DVD/VCR combo decks are no longer a current mainstream product category. As of 20 October 2026, the manufacturer records that can be verified show representative Philips DVD/VHS players and recorders, plus LG’s DVD-recorder/Hi-Fi-VCR combination, as discontinued. JVC and Panasonic documentation is archived or describes production-ended hardware. You can still buy one, but the realistic sources are used, refurbished, or new-old-stock units rather than a new mass-market launch.
That distinction matters because a combo deck may be exactly what you need for playing an old tape, yet unsuitable for recording, dubbing, your television’s inputs, your region, or the condition of your tape archive.

What a DVD/VCR combo actually does
A combo deck puts a VHS transport and a DVD drive in one chassis. Early models were mainly convenient playback machines: you could watch a cassette or a disc without owning two separate components. Later recorders added blank-disc recording and a way to copy eligible VHS material to DVD, often through a one-touch or guided dubbing function.

A DVD/VHS player or combo player normally means playback only. A DVD recorder/VCR combo is the class that may record television or dub VHS to a recordable disc. Philips described its DVDR3545V/F7 as an all-in-one unit that “plays and records on both DVDs and VHS tapes” and supports direct dubbing; that model is discontinued. Do not assume that a slot for a DVD means the deck can write to one.

Are any companies still making them?
No verified mainstream manufacturer in the available current records is offering a new DVD/VCR combo line as of 20 October 2026. Philips lists the DVP3355V/F7 as a “DVD and VHS Combo” but marks it discontinued. Its DVDR3545V/F7 DVD recorder/VCR is also marked discontinued and no longer available. LG’s LGXBR446 page states that the product has been discontinued. JVC’s HR-XVC33U material is archived, and Panasonic’s DMR-E250V page describes a historical HDD/DVD/VHS recorder rather than a current product.
This is a category conclusion, not a claim that every last unit has vanished from every country. Retailers and marketplace sellers can still have factory-sealed old stock, refurbished machines, or inventory imported from another region. Those listings are legacy supply, not evidence of an active production run.
Why production ended
VHS relies on motors, belts, pinch rollers, heads, loading gears, and a tape path that can wear even when a machine is stored. DVD drives also develop laser, spindle, tray, and capacitor faults. At the same time, streaming, downloads, Blu-ray, hard-disk recording, and computer capture reduced demand for a device built around two declining formats. Funai’s VHS-equipment production ended in July 2016, a useful historical marker for the end of large-scale VHS hardware manufacturing, although it does not date every combo model or prove that no old inventory remains.

How combo models evolved
Playback combinations
The first wave combined VHS playback (and sometimes VHS recording) with DVD playback. Their appeal was fewer cables and one remote. Output choices commonly reflected the television era in which they were sold: composite video and stereo audio were nearly universal, while S-video or component video appeared on some models.

Recorder and dubbing combinations
Later machines added DVD recording, multi-format disc support, and menus for copying from one mechanism to the other. JVC’s archived HR-XVC33U documentation says users can dub “non copyrighted material only.” Some recorders could copy VHS to DVD, DVD to VHS, or both, subject to the disc type, recording mode, and copy-protection rules.
Hard-disk staging
High-end examples added a hard disk between the VHS and DVD sections. Panasonic’s DMR-E250V page describes an HDD+DVD+VHS recorder with one-touch multiway dubbing. A hard disk could make editing and arranging recordings easier before burning a final disc, but it also adds another aging storage device and does not make the unit current or easier to service.

Use the exact model number and manual, not a seller’s shortened title, to establish which column applies. “Combo” describes the presence of both drives; it does not guarantee recording.
What to check before buying a remaining unit
1. Decide whether you need playback or conversion
For occasional viewing, a playback combo may be enough. For VHS-to-DVD work, search specifically for “DVD recorder/VCR combo” and confirm that the machine records to a disc type you can obtain. If your goal is a digital file for a computer or phone, a DVD recorder creates an intermediate disc and may not be the shortest workflow.

