Electric Lawn Mower Downsides: Five Trade-Offs to Know Before You Buy

Electric lawn mowers eliminate gasoline, oil changes, exhaust and much of the engine maintenance, but they do not eliminate compromises. The main disadvantages are finite battery runtime, charging delays, a higher purchase price, potentially expensive proprietary batteries, performance that varies by model and grass conditions, and battery-storage and disposal requirements.

For a small, relatively level lawn, those trade-offs may be easy to manage. For a large, rough or infrequently maintained yard, they can change which type of mower is practical. The key is to match the mower, battery capacity and charging routine to your actual mowing conditions rather than assume that every electric model performs the same.

1. A battery can run out before the lawn is finished

Cordless electric mowers are limited by the energy stored in their battery. In Consumer Reports’ 2026 expert testing, battery walk-behind mowers averaged about 45–50 minutes per charge. That is a test average, not a guarantee for every model or lawn.

Runtime changes with battery size, grass height and moisture, cutting width, mowing speed, terrain and whether the mower’s self-propelled drive is engaged. Self-propelled models use some of the battery’s charge to move the wheels, so driving up slopes or through rough ground can shorten the time available for cutting. Wet or overgrown grass also makes the blade work harder.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What that means for yard size

Consumer Reports’ buying guidance places battery walk-behind mowers mainly with yards of about one-third of an acre or less. A tidy, flat yard may take less energy than that benchmark suggests, while a hilly or neglected lawn may take more. Acreage alone is therefore a poor guarantee of runtime.

When the battery is depleted, you must either install a charged spare or stop and recharge. A second battery can keep a session moving, but it adds a substantial purchase cost and only helps if it is compatible with the mower’s voltage platform. Charging time varies by battery and charger, so check the manufacturer’s specification rather than planning around the runtime number alone.

Ways to reduce the interruption

  • Measure how long your normal mowing session takes, including time spent around trees, beds and gates.
  • Choose a mower that supports a second battery if your lawn is close to the practical runtime limit.
  • Keep a spare charged according to the manufacturer’s storage instructions instead of assuming a partially charged pack will finish the job.
  • Mow regularly so the blade is not forced through unusually tall, dense grass.
  • For a large property, compare a higher-capacity battery system or a riding mower rather than relying on a small walk-behind model.

Older articles can make the limitation sound worse than current testing. Consumer Reports’ 2018 test supervisor Frank Spinelli described electric mowers as running about 20–40 minutes on a charge; newer 2026 testing reports a longer 45–50-minute average. Neither figure applies universally, and neither removes the need to plan for charging.

2. The purchase price is usually higher than for a comparable gas mower

The initial investment is a common shock. Consumer Reports engineer Misha Kollontai states that “the initial investment can be higher for an electric mower.” The price typically includes the mower, a battery and a charger, whereas a gas mower’s starting price may not include any equivalent energy-storage hardware.

Electric ownership can recover part of that difference through lower operating and maintenance costs. There is no gasoline to buy, no engine oil to change and no spark plug, carburetor or fuel system to service. However, those savings accumulate over time; they do not make the checkout price lower.

Compare the costs over the period you expect to own the mower

Cost or requirement Battery electric mower Gas mower
Upfront purchase Generally higher for a comparable walk-behind model, especially when a battery and charger are included. Generally lower initially, according to Consumer Reports’ comparison.
Energy during mowing Electricity to recharge the battery; the amount depends on battery capacity and local electricity rates. Gasoline for each mowing session.
Routine engine maintenance No oil changes, spark plugs or fuel-system service; blade care and general cleaning still apply. Oil, spark-plug, air-filter and fuel-system maintenance are typical requirements.
Battery or fuel replacement A replacement battery may eventually be required. No traction battery, but fuel remains an ongoing expense.
Five-year ownership Can benefit from lower energy and maintenance costs, but a battery replacement around year five is plausible in Consumer Reports’ model. Often costs less to buy but continues to incur fuel and engine-maintenance costs.

The five-year comparison is not a promise of a specific total. Battery replacement timing depends on how often you mow, how deeply you discharge the pack, storage temperature and the manufacturer’s charging system. Price, warranty and electricity rates also differ by model and location. Treat the purchase price and a realistic replacement-battery allowance as separate line items when budgeting.

3. Replacement batteries can be expensive, and platforms create lock-in

A cordless mower is only as useful as its battery. Consumer Reports reported typical replacement-battery prices of $100–$300 in 2024, with some packs costing more than $400. Those are reported market ranges, not a universal price, and they can change as models and suppliers change.

Many manufacturers use a shared voltage platform: one battery may fit several tools from the same brand, but not a competing brand or a different voltage family. Platform compatibility can be useful if you already own matching equipment. It can also lock you into a brand when the original battery fails, because a cheaper third-party pack may be unavailable, unsupported or unsafe for that charger.

Battery life is not a fixed five-year promise

Consumer Reports’ five-year cost model treats replacement around year five as plausible while emphasizing that real timing depends on use and care. Frequent mowing, high heat, deep discharges and poor off-season storage can reduce useful life; gentle use and correct charging can extend it. A warranty may cover an early failure, but warranty length and terms are model-specific.

