A Jetson Orin NX can deliver compact, high-throughput inference for a properly engineered mission, but a developer kit is not flight hardware and no commercial module should be called radiation hardened without mission-specific evidence. For high-assurance autonomy, radiation-tolerant CPU/FPGA or hybrid systems remain essential. Use large GPUs such as the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition on the ground, where spacecraft SWaP and radiation constraints do not apply.
What to buy at a glance
There is no universally “best” satellite AI computer. The right choice follows the orbit, mission lifetime, acceptable failure probability, image or sensor workload, and available power and cooling. NASA identifies board form factor, processor, memory architecture, power conditioning and radiation tolerance as the foundation of spacecraft command and data handling.

|---|---|---|
| Model development, hardware-in-the-loop and ground prototypes | NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit | Flight carrier design, thermal behavior, radiation response, boot integrity and end-to-end mission reliability |
| Compact onboard inference with a custom spacecraft design | Jetson Orin NX module | Mission-specific carrier, conduction cooling, shielding or tolerance strategy, watchdogs, storage, power transients and qualification |
| Deterministic operation and stronger radiation assurance | Radiation-tolerant CPU, FPGA or hybrid computer | Device-level assurance, software certification, fault-containment and workload performance |
| High-assurance science processing or autonomy programs | NASA SpaceCube or HPSC-style architecture | Program availability, integration schedule, toolchain and mission-specific qualification |
| Ground-station processing of large satellite data sets | RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition or comparable data-center accelerator | Server power, cooling, host software, throughput and operational cost |
The table is a screening tool, not a flight-approval decision. A mission that cannot tolerate a single-event upset, an unrecoverable boot failure or an overheating module needs redundancy and fault management in addition to raw AI performance.

Start with the spacecraft environment
Orbit, radiation and mission duration
Low Earth orbit (LEO) is not one standardized radiation environment. Shielding, inclination, altitude, solar activity and time in orbit change the total ionizing dose (TID) and the rate of single-event effects. Geostationary and deep-space missions generally impose more demanding radiation conditions, but even a short LEO mission needs a credible analysis of dose, particle flux and upset consequences.

Ask each supplier or integrator for the evidence behind its radiation statement: parts tested, test method, dose level, bias condition, error rate, destructive-event limits and whether the result applies to the complete assembly or only an individual component. A module’s commercial status is not evidence of radiation tolerance. ESA describes radiation tolerance and thermal management as key challenges when qualifying high-performance commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) computing modules on conduction-cooled platforms.
Thermal path and available power
In vacuum, convection does not remove heat. The board must conduct heat into a cold plate, chassis or dedicated radiator through a defined mechanical path. Measure the entire assembly: module, carrier, memory, storage, regulators and any FPGA or sensor interface. Specify sustained power, startup surge, worst-case inference load and safe throttling behavior rather than quoting a nominal board value.
NASA’s 2026 Small Spacecraft Systems Virtual Institute entry for Space Edge One lists a Jetson Xavier NX implementation at 7 W in a 10×10 cm package for LEO. That is a mission example, not a promise that every Xavier NX installation will run at 7 W or fit the same envelope. Thermal interface material, enclosure, clock settings and workload determine the actual result.

ESA’s Technology CubeSats overview describes CubeSat units ranging from 1 to 10 kilograms and using 10×10×10 cm units. A “one-U” volume therefore does not guarantee room for a computer, radiator interface, harness, storage and shielding. Reserve volume for connectors, service loops and access to a supervisor or recovery path.

Do not install the developer kit in a spacecraft and infer qualification from a successful bench test. The kit does not establish radiation tolerance, vacuum operation, launch vibration, thermal-vacuum endurance, connector retention, power conditioning or long-term supply continuity. Use it to freeze software assumptions and produce repeatable workload measurements, then migrate to a controlled flight design.
Jetson Orin NX module
The Orin NX module is the more relevant commercial-GPU candidate for a compact onboard computer. ESA’s Sterna concept uses Jetson Orin NX in a PC/104-compatible form factor and reports at least 100 TOPS at INT8 and a mass under 500 g for the project configuration. Those figures describe that concept and its stated precision; they are not a universal performance or mass guarantee for another carrier, thermal solution or software build.
Recommended Free Tools
Plan the module as one part of a spacecraft computer. The carrier should provide regulated power, protected boot and storage, sensor and network I/O, health telemetry, a hardware watchdog and a way to force a safe state. The mechanical design must conduct heat and survive launch loads. Include a supervisor that can reset the module independently if the operating system hangs.
Radiation-tolerant CPU, FPGA and hybrid computers
Radiation-tolerant processors and FPGAs remain the conservative choice when deterministic timing, fault containment and documented radiation performance outweigh commercial-GPU convenience. NASA’s onboard-processing tables include LEON and GR712RC processor families, RTG4 FPGA systems and related architectures. These platforms usually demand more specialized development and may deliver less neural-network throughput per watt than a modern commercial GPU, but they can provide predictable behavior, error handling and longer qualification evidence.
A hybrid design can place a radiation-tolerant controller in charge of boot, command handling and safe-mode recovery while a higher-performance accelerator handles an isolated inference workload. The controller must be able to reset, power-cycle or bypass the accelerator and continue a minimum mission.

