Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou usually cannot tell whether a scientific paper was written or illustrated with AI from style or appearance alone. Treat unusual wording, polished prose, or a suspicious-looking figure as a reason to verify—not as proof. Check disclosures, references, underlying evidence, and image integrity separately, then follow the journal’s process if concerns remain.
What “AI-generated” can mean in a paper
Separate three different questions before judging a paper:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- AI-assisted writing: A tool may have helped draft or edit text. That does not establish that the claims or sources are false, but authors remain responsible for the submitted work.
- AI-generated or altered imagery: A figure may have been created or changed with an AI tool. The implications depend on what the image represents and the journal’s rules.
- Image duplication or manipulation: Reusing or altering image regions is a research-image integrity concern, but it is not the same as generative AI. Detection methods for duplication cannot, by themselves, establish AI origin.
No style cue or visual impression establishes any of these on its own. A detector’s flag is a lead to review, not a verdict.
How to check a paper, step by step
1. Look for disclosure and provenance
Review the acknowledgements, methods, figure captions, and any other location specified by the journal. Look for the tool named and an explanation of its role. Disclosure tells you what the authors report; it does not independently confirm that the content is accurate. Requirements vary, so consult the journal’s current author instructions rather than assuming one publisher’s rule applies everywhere. See the ICMJE recommendations, CDC guidance for authors, and Elsevier’s journal policy.

2. Verify references against authoritative records
Search for each important cited work in the journal or publisher’s site, through its DOI record, or in another authoritative catalog. Confirm the title, authors, journal, and year, then open the source and check that it actually supports the claim attached to it. A plausible-looking citation is not enough. NIH warns that presenting AI-generated, non-existent references as real may constitute fabrication; human authors are responsible for checking citations and attribution. See NIH research-integrity reminders and Elsevier’s book and commissioned-content policy.
3. Check important claims in their original sources
For consequential statements, trace the evidence rather than relying on confident-sounding prose. Compare quotations, reported figures, methods, and conclusions with the cited papers or data. The ICMJE cautions that AI output can be incorrect, incomplete, or biased; the CDC likewise advises authors to verify sources and extracted data. This check is useful regardless of whether AI was involved.

4. Inspect figures for image-integrity issues
Compare panels within the paper and, where available, with earlier publications or source records. Note repeated panels presented as separate experiments, unexplained inconsistencies, or changes that could obscure or introduce scientific information. These observations may warrant expert review, but they do not prove that an image was AI-generated or that anyone intended to mislead.
A 2021 study by Mazaheri, Urrutia Avila, and Roy-Chowdhury reported 90% accuracy for its method on the study’s evaluated task of detecting duplicated images in scientific publications, and an approximately 13% improvement over comparison manipulation detectors in that evaluation. Those figures concern that specific image-duplication task; they are not performance measures for detecting generative-AI images generally. See the 2021 study.

5. Read the relevant journal’s image and text rules
Policies depend on publisher, journal, and image purpose. Elsevier’s guidance distinguishes some explanatory images from research-data images and formal research methods. JAMA Network also sets requirements for figures and text in its medical-publication context. Neither policy should be treated as a universal rule for every journal; consult the current instructions for the paper in question. See JAMA Network author guidance.
6. Escalate specific, documented concerns
If verification leaves a substantial concern, record the exact passage, citation, or figure and contact the journal or the relevant research-integrity office through its stated process. Avoid public accusations based only on an AI detector or visual impression. Automated flags and apparent anomalies call for review, not a conclusion about authorship or intent.

Why AI detectors and visual “tells” are not enough
Polished prose, awkward phrasing, repetitive language, or an unusual-looking image can prompt a closer look, but none proves AI involvement. A text detector evaluates text under its own method and scope; an image-duplication tool looks for a different kind of signal. Results from unlike tasks or datasets cannot be treated as a shared accuracy benchmark.
The sources cited here do not establish a universal clue that proves a scientific text or image came from AI, nor do they provide a comparable current benchmark for ranking text detectors on scientific prose. If considering a detector, ask what it actually examines, what its performance was evaluated on, whether a human reviews flags, and whether uploading an unpublished manuscript could compromise confidentiality.

What authors remain responsible for
AI assistance does not transfer accountability from the people submitting a paper. ICMJE says authors should carefully review and edit AI-generated content because it can be incorrect, incomplete, or biased. Human authors must also check source accuracy and attribution and follow the journal’s disclosure rules. A disclosure is not a substitute for verification, and a lack of visible disclosure alone does not establish how a paper was produced.