2. Confirm video outputs and television compatibility
Legacy decks usually provide composite video and left/right analog audio. Some add S-video or component video. HDMI is not a guaranteed feature and is uncommon on older combo designs; an HDMI socket on a television does not make a composite-only deck plug-and-play. You may need a standards-compliant analog-to-HDMI converter, and the converter can introduce scaling, latency, or format limitations.
Read the television and converter instructions together. A deck that outputs an analog 480i signal may work through one converter and fail through another, especially with a television that no longer accepts the source’s timing. If the seller cannot identify the outputs with a photograph or manual, treat the listing as unverified.
3. Check region and format compatibility
DVD region coding can prevent a disc bought in one region from playing in a deck sold for another. VHS recording standards also vary by region; NTSC and PAL tapes and machines are not interchangeable simply because the cassette shell fits. Ask which region and television standard the specific unit supports, and match it to your tapes and discs.
4. Test both mechanical systems
Request a demonstration or use a return-protected seller. The VHS side should load, play, pause, fast-forward, rewind, and eject without grinding, slipping, chewing tape, or stopping after a few seconds. The DVD side should open its tray, recognize a known-good commercial disc, navigate menus, and eject reliably. Test the remote, because many setup and dubbing functions are inaccessible from front-panel buttons alone.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
5. Treat “new” carefully
New-old-stock can be factory-sealed yet still contain aged belts, capacitors, lubricants, or an optical pickup that has spent years in storage. A refurbished deck is not automatically better, but a seller who states what was replaced, demonstrates operation, supplies the original remote, and offers a return period reduces your risk. Keep the invoice and model number for service documentation.
How to transfer VHS to DVD with a recorder combo
A recorder combo can be a practical tool for personal preservation when the model supports dubbing. The exact menu names differ, so use the manual for the final button sequence, but the workflow is generally:
- Inspect the tape. Do not insert a cassette with visible mold, severe wrinkling, a broken shell, or a loose flap. A contaminated tape can spread debris through the transport; a specialist cleaning and transfer service is safer.
- Choose compatible blank media. Confirm whether the deck accepts DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, or another format, and whether recording is finalized in the machine. A disc that records may still need finalization before another player can read it.
- Connect the deck to the television. Use the available composite, S-video, or component connection to monitor the tape and on-screen menus. If the television lacks those inputs, connect through a suitable converter.
- Insert the blank disc and the VHS cassette. Set the disc recording mode and quality. Longer modes fit more hours but reduce picture quality; the manual’s table is the authority for each model’s capacity.
- Start the deck’s dubbing function. Select VHS-to-DVD (or the equivalent source and destination), cue the tape, and begin recording. Do not press fast-forward, change inputs, or power off while the deck is writing.
- Monitor the entire transfer. A two-hour tape can require roughly two hours of real time, and a damaged cassette may stop the transport. Watch for tracking problems, a frozen counter, audio loss, or a disc error.
- Stop and finalize the disc. Use the recorder’s finalize or close-session command if required. Until finalized, many DVD players and computers will not recognize the recording.
- Verify on another player or computer. Play the finished disc from the beginning, check chapter navigation and audio, and make a second copy or a digital capture if the material is irreplaceable.
Manufacturers restrict dubbing of protected commercial material. JVC’s HR-XVC33U description explicitly limits dubbing to “non copyrighted material only.” Follow the law where you live and make sure you have the rights needed for the tapes; personal ownership of a cassette does not automatically grant permission to reproduce copyrighted programs.

Buying a legacy deck makes sense when you have many tapes, want immediate control, or expect to watch VHS regularly. For a small archive, a transfer service can cost less than locating a reliable recorder, blank discs, converters, and a replacement remote. It also avoids exposing fragile tapes to a worn transport. Ask the service what file format or disc it delivers, whether it handles NTSC or PAL, how it treats damaged or copy-protected material, and how your originals are tracked and returned.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
A service is especially sensible for moldy, valuable, or one-of-a-kind tapes. Do not let a general-purpose deck repeatedly attempt to load a cassette that is shedding debris; the damage can spread to the machine and the tape.
Common problems and practical fixes
The television shows no picture
Select the television input that matches the cable, verify that the deck is powered and set to the correct output, and remove any unnecessary switch boxes. If the deck only has analog outputs and the television only has HDMI, use a compatible converter rather than a passive cable adapter.
The VHS picture rolls, tears, or drops out
Try the deck’s tracking control and a different cassette. Persistent distortion can indicate dirty heads, stretched tape, or a failing transport. Stop playback if the tape is being pulled sideways or folded; continuing can destroy the recording.
The DVD will not play or record
Check region coding, disc type, recording mode, and whether a recordable disc has already been finalized or closed. Clean, known-good media and the original remote help distinguish a setup error from a failing optical drive.
Dubbing stops partway through
Inspect the tape for a jam or end-of-tape problem, confirm adequate disc capacity, and check whether the source triggers copy-protection detection. If the same point fails repeatedly, a professional transfer may recover more of the tape without further mechanical stress.
How to store tapes and discs after conversion
- Store VHS cassettes upright in a cool, dry, stable environment away from magnets, heaters, direct sunlight, and rapid temperature changes.
- Keep tapes rewound but do not repeatedly shuttle them just to rewind; every transport cycle adds wear.
- Use clean, labeled discs and make at least one additional digital copy for important recordings.
- Record the source tape, date, standard (NTSC or PAL), and any playback issues in your archive notes.
- Retain the original tapes even after a successful transfer until the new copies have been checked and backed up.
Bottom line for shoppers in 2026
DVD/VCR combos are legacy hardware, not a category with a current mainstream manufacturer. You can still find useful machines, but buy by verified function and condition: playback versus recording, supported region and disc formats, available outputs, working remote, demonstrated tape and disc mechanisms, and a meaningful return policy. For a one-time or high-value conversion, compare the total risk and cost with a professional transfer service. A careful choice can keep an old tape collection usable; an untested “new” listing can leave you with two aging mechanisms and no practical way to return them.
