The fins help it swim; they are not just decorative “ears.” Despite the familiar pink imagery, dumbo octopuses are usually pale or unpigmented, according to NOAA’s overview. Their real message is a conservation one: research indicates that damage to cold-water coral habitat can affect these mobile animals, though the population impact has not been quantified.
What is a dumbo octopus?
“Dumbo octopus” is a common name for finned deep-sea octopods in the cirrate group. NOAA’s educational overview uses the genus name Grimpoteuthis and explains that the nickname comes from the large fins above the eyes, reminiscent of Dumbo’s ears. The common name covers multiple species, not one single animal.

These octopuses have a mantle—the muscular body region that contains organs and gills—and arms joined by webbing. Their appearance can be striking on camera, but footage does not always reveal enough to identify an individual to species.
Is a dumbo octopus pink?
Pink is a common visual shorthand, but it is not a reliable description of the group as a whole. NOAA says dumbo octopuses are usually pale or unpigmented and lack chromatophores, the pigment cells used by many cephalopods to change color. They therefore cannot color-change for camouflage in the familiar way that many other octopuses can.

Color can vary in an individual image or observation, and lighting at depth also shapes how an animal appears. A pink illustration or costume should not be mistaken for evidence that the group is generally pink.
How does it swim?
The fins are functional. Finned deep-sea octopods rely primarily on them for locomotion rather than the jet propulsion used by many other octopuses. The webbed arms also help with swimming, according to NOAA’s account of a Grimpoteuthis bathynectes recorded in 2005.

In that observation, the white octopus was filmed 200 miles off Oregon at 6,600 feet, near hydrothermal vent fields associated with the Juan de Fuca Ridge. NOAA’s transcript describes its ear-like fins and webbed arms as helping it swim. Another unusual movement appeared in Gulf of Mexico footage from a 2014 expedition: a Grimpoteuthis octopod curled its arms into tight spirals. NOAA reported that the posture had not previously been observed, but the animal was not collected, so researchers could not confirm its species.

How deep can dumbo octopuses live?
They live in the deep sea, but a sighting at a particular depth is an observation, not automatically a maximum for the entire group. NOAA records a dumbo octopus at 900 meters (2,950 feet) during its 2016 Chukchi Borderlands expedition, and its educational page also notes one observed in Papahānaumokuākea at more than 5,250 feet (1,600 meters).

A 2020 study by Alan J. Jamieson and Michael Vecchione reported in situ video-lander observations of demersal Grimpoteuthis sp. at 5,760 and 6,957 meters in the Indian Ocean. The authors said those sightings extended the known maximum cephalopod depth range by 1,812 meters and raised their estimate of potential benthic habitat available to cephalopods from 75% to 99% of the global seafloor. These are the study’s findings about observations and estimated potential habitat, not proof that all dumbo octopus species live at those depths or occupy all of that seafloor. What does a dumbo octopus eat?
NOAA’s overview lists snails, worms, bivalves, isopods, and other small prey in its description of dumbo octopuses. Treat that as a group-level summary rather than a confirmed menu for every species: observing deep-sea feeding directly is difficult, and the listed prey should not be assumed to apply identically to every animal.

What do scientists still not know?
Remote observations can establish where an animal appeared and what it did in view of a camera, but they may not settle its species identity or explain the function of every feature. In the 2014 Gulf of Mexico observation, NOAA could identify the octopod as belonging to Grimpoteuthis, but said collection would have been needed to confirm the species.

NOAA’s 2005 Ocean Today transcript also leaves open questions about how well these octopuses see and what the small sense organs on their arms, called cirri, do. The transcript does not answer those questions; they remain useful reminders that deep-sea footage reveals behavior without making every aspect of an animal’s biology known.

Why does cold-water coral habitat matter?
A 2018 peer-reviewed hatchling study concluded that Grimpoteuthis hatchlings emerge as competent juveniles, based on their morphology and functional inferences. The authors also said cold-water octocorals appear important as natal habitat and that destroying them through bottom trawling or mining will affect populations of mobile animals such as dumbo octopods. That is a research-based conservation concern, not a quantified forecast of how much any population will change.
NOAA’s broader description of deep-sea octopus habitat includes cold, oxygen-rich water and features such as rocky canyon walls, volcanic slopes, and boulder-strewn seafloors. Those are general notes about deep-sea octopuses, not an exclusive habitat checklist for every dumbo octopus. The specific concern raised by the hatchling paper is that damage to cold-water octocorals can remove habitat relevant to early life.