SpaceCube and HPSC approaches
NASA’s SpaceCube family uses radiation-tolerant FPGA technology with upset detection and correction for onboard science and autonomy. It is a useful reference when an application needs reconfigurable processing, deterministic pipelines and explicit fault management rather than a general-purpose AI stack.
NASA describes the High-Performance Spaceflight Computing (HPSC) project as providing high-performance AI dataflow processing with scalable vector computing for future science and autonomy systems. HPSC is best treated as a program-level path, not an off-the-shelf replacement for a board you can order today. Confirm the procurement route, delivery schedule, development tools and flight-qualification status for the specific program.
Ground accelerators
Ground stations can use hardware that would be impractical in orbit. NVIDIA lists the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition for ground-based satellite-data processing. A server accelerator can run larger models, batch multiple spacecraft passes, retain extensive imagery and support retraining without imposing launch mass, radiation shielding or spacecraft heat-rejection limits. Keep the ground pipeline separate from the flight computer’s real-time safety functions: a faster ground model cannot repair a spacecraft that has already lost control authority.
Compare candidates with a mission worksheet
Score every candidate against the same evidence. A TOPS number by itself is not a mission metric; record precision, model, batch size, clock state, thermal condition and measured latency.
| Criterion | Questions to answer | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Radiation environment | What TID, displacement damage and single-event effects are expected for this orbit and lifetime? | Parts list, radiation test reports, shielding analysis and upset-rate assumptions |
| Inference throughput | Which model and precision are used, and is the result sustained or a short peak? | Reproducible benchmark with INT8, FP16 or other stated precision, latency and thermal state |
| SWaP and thermal path | Can the spacecraft continuously remove worst-case heat at the available bus voltage? | Mass properties, dimensions, power envelope, thermal-vacuum data and interface drawings |
| Memory and storage | How much usable RAM and nonvolatile storage remain after the operating system and logs? | Memory type, ECC behavior, storage endurance, boot-device redundancy and scrubbing plan |
| Sensor and network I/O | Can it ingest the sensor rate without dropped frames or a separate bridge? | Electrical standards, connector pinout, driver support and measured sustained data rate |
| Fault tolerance | What happens after a bit flip, driver lockup, watchdog timeout or corrupted image? | ECC, error logging, watchdog, reset domains, safe boot and recovery tests |
| Software toolchain | Can the exact model run on the flight software image without unsupported operators? | CUDA/TensorRT or FPGA tool versions, deterministic build procedure and update process |
| Heritage and qualification | Has this configuration flown, and which parts of that configuration match yours? | Mission references, environmental test reports and configuration-control records |
| Supply chain | Can identical modules, memory and connectors be procured through the mission lifetime? | Product lifecycle notices, approved alternates, lot traceability and spares plan |
How to move from prototype to flight hardware
- Write the mission envelope. Document orbit, lifetime, dose estimate, launch loads, allowable mass and volume, bus voltage, peak and continuous power, thermal interface temperature and required availability.
- Define the inference workload. Freeze representative sensor data, model architecture, input resolution, precision, acceptable latency and maximum missed-frame rate. Measure sustained operation, not a single favorable run.
- Prototype on accessible hardware. Use an Orin Nano Developer Kit or equivalent laboratory platform to validate preprocessing, model conversion, telemetry and failure handling. Keep the software image reproducible and record tool versions.
- Select the flight architecture. Decide whether the accelerator is mission-critical, isolated as a payload processor or subordinate to a radiation-tolerant controller. Add independent watchdog and reset paths before layout.
- Design the carrier and thermal path. Implement regulated and filtered power, protected boot storage, sensor I/O, a cold-plate interface and temperature sensors at the module and regulator hot spots.
- Test radiation behavior. Use mission-representative parts and operating states. Characterize resets, silent data corruption, performance degradation and destructive failures; then set autonomous recovery rules.
- Run environmental qualification. Conduct vibration, shock, thermal-vacuum, thermal cycling, electromagnetic compatibility and outgassing checks for the assembled configuration. A component data sheet cannot substitute for assembly-level evidence.
- Validate autonomy under faults. Inject corrupted inputs, dropped frames, memory errors, clock changes, storage faults and accelerator hangs. Verify that the supervisor reaches a defined safe state and that commands can restore service.
- Control configuration and spares. Lock hardware revisions, firmware, model weights and compiler versions. Buy life-of-mission spares early and document an approved replacement procedure.
Power, memory and thermal details that change the decision
Power is a budget, not a label
Separate idle, acquisition, preprocessing, inference, compression, transmission and recovery power. An accelerator that fits an average budget may still brown out the bus during startup or create a thermal excursion during a long image pass. Set a current limit and define behavior when the limit is reached: reduce clocks, skip frames, defer inference or shut down to a supervisor-controlled state.

