EDG’s C++ compiler frontend became publicly available on September 30, 2026, under the LLVM license. EDG as a corporation is winding down, but its frontend is continuing as an open-source project, with the C++ Alliance serving as its nonprofit fiscal sponsor and project home.

What changed with EDG?

The source code for EDG’s C++ frontend is now available at github.com/edgcpp/compiler. The release announcement describes the code as licensed under the LLVM license. The change is from a company-maintained product to a project intended to continue development with a broader community.

EDG’s announcement distinguishes the company’s closure from the frontend’s future: the corporation is going away, while the frontend remains usable and will continue to be developed as an open-source project. The official EDG announcement and FAQ provide the transition details.

Can organizations keep using EDG in commercial products?

The announcement says commercial products may continue to use the frontend under the terms of the LLVM license. It also says organizations with existing agreements can continue under those terms. The license and an organization’s individual agreement are separate documents; teams with specific contractual questions should review both rather than treating the announcement as legal advice.

Who will maintain the project and make decisions?

Experienced EDG engineers are the initial maintainers. The C++ Alliance provides nonprofit fiscal sponsorship and an open-source home for the project; the announcement does not describe the Alliance as the sole technical decision-maker. John Spicer chairs the Fiscal Sponsorship Committee, which oversees development alongside volunteers from the EDG user community. The stated goal is to open the process to community contributors while preserving the project’s technical quality.

Why does the transition matter to existing users?

EDG describes its frontend as used in compilers, developer tools and commercial products. The announcement includes testimonials from organizations that use EDG; these are statements from the named organizations, not independently audited measures of adoption.

  • Bruce Duncan, Director of Software Engineering at Veracode, says: “Veracode depends on the EDG compiler frontend for our Static Application Security Testing (SAST) of our customers’ C++ applications.”
  • Nicolas Bertolotti, Senior Team Leader and Principal Development Engineer at MathWorks, says: “For more than 20 years, EDG has been at the heart of our C and C++ analysis and instrumentation solutions.”

For users who depend on the frontend, public source availability creates a path to inspect the code and participate in its future development. It does not, by itself, specify how particular product integrations or support arrangements will change.

What is known about standards support and the roadmap?

The project says standard conformance remains a priority, supported by the community. However, the announcement and FAQ do not provide finalized roadmap details or a specific future C++ standard support schedule. Those details are expected to be shared once finalized, so users should not infer release dates or commitments from the transition announcement.

How can developers and current users get involved?

The project invites developers to report issues, contribute code and join technical discussions through its public project channels. Current users are also encouraged to share real-world experience. The code is hosted in the EDG compiler repository on GitHub; the official announcement directs questions and feedback to John Spicer.

What the announcement does not establish

The official announcement reports the release, license, stewardship and broad priorities, but it does not provide a finalized technical roadmap, a support schedule for future standards or quantitative adoption figures. Those points should remain open until the project publishes more detail.
