CoverageMap’s 2026 comparison lists AT&T as the area-coverage leader, Verizon as the median-download-speed and reliability leader, and T-Mobile as the latency leader. Treat these as different strengths—not an overall ranking—and check service at home, work, and along your regular routes before switching.
Which North Dakota network is best for your priority?
| Priority | Network to investigate first | What the comparison reports |
|---|---|---|
| Mapped area coverage | AT&T | 98.1% listed coverage (CoverageMap, accessed 2026) |
| Median download speed | Verizon | 168.0 Mbps (CoverageMap, accessed 2026) |
| Reliability score | Verizon | 8.4/10 (CoverageMap, accessed 2026) |
| Latency | T-Mobile | 56 ms, the lowest figure in CoverageMap’s “Top Performers” section (accessed 2026) |
These measures answer different questions. A larger mapped coverage figure does not mean faster service, and a statewide speed median does not predict performance at a particular home or on a rural road. CoverageMap combines FCC coverage data with crowd-sourced speed tests; its results are not an FCC ranking or a service guarantee. See CoverageMap’s North Dakota comparison.

What the statewide figures show—and what they do not
CoverageMap’s North Dakota page reports more than 51,000 tests overall. The carrier figures below are crowd-sourced speed-test medians and associated scores, not controlled tests of every location. The page does not clearly state a data-collection period, so the figures should not be read as results from a specific testing window.

| Verizon | 97.2% | 168.0 Mbps | 12.7 Mbps | 8.4/10 | Over 24,000 |
| T-Mobile | 93.0% | 60.9 Mbps | 4.7 Mbps | 4.9/10 | Over 8,500 |
All figures in this table are reported by CoverageMap’s North Dakota comparison (accessed 2026). Coverage and speed-test samples measure different things: the listed coverage percentages should not be treated as the share of residents with dependable indoor service, and test counts do not establish how a network performs at your address.

How to check which carrier works at your address
- Start with your actual locations. Enter your home and workplace in the FCC National Broadband Map and compare providers. Then check each carrier’s own map: AT&T’s coverage map and Verizon’s coverage map. Carrier maps may use different assumptions, including roaming; both AT&T and Verizon describe their coverage as approximate.
- Check the routes and destinations you actually use. Include rural drives, regular stops, and places outside town centers. A statewide map or a strong signal in one town does not establish coverage along an entire route.
- Compare like with like. In the FCC map, compare the same technology layer—such as 4G or 5G—and the same mobile view and performance threshold for each provider. The map offers mobile views for outdoor stationary and in-vehicle coverage.
- Check indoor service separately. The FCC’s mobile coverage map does not show indoor availability. Its modeled coverage can differ from actual results because of the device, cell-site capacity, and terrain. See the FCC’s explanation of what appears on the National Broadband Map.
- Confirm the phone and plan. Verify that your exact handset supports the carrier’s network features and bands, then review the plan’s current terms with the provider.
Why 4G, 5G, and your phone matter
A map’s 5G layer shows reported coverage, not a guarantee that every compatible-looking phone can use every 5G band or that 5G will be available indoors. T-Mobile says a 5G-capable device is required for 5G access, while Verizon notes that not every 5G device supports all bands used by 5G Ultra Wideband. Check the exact model’s compatibility before buying a phone or changing carriers. T-Mobile’s coverage-map information and Verizon’s coverage map describe these qualifications.
A new phone cannot extend a carrier’s underlying network footprint. It can only determine which available network features your device can use.

Coverage is only one part of choosing a plan
Even when two networks reach the same places, the plans available to you can differ. Check current monthly cost, taxes and fees, data prioritization, hotspot limits, roaming, and any address-specific service conditions directly with the provider. Eligibility and terms can change, and the statewide comparison does not identify one best plan for every North Dakota reader. CoverageMap’s plan listings are examples, not a substitute for confirming current terms with a provider.

The statewide figures cannot determine which carrier is best on a particular rural route or at a specific rural address. AT&T leads CoverageMap’s listed area-coverage measure, but modeled outdoor coverage and statewide statistics do not establish reliable service at every location. Compare the FCC map and carrier maps for the exact route and destinations, then seek an address-specific or local check where possible.