Memory errors can look like AI errors
Neural-network weights, intermediate tensors and sensor buffers occupy different memory regions and have different consequences when corrupted. Use ECC where available, scrub or reload critical data, validate model files at boot and keep a known-good image. Log corrected and uncorrected events with timestamps so ground operators can distinguish a transient upset from a degrading component.
Thermal throttling changes latency
Report latency at the stabilized thermal state, not immediately after power-on. A model that meets a 100-millisecond requirement for two minutes but throttles after ten minutes fails a sustained-observation mission. Include cold-start, hot-case and reduced-power modes in the acceptance test.

- Convert the model with the exact CUDA, TensorRT, compiler and driver versions intended for flight.
- Record unsupported operators, fallback layers and precision changes; a silent FP32 fallback can alter both speed and numerical behavior.
- Use deterministic preprocessing and timestamp every sensor frame to expose dropped or reordered data.
- Separate mission-critical control code from experimental model updates. Model replacement must be authenticated, rollback-capable and possible without losing safe mode.
- Budget storage for two bootable software images, model weights, logs and recovery telemetry.
- Test behavior when the model produces low-confidence, out-of-range or physically impossible results. AI output should be bounded by conventional navigation and safety rules.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
“The TOPS figure is high, so the board is suitable.”
TOPS may be a peak INT8 figure measured on a favorable kernel. Fix this by benchmarking the complete model, sensor pipeline and thermal state, then reporting latency, throughput and power together.
“A commercial module is radiation hardened.”
Commercial availability says nothing about TID, single-event effects or recovery. Fix this by obtaining configuration-specific radiation data or isolating the module behind a fault-tolerant controller with a mission-approved risk assessment.

“The board’s nominal watts fit the spacecraft budget.”
Nominal power omits surge, regulators, storage, interfaces and thermal margins. Fix this by measuring the complete assembly through all mission modes and reserving margin for aging and hot-case operation.
“The accelerator can also be the spacecraft’s only computer.”
A general-purpose AI module may hang, corrupt storage or lose its driver. Fix this by providing an independent supervisor, safe boot, reset and power-cycle capability, and a minimal command path that does not depend on the accelerator.
Decision examples
Short LEO technology demonstrator
If the payload is experimental, the orbit and lifetime are modest, and a missed observation is acceptable, an Orin NX-based computer can be reasonable after thermal, vibration and radiation testing. Keep the flight role non-critical and preserve a separate spacecraft bus computer for command and recovery.
Long-duration autonomous Earth-observation mission
Prioritize radiation evidence, ECC, watchdogs, redundant storage and graceful degradation. A radiation-tolerant CPU/FPGA controller with an isolated accelerator may be safer than putting every function on a commercial GPU, even if the latter has higher nominal inference throughput.
High-rate science processing on the ground
Move large models and batch analytics to a ground server accelerator such as the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition. The spacecraft can perform only the filtering or event detection needed to reduce downlink volume, while the ground segment handles expensive reprocessing.
Bottom line
Use a Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit to prove models and interfaces, not to claim flight readiness. Consider a Jetson Orin NX when compact onboard inference justifies a custom carrier, thermal design, supervisor and qualification campaign. Choose radiation-tolerant CPU/FPGA or hybrid systems when deterministic recovery and documented radiation performance dominate. For the highest-assurance science and autonomy programs, evaluate SpaceCube or HPSC-style architectures. Keep large server accelerators on the ground. The winning purchase is the computer whose complete, tested configuration meets the mission’s radiation, thermal, power, fault-tolerance and lifecycle requirements—not the one with the largest headline TOPS number.
