Then compare those numbers with the installation guide for the exact washer you plan to buy; cabinet dimensions alone do not establish that it will fit.
What to measure before you shop
Use a tape measure and record usable width, height, and depth at the washer’s actual location. Measure the narrowest points, not just the room’s overall footprint: trim, floor or wall molding, cabinets, shelves, and other obstructions can reduce the space available.

- Width: Measure between the closest obstructions at the washer position. Check more than one point if walls, trim, or cabinets are uneven.
- Height: Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction, such as the underside of a counter or cabinet.
- Depth: Measure from the back wall to the front edge of the available space, noting anything that projects into it.
Whirlpool’s guide to measuring for a washer and dryer recommends a tape measure and treating the appliance’s surrounding space as part of the measurement. LG likewise advises accounting for door, floor, and wall moldings in its measure-first guidance.
Allow for hookups and the installed depth
A washer’s published cabinet depth is not necessarily the depth it occupies once installed. Hoses, water and drain connections, and the required space behind the unit can push it farther into the room. Note where the water supply, drain, and electrical or gas connections are, then check the installation requirements for the washer and configuration you are considering.

The published guidance varies by context: Whirlpool offers at least 6 inches behind appliances as general planning advice, while an LG front-loader checklist specifies at least 4 inches behind the units it covers. These are not interchangeable universal rules. Follow the installation guide for your exact model.
Check the space needed to open and use the washer
Front-load washers
Measure the space in front of the washer and confirm that the door can open far enough for loading and unloading without hitting a wall, another appliance, or a doorway. Whirlpool suggests approximately 4 feet of front space as general planning guidance for front-load access; check the selected washer’s door-open dimensions and your layout rather than treating that suggestion as a model specification.

Top-load washers
Make sure the lid can open fully beneath any cabinet, shelf, counter, or ceiling obstruction. The closed washer’s height does not tell you whether the lid has operating clearance.

A washer can fit its opening and still be impossible to carry or maneuver there. Starting at the delivery entrance, measure the narrowest usable width and height along the entire route: doorways, halls, turns, landings, and stairs. Include handles, latches, shelves, and other protrusions that reduce clearance. Compare the route with the washer’s delivery dimensions and account for turns as well as straight passages.

LG’s route guidance gives thresholds for the particular large-capacity products it covers. Do not apply those thresholds to other washers without checking their dimensions and delivery requirements.

Write down the opening, operating-space, hookup, and route measurements before choosing a washer. Compare them with the product’s published width, height, and depth, door-open dimensions where relevant, and installation instructions. Recheck the fit if you plan to add a pedestal or install the washer under a counter. A “standard size” description is not a substitute for checking the actual measurements.

Manufacturer examples show why model-specific instructions matter. An LG installation guide for the washer-and-dryer pair it covers calls for a minimum area of 60 × 40.8 × 37.3 inches; it lists units measuring 29 inches wide × 40.8 inches high × 32.3 inches deep and shows a 57-inch door-open depth. These are dimensions and requirements for the products described in that LG installation guide, not general rules for every washer. As the guide says, “Be sure to check ALL dimensions, including depth, to ensure a proper fit.”
