If Elden Ring shows “Network Status Check Failed” on Xbox, first check for a game update. Bandai Namco Europe’s 24 February 2022 version 1.02 notice specifically said the Xbox online issue, including this error, should be fixed by the update. If you already have it or the error returns, check current service status and use Xbox network diagnostics before changing router settings.
1. Install any available Elden Ring update
The most directly relevant fix is the publisher’s Xbox update instruction. Bandai Namco Europe’s version 1.02 patch notes, dated 24 February 2022, say Xbox users’ online issue—including “Network Status Check Failed”—should now be fixed. The notice lists App Ver. 1.02 and Regulation Ver. 1.02.1. These are historical version identifiers, not proof that every later recurrence has the same cause.

- Press the Menu button and open Manage Games and Add-ons.
- Select Update if an update is available, then allow it to install before launching the game again.

2. Check whether a service problem may be involved
Before changing local settings, check the current Xbox service status and Elden Ring service notices from Bandai Namco. Service availability changes over time; the 2022 patch notice does not establish whether either service is up or down now. If a relevant outage is posted, wait for service to recover before troubleshooting your home network.

3. Test the Xbox connection
If no relevant service issue is reported, run the console’s network test and review its results. Bethesda’s Xbox support guidance for a different game describes checking service status, confirming network hardware is powered, testing the console connection, and checking NAT status. These are general Xbox diagnostics, not Elden Ring-specific remedies. Follow the current Xbox menu prompts for the connection test and NAT details; labels can vary by console software version.
- Confirm the Xbox is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network or wired connection.
- Check that the modem and router are powered and connected.
- Review the network-test result for a connection or NAT warning, then use Xbox’s guidance for that specific result.
4. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If your Xbox currently uses Wi-Fi and Ethernet is practical, try a wired connection as a diagnostic comparison. General connection guidance from Activision Support includes testing a wired connection. If wired works while Wi-Fi does not, the wireless link may be contributing; this test cannot fix a game-version, account, or server-side issue, and it is not a guaranteed Elden Ring fix.

5. Treat router port changes as a later step
Microsoft’s Xbox One network-port guidance covers platform-level network ports, but it does not establish an Elden Ring-specific port-forwarding fix for this error. Do not start by forwarding ports or disabling firewall protections. If Xbox diagnostics point to a router or firewall issue, use current Microsoft guidance and your router maker’s instructions, changing only the settings relevant to the reported problem.
