direct control depends on whether you can manage those responsibilities in practice.
What to check with an exchange or custodian
When a provider controls keys for you, review how it safeguards assets and what happens if it fails, closes, is hacked, or enters bankruptcy. Investigate its background, privacy practices, fees, and whether it may rehypothecate or commingle customer assets. Those terms can affect what happens to assets and access in a provider failure; do not infer protections from the fact that an account is easy to open or use.
Convenience is not the same as a guarantee of access or recovery. Read the provider’s custody terms and understand what the account statements show about your holdings. If you use self-custody, keep records of transactions as well as recovery information: a wallet is not a substitute for tax records.
What fees do I pay to buy or hold Bitcoin?
There is no single standard fee for buying or holding Bitcoin. Charges depend on the platform, custodian, transaction, and product. Current platform rates and ETP sponsor-fee figures are not established here, so check the current fee schedule and the disclosures shown before confirming a transaction rather than relying on an old quote or advertised rate.

Also review the trading platform’s current spread and any separate buy or sell charges. Before withdrawing Bitcoin, look for withdrawal or network charges disclosed at the point of confirmation. A low headline trading charge does not establish the total cost if other charges apply.
Spot ETP sponsor fees
Spot Bitcoin ETPs generally charge a sponsor fee that a direct Bitcoin holder does not pay. The fee reduces the amount of Bitcoin represented by each share over time. Check the product’s current prospectus and periodic reports for its exact fee and other material terms; rates can change, and a remembered or promotional figure may not reflect the current disclosure.
Compare costs in context: direct ownership may involve platform, transfer, or custody charges, while an ETP has a sponsor fee and may have other trading costs. A fee comparison alone does not settle which route is preferable; key control, product structure, price tracking, and counterparty risks also differ.

For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS generally treats income from a digital asset held for personal or investment purposes as capital gain or loss when the asset is sold or otherwise disposed of. Merely continuing to hold Bitcoin is different from selling or disposing of it. The tax result depends on transaction details and taxpayer circumstances, so this is not a determination of an individual’s tax liability.

Why basis and transaction records matter
Basis is generally the cost of the asset in U.S. dollars. Working it out may require identifying which asset was acquired, the acquisition date and time, the number of units, and the fair market value when acquired. To calculate gain or loss, you also need reliable disposition information, including what was disposed of and the proceeds or value relevant to that transaction.
Keep complete records of acquisitions, dispositions, and basis information even if a platform provides an annual statement or tax form. Statements from a custodian or product may not capture every fact needed for your return, particularly when activity spans providers or involves self-custody. Use current IRS instructions or consult a qualified tax professional for guidance on your specific transactions.
What is Form 1099-DA?
Form 1099-DA is an IRS information-reporting form for digital-asset transactions reported by brokers. Its rollout is phased, and the applicable reporting depends on the transaction and broker. The form does not itself calculate every taxpayer’s gain or loss, and receiving one does not remove the need to keep your own complete records.
| Reporting phase | IRS timing described | What to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Gross proceeds | Covered transactions on or after January 1, 2025 | Brokers report gross proceeds for covered transactions from this date. |
| Basis | Certain transactions on or after January 1, 2026 | Basis reporting applies to certain transactions from this date; it is not a statement that every transaction will have basis reported. |
The IRS describes transition relief and exceptions for some transactions. Do not assume that every transaction, platform, or intermediary will produce an identical form, or that a form will include complete basis information for every asset. Compare any form you receive with your own acquisition, disposition, and basis records, and follow current IRS instructions for the relevant tax year. These are U.S. federal tax basics; tax treatment outside the United States is not covered here.
