DVD Player to Smart TV: How to Connect It and Choose the Right Input

Use HDMI when both devices have it; otherwise match the DVD player’s analog output to a supported TV input and select that source.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To hook up a DVD player to a smart TV, connect the player’s HDMI OUT to the TV’s HDMI IN if both have HDMI, then use the TV remote’s Input or Source control to select that HDMI port. If the player has only older analog outputs, use a matching component or composite input on the TV and select that input instead.

Check the ports on both devices first

Look at the back and sides of the DVD player and TV. Identify the player’s output jacks and the TV’s input jacks: connect from a jack marked OUT on the player to one marked IN on the TV. The ports and labels available vary by model and region, so consult the manuals for your exact devices if the jacks are unclear.

  • HDMI: A flat, wide port labeled HDMI. Use it when both devices have one. Sony recommends HDMI for optimum picture quality when the DVD player has an HDMI jack. (Sony Help Guide)
  • Composite AV: Usually three round RCA connections: yellow for video, white for left audio, and red for right audio. (Panasonic instructions)
  • Component video: Three video connections labeled Y, PB, and PR—typically green, blue, and red—plus separate red and white audio connections. (Panasonic instructions)

Some TVs use a small multi-pole analog jack instead of full-size RCA sockets. The required extension cable can depend on the TV model and region; check the manual and any accessories supplied with the TV before buying a cable. (Sony; Sony terminal information)

Connect the DVD player with HDMI

  1. With both devices off, connect an HDMI cable from the DVD player’s HDMI OUT to an available HDMI IN on the TV.
  2. Turn on the TV and DVD player.
  3. On the TV remote, press Input or Source (some models use a TV/Video or Function control), then choose the HDMI input number you used. The exact control name varies by TV. (Panasonic; LG)
  4. Insert a disc and press Play on the player.

Connect with composite or component cables

Composite AV: yellow, white, and red

Connect yellow to the video jack at both ends, white to the left (L) audio jacks, and red to the right (R) audio jacks. Turn on both devices, select the corresponding Video or AV input on the TV, then play a disc. The colored plugs must connect to matching jacks; composite is not the same connection as component video.

Component video: green, blue, and red, plus audio

Connect the video leads to the matching TV and player labels: green to Y, blue to PB, and red to PR. Then connect the separate white and red audio leads to the matching left and right audio jacks. Select the TV’s component input. A component video connection without its separate audio leads may show a picture but produce no sound. (Panasonic instructions)

If the DVD player and TV have no matching ports

Do not assume that a generic adapter will work. Check both manuals to see whether the TV supports the player’s output format or requires a particular analog extension lead. If the player has composite output and the TV has only HDMI inputs, a conversion device may be needed, but compatibility depends on the exact devices and converter. Verify the required connections and any power needs before buying; the available manufacturer guidance does not establish compatibility for a particular converter.

Fix a black screen, “No signal,” or missing audio

  • Black screen or “No signal”: Confirm that the DVD player is powered on, both cable ends are firmly seated, and the TV is set to the exact HDMI, AV, or component input you connected. Check that the cable runs from player OUT to TV IN.
  • Picture but no sound over component: Check the separate red and white audio leads and make sure they are connected to the matching audio jacks.
  • RCA plugs do not fit the TV: Check the TV manual for the correct model-specific analog extension cable or confirm that the TV supports that analog connection. Do not assume any 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable has the right wiring.
  • Considering an ARC port: ARC is for audio-system connections; do not treat it as a DVD video input unless the TV manual explicitly documents that use. For the DVD picture, select a supported TV video input. (LG connection guide)