Before buying, check the exact replacement battery part number, its current price, the charger included in the box and whether the mower can run on more than one battery size. Also check whether the battery is sold separately after the mower is discontinued. A mower that appears inexpensive can become a poor value if its proprietary pack is difficult to source.

How to protect the pack you already have

  • Follow the maker’s charging limits and use the supplied or approved charger.
  • Do not leave the battery in direct sun, a hot vehicle or an unheated location exposed to severe cold.
  • For off-season storage, use the charge level and temperature guidance in the manual rather than storing it indefinitely at either 0% or 100%.
  • Keep the battery contacts dry and clean, and remove the pack before cleaning or servicing the mower.

As Kollontai puts it, “Following manufacturer recommendations on the use, charging, and off-season storage of your battery will help maximize its life.”

4. Cutting performance depends heavily on the model and conditions

“Electric mower” is not a performance specification. Motor output, blade design, deck shape, battery voltage, software controls and self-propelled gearing vary widely. Grass type, height, moisture and terrain can matter just as much.

Consumer Reports’ 2024 analysis found gas walk-behind mowers slightly ahead on average cutting performance. Its 2026 testing, however, found that the best battery models can outperform the highest-rated gas models. These findings are not contradictory: averages across a category can differ from the result of the best individual products.

Situations that expose a weaker model

  • Long or wet grass can slow the blade and produce an uneven cut.
  • Thick turf and repeated passes increase energy use and may trigger power-management limits.
  • Slopes and rough ground demand more from both the motor and self-propelled drive.
  • A nearly full collection bag can restrict airflow and make cutting less efficient.

Look for independent test results for the specific model, not just the battery platform’s advertised voltage. Check whether testing covered the type of grass and terrain you have, and whether the model’s claimed runtime was measured with self-propelled drive engaged. A mower that excels on a small, dry suburban lawn may be a poor choice for tall, damp grass on a slope.

5. Charging, storage and end-of-life handling add constraints

Electric equipment has no tailpipe emissions during use, but its battery still has to be charged, stored and eventually replaced. You need a suitable indoor or otherwise manufacturer-approved place for the battery and charger, a working electrical outlet and enough time to charge before the next mowing session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Temperature is a practical storage issue

Extreme heat and cold can damage a battery or temporarily reduce its available performance. Do not assume that a shed, garage or vehicle is suitable in every season. Follow the temperature limits and off-season procedure in the manual. Store the mower itself in a dry location, and remove the battery if the manufacturer instructs you to do so.

End-of-life batteries should not go in ordinary household trash

When a pack can no longer hold a useful charge, disposal becomes an environmental and safety concern. Sending lithium-ion batteries to landfill adds waste and can create fire risks if damaged packs are handled incorrectly. Recycling and take-back options vary by country, municipality, retailer and manufacturer, so verify the current local route before disposal. Do not puncture, dismantle or place a damaged battery in a regular recycling bin.

This is an important qualification to the environmental case for electric mowing. Avoiding gasoline exhaust is a benefit, but responsible battery management is part of the product’s footprint. Consumer Reports has highlighted both sides: moving away from gas equipment concerns environmental protection and personal health, while batteries still require careful end-of-life handling.

Question Electric mower implication Gas mower implication
How long is one mowing session? Stay within the tested battery runtime or budget for a spare and charging break. Refuel during or between sessions; the engine can continue as long as fuel is available.
Is the lawn near or above one-third of an acre? Verify capacity carefully; a second battery or a larger platform may be necessary. Usually less constrained by a single tank, although model fuel capacity still matters.
Is the terrain hilly or rough? Self-propelled drive and difficult grass can reduce runtime and increase energy demand. Mechanical drive avoids battery-runtime limits but still requires an engine capable of the terrain.
Do you value low routine maintenance? No gasoline, oil changes or spark plugs; blade sharpening and cleaning remain. More engine maintenance and fuel handling.
Can you store and charge a battery safely? Necessary for reliable use and battery life. No traction-battery storage requirement, but fuel must be stored and managed.
What happens at end of life? Battery recycling or a manufacturer/retailer take-back route is needed. Engine and fuel-system disposal still require proper handling, but there is no mower battery.

When an electric mower is still a sensible choice

Electric is often practical when the lawn is within the mower’s tested coverage, you can charge between sessions, and low noise, no exhaust and reduced routine maintenance matter to you. A smaller lawn can make the runtime limitation almost irrelevant, especially if you mow frequently and keep the grass at a manageable height.

Gas may be the safer fit when one session regularly exceeds the battery’s real-world runtime, the property is steep or rough, or you cannot store and charge lithium-ion batteries within the maker’s temperature and safety limits. The higher purchase price of electric equipment is not automatically offset in every household, particularly when a costly proprietary battery is likely to be needed.

Before purchase, write down your lawn’s approximate area, typical session length, slope, grass condition and available storage temperature. Then compare the exact mower’s tested runtime, included battery, replacement-pack price, warranty and platform compatibility. That process addresses the five drawbacks directly instead of relying on the word “electric” as a guarantee.
