The Dyson Gen5outsize Absolute is built for bigger cleaning jobs: its 0.5-gallon bin and wider main floor head mean fewer pauses to empty and fewer passes across open floor. The trade-off is an 8.6-pound machine that is less nimble than the standard Gen5detect, especially when cleaning furniture, stairs, or overhead. Its advertised 140-minute maximum also assumes use of two batteries, not one charge.
What comes with the Gen5outsize Absolute?
Dyson’s US product page describes the Gen5outsize Absolute as a package with two cleaner heads and five accessories. Its visible list names the Fluffy Optic cleaner head, Hair screw tool, built-in dusting and crevice tool, combination tool, additional battery, Wall dok, and charger. RTINGS documents an Absolute configuration with a Digital Motorbar XL head and an additional battery, but other Gen5outsize/Absolute bundles may have the regular Digital Motorbar head and no extra battery. Dyson calls it “Our most powerful cordless vacuum, for bigger cleans.” That is manufacturer marketing language, not an independent comparative finding. Dyson’s product representations also conflict on the suction figure, so a single Air Watts number is not reliable without checking the exact regional model specification.

Dyson lists the vacuum at 8.6 lb, with a 0.5-gallon (1.9-liter) bin, an 18-cyclone system, whole-machine HEPA filtration, and a 4.5-hour charge time. Those are manufacturer specifications for the US product page. The bin is the defining practical difference: TechRadar compares it with the Gen5detect’s 0.2-gallon (0.8-liter) bin and describes the Outsize’s capacity as 150% larger. TechRadar’s comparison also says the Outsize’s main Digital Motorbar head is 25% wider than the standard Gen5detect’s; the Fluffy Optic head remains the same size.

The wider head can make open areas quicker to cover, while the bigger bin reduces how often a cleaning session has to stop for emptying. In exchange, the machine carries more bulk. TechRadar reports it is about 14 oz (400 g) heavier than the Gen5detect. That difference is especially relevant if a cleaning routine involves carrying the vacuum between floors or frequently switching to handheld use.
What does the 140-minute runtime mean?
Dyson advertises up to 140 minutes of runtime, and the US Absolute package shown includes an additional battery. TechRadar explains that the maximum is consecutive use of two battery packs; it reports up to 70 minutes per battery in Eco mode. Treat 140 minutes as a two-pack advertised maximum, not the expected runtime from one battery or a guarantee for every cleaning mode and task. Actual runtime varies with settings and use. The on/off button means the vacuum does not require holding a trigger throughout cleaning, according to RTINGS. Its crevice tool is integrated into the wand, so it is available without finding a separate tool. These choices suit longer whole-home sessions, though the large body can still be awkward in tight spaces.

These are RTINGS ratings, not percentages, guarantees, or results from this article’s own testing. RTINGS updated its review with runtime, mobility, air-quality, and swappable-battery test sections on March 19, 2026, and notes earlier revisions to floor-pickup testing; read the scores in the context of that evolving test bench. Its pet-hair discussion says the Hair Screw Tool performs well on upholstered furniture in Auto mode, while the large dirt compartment can make it difficult to reach into sofa-arm gaps. Is the Outsize better than the Gen5detect?
The choice is mainly capacity and floor coverage versus handling. TechRadar’s comparison lists maximum suction of 250 AW for the Outsize and 280 AW for the regular Gen5detect; those are comparison-page figures, not independent laboratory findings. Dyson’s own product representations conflict on the Outsize suction specification, so do not treat either figure as a definitive specification for every regional variant.

RTINGS says the two perform very similarly overall, but considers the standard Gen5detect the better choice for most people who do not need the Outsize’s extra capacity. TechRadar likewise favors the smaller model for regular-sized homes and frequent handheld cleaning. The Outsize is easier to justify when large floor areas and fewer interruptions matter more than maneuverability.

- More likely to suit: Homes with substantial floor area, frequent cleaning, pets, or a preference for emptying the bin less often. The wider Motorbar can cover more floor per pass, while the large bin helps limit interruptions.
- Less likely to suit: Small homes, frequent stair or furniture cleaning, overhead work, or tight layouts where carrying and steering a heavier vacuum is a regular part of the job.
- Worth checking before purchase: The precise cleaner head, included battery, accessories, regional configuration, and current seller listing. Bundles vary, so confirm the contents rather than assuming every Absolute package is identical.
What do price and availability look like?
When Dyson’s US page was accessed on October 7, 2026, it showed $1,149.99 and “Currently out of stock.” That is a time- and region-specific snapshot, not a lasting price or an indication of stock at other retailers.
