A 10mm socket is useful, but it is only one size in a much larger set of needs. For routine maintenance and approachable repairs, a beginner is better served by a useful range of sockets, safe lifting equipment, and a few versatile hand tools. This nine-tool list is a practical starting point, not a universal standard: the right tools depend on the vehicle and the job.
Why a 10mm socket isn’t a toolkit
Cars use different fastener sizes and shapes, and some are difficult to reach without an extension or a particular tool. A single 10mm socket may fit a fastener on one job, but it cannot substitute for a socket set, wrenches, or the other tools needed for common maintenance. Haynes recommends a range of socket sizes and extensions, while Nissan includes socket wrenches in its home-repair tool recommendations.

Think in terms of coverage: the tools below address fastening, lifting, basic diagnosis, visibility, and access to vehicle-specific procedures. You do not need every specialty tool before starting, and a tool that is useful for one repair may be unnecessary for another.
The nine useful tool categories
1. Socket set and ratchet
A socket set with a ratchet handles many nuts and bolts more quickly than turning them with a wrench alone. Choose a set with a practical range of sizes, a drive size suited to the jobs you expect to do, and extensions for fasteners that are recessed or awkward to reach. Haynes specifically calls out socket extensions; Nissan recommends socket wrenches. A single 10mm socket is one piece of this category, not a replacement for it.

2. Torque wrench
A torque wrench lets you tighten a fastener to a specified value when the vehicle’s procedure calls for one. The correct value is vehicle- and job-specific; consult the owner’s manual or service information rather than applying a generic torque figure. Check that the wrench’s range and drive match the procedure and the fasteners you will be tightening.
3. Jack stands or compatible ramps
Some work requires raising and supporting a vehicle. KYB’s guidance is direct: “Never work under a car supported only by a tire-change jack; use high-quality jack stands positioned properly for your vehicle.” Select equipment with an appropriate rated capacity, use the vehicle’s designated lifting and support points, and follow its instructions. Ramps may suit some tasks, but they are not appropriate for every job.

4. Set of regular wrenches
Wrenches reach fasteners where a socket and ratchet may not fit, and they can hold a nut while another tool turns the bolt. A useful range is more versatile than relying on one size. The exact sizes and wrench types you need depend on your vehicle and the work at hand.

5. Screwdrivers
A selection of screwdrivers covers screws used on covers, trim, and other components. Match the tip to the fastener rather than forcing a tool that does not fit; the wrong tip can damage the screw and make removal harder. Nissan includes screwdrivers among its basic home-repair tools.
6. Pliers
Pliers help grip, hold, bend, or remove components that are not suited to a wrench. Nissan groups pliers with wire cutters and wire strippers in its recommendations. For general maintenance, pliers are a useful hand-tool category; wire-specific tools become relevant when the job involves wiring. They are not substitutes for the correct tool on a fastener.

7. Diagnostic code reader
A compatible code reader can retrieve fault codes that help guide troubleshooting. It does not, by itself, prove which part has failed: codes point to a system or condition that may need further checks. Before buying or using one, verify that it supports your vehicle and offers the diagnostic functions you need. Haynes includes a diagnostic code reader in its essentials list.
8. Work light
A work light makes it easier to see fasteners and components in poorly lit areas. Choose one that illuminates the space where you work and can be positioned without getting in the way. Nissan includes a work light in its home-repair recommendations.

9. Vehicle-specific repair information
Use the owner’s manual or service information for your exact vehicle and procedure. It is where you should confirm the correct lifting points, required tools, access instructions, and any specified tightening values. Haynes recommends a Torx set as a tool category, but whether you need Torx tools—or another specialty bit—depends on the fasteners used on your vehicle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose tools for the job, not the shopping list
Before buying a tool or starting a repair, check what the vehicle’s instructions require. For the core categories above, compare the details that affect whether a tool will work:
- Sockets: size coverage, drive size, and included extensions.
- Torque wrench: required torque range, drive compatibility, and whether the procedure specifies torque tightening.
- Lifting equipment: rated capacity, compatibility with the vehicle’s support points, and correct positioning.
- Code reader: vehicle compatibility and the diagnostic functions it actually provides.
- Specialty tools: the fastener type and access requirements of the particular repair.
There is no single nine-tool list that fits every vehicle or every repair. Nissan’s 2022 recommendations also include an impact wrench, dead-blow hammer, multimeter, and wire-specific tools; these may be useful for particular work, but they are not mandatory for every beginner. O’Reilly likewise describes socket sets and general hand tools as part of a DIY mechanic’s toolkit. Buy for a procedure you understand, rather than assuming every item on a broad list is essential.

Start with safety and the service procedure
For any repair involving a raised vehicle, identify the correct lifting and support points and follow the vehicle’s instructions. Never rely on a tire-change jack alone while working underneath. If you cannot confirm the correct support method or equipment for the job, do not proceed beneath the vehicle. For fastening work, use the specified tool and torque value when the procedure calls for them; for diagnosis, treat a retrieved code as a clue to investigate, not a verdict on the failed part.
