EA Play is usually better value if you plan to play several games in its current Play List during the time you’re subscribed; buying games individually is usually better if you want a few specific titles and want to keep access after paying. The right choice depends on your platform and region, the games and editions you want, current store prices, and how long you expect to play.
What you get with EA Play—and what you keep
EA Play includes access to a changing Play List while your membership is active, select new-release trials of up to 10 hours, member rewards, and a 10% discount on eligible EA digital purchases. Play List access is temporary, not ownership. Electronic Arts says, “If you cancel, you’ll lose all EA Play benefits at the end of your current billing cycle, including access to trials and games in our collection.” If your membership ends, you’ll need to own the game separately, have another entitlement, or rejoin to play it through EA Play. EA’s cancellation guidance says progress is retained as long as you do not manually delete the save files. Read EA’s cancellation guidance.

How to work out which is better value for you
- Check the local membership price. Use the price shown at checkout for your platform and region, and choose the period you actually expect to subscribe.
- Check the Play List on that platform. Count only games you genuinely intend to play while the membership is active—not the whole catalog.
- Compare current prices for those games. Check the same platform, region, and edition, and account for sales. The relevant comparison is the cost of games you would actually buy against the membership fee.
- Add other benefits only if you will use them. Trials, rewards, and the 10% discount can add value. Do not count the discount on excluded purchases, or where another offer gives you a better price.
- Account for access after the membership. If you want to return to a game later without renewing, include the value of owning it rather than accessing it through the Play List.
As a reference point, EA’s FAQ displays US-dollar prices of $5.99 monthly and $39.99 yearly. At those displayed rates, the annual fee is roughly the cost of 6.7 monthly payments ($39.99 ÷ $5.99). If you counted only the 10% discount, you would need $399.90 in eligible purchases at full pre-discount prices to offset a $39.99 annual fee, or $59.90 to offset one $5.99 monthly fee. These are arithmetic comparisons based on EA’s displayed prices and discount—not a guarantee that a purchase qualifies or that the displayed rates apply at your checkout.

EA says membership selection applies to one platform, and the member discount applies on the platform where you joined. Play List availability can also vary by country. Check the catalog and checkout on the platform you intend to use rather than assuming membership or benefits carry across platforms.

EA’s terms say an internet connection is required to confirm an active subscription initially and periodically afterward. They also allow content benefits to be changed, added, or removed, so the current Play List is not guaranteed to remain unchanged throughout your membership.

Discounts cannot be combined with other offers or prepaid cards unless expressly authorized. Check the EA Play terms and your platform’s own rules for the purchase you have in mind.

When each option makes sense
Choose EA Play when…
- Several games you want are currently in your platform’s Play List.
- You expect to play them within the subscription period, rather than relying on access later.
- You will use eligible trials, rewards, or discounted purchases enough to add meaningful value.
Buy individually when…
- You want only a few particular games and their current prices compare favorably with the membership cost.
- You value continued access without needing an active EA Play subscription.
- A game or edition you want is not in the Play List or is excluded from the membership discount.
