Make a fall tree without a toilet paper roll using old newspaper, magazines, flyers, cardboard, a paper plate, or a recycled soda bottle. Choose a flat collage for a paper-only project, pine cones for paint-rolled leaf marks, or scrunched tissue paper for a fuller canopy.
Choose a tree craft to match what you have

Make a twisted newspaper and flyer tree
Gather materials
- Old newspaper, magazines, or store flyers
- Thin cardboard or brown paper for the trunk and branches
- A sheet of colored paper for the background
- Glue and scissors suitable for the child and material
Build the collage
- Make a trunk by wrinkling brown paper or painting old newspaper brown. Twist the paper into a trunk shape, trim it to fit, and glue it near the bottom of the background sheet.
- Cut rectangles in varied sizes for branches. Twist each piece and glue it to the trunk. Use as many branches as you like.
- Cut leaf shapes from newspaper, magazine pages, or flyers. Choose reds, yellows, oranges, and browns for an autumn canopy, mixing tones for a layered look.
- Glue leaves along the branches. Add some directly to the background if you want a fuller canopy, and overlap a few at the bottom to suggest fallen leaves.
This version follows Easy Peasy and Fun’s Fall Tree Newspaper Craft, which leaves the branch count open.

Roll pine cones through paint for leaf-like marks
Gather materials
- Small pine cones
- Fall-colored paint and a paper plate
- Brown paper, white paper, glue, and scissors
Paint the tree
- Cut strips from brown paper to make a trunk and limbs, then glue them onto white paper.
- Put paint on a paper plate and roll pine cones through it.
- Roll the painted pine cones across the page around the branches to make leaf-like marks. Roll some along the bottom for fallen leaves.
- Let the picture dry before displaying it.
For an option that keeps the rolling area contained, Crafty Morning’s tutorial suggests placing the paper in a cardboard box and rolling the cones there. This changes where the activity takes place; it is not a guarantee against paint spills.

Make a fuller canopy with a paper plate and tissue
Gather materials
- A paper plate and cardboard
- Red, yellow, orange, or gold tissue paper, cut into squares
- Brown paint or a brown marker
- School glue and a stapler
Assemble the canopy and trunk
- Cut a trunk from cardboard. Keep a small cardboard scrap to stamp bark-like lines onto the trunk with brown paint. Use a brown marker instead if you want to skip that texture step.
- Glue tissue-paper squares onto sections on the back of the paper plate, scrunching them as you go until the canopy is filled.
- Staple the cardboard trunk to the lower edge of the plate.

Scouts Malta’s activity uses the five-pointed base of a recycled soda bottle to make repeated, blossom-like paint marks. To adapt it for a fall tree, use autumn colors and treat the marks as leaves; that seasonal framing is an adaptation of the handout’s activity, not its original instruction.

- Paint a branch on blank paper and let it dry.
- Dip the bottom of a recycled soda bottle in paint.
- Stamp marks around the branch to create a cluster of leaves.
