- Check your local waste authority. Search your city or county website for electronics recycling, e-waste drop-off, or household hazardous waste collection. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends checking local options because electronics collection is handled through local programs. EPA electronics donation and recycling guidance
- Check retailer and manufacturer programs. EPA identifies retailer Best Buy and TV-manufacturer websites as possible leads, but a program’s current service terms depend on the location and the device. Verify acceptance and fees directly before making plans. EPA electronics donation and recycling guidance
- Call the specific collection site. Ask whether it takes flat-screen TVs, your TV’s size and type, and whether you need an appointment or proof of residency. Illinois EPA advises residents to confirm device acceptance and notes that fees may apply. Illinois EPA electronics collection sites
If you share a city, county, or ZIP code, a local waste authority’s website is the best starting point for identifying an actual nearby option; no single destination or fee applies nationwide.
Can you put a flat-screen TV in the trash or recycling bin?
Do not assume a flat-screen TV belongs in curbside trash or mixed recycling. Local rules differ, and some authorities direct residents to designated electronics drop-off sites. For example, Kent County, Michigan, says flat-screen TVs and monitors should not go in its single-stream recycling cart or trash can and directs residents to its electronics drop-off locations. That is a Kent County rule, not a nationwide policy. Kent County televisions and monitors guidance

How should you prepare a TV for recycling or donation?

- Follow the program’s battery instructions. Remove batteries where applicable if the collection program directs you to do so. Lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them should not go in household garbage or municipal recycling bins; use the local battery collection instructions instead. EPA used household batteries guidance
- Do not dismantle the TV unless the program asks you to. Follow the collector’s directions for packing and delivery.
How can you choose a responsible electronics recycler?
When recycler practices matter—particularly for business or institutional equipment—look for a facility certified to R2 or e-Stewards standards. EPA says these accredited standards address environmental, worker-health, and security practices, including management of downstream materials. Use the standards’ directories to identify facilities, then verify that a listed site accepts TVs and check its service terms. EPA provides this information but does not endorse listed businesses or services. EPA certified electronics recyclers

Is a flat-screen TV the same as an old CRT television?
No. The special handling information for older cathode-ray-tube (CRT) televisions should not be applied to flat-screen sets. EPA says older CRT TVs and monitors contain an average of four pounds of lead and may require special handling; that figure concerns CRT devices, not flat-screen TVs.
