Use Aurora PostgreSQL with embedded DuckDB when your application already runs on PostgreSQL and analysts need to join transactional tables with Parquet or Iceberg data in Amazon S3 without a loading pipeline. Choose Amazon Redshift when analytics needs an independent, distributed warehouse for many concurrent users, large scans, and warehouse-specific governance. Choose Redshift Serverless when demand is intermittent or unpredictable and automatic capacity management is worth paying for active compute time. There is no generally valid speed or price winner. Measure both designs with representative data, concurrency, retention, and query patterns before committing.
The short decision
| Question | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Must queries combine live PostgreSQL rows with files in S3? | Aurora PostgreSQL with embedded DuckDB | DuckDB runs in the Aurora cluster, reads Parquet and Iceberg directly from S3, and can join those rows with local PostgreSQL tables without a separate copy. |
| Do analytics users need independent capacity from the application database? | Amazon Redshift | Redshift is a separate, distributed, columnar warehouse, so analytical compute and storage can be managed independently of Aurora’s OLTP resources. |
| Are query volumes irregular, seasonal, or difficult to forecast? | Redshift Serverless | Serverless automatically provisions and scales capacity, charges for active compute rather than idle provisioned compute, and bills managed storage separately. |
| Is PostgreSQL compatibility and existing tooling the priority? | Aurora with DuckDB | Results are returned as standard PostgreSQL rows, allowing existing drivers, ORMs, and business-intelligence tools to remain in the path. |
| Will hundreds or thousands of users run warehouse workloads at once? | Redshift, potentially with concurrency scaling | Its MPP architecture and temporary concurrency-scaling clusters are designed to absorb analytical queues without using the application database. |
How Aurora PostgreSQL with DuckDB executes analytics
Foreign tables point at lake data
Aurora PostgreSQL’s analytics capability defines foreign tables whose metadata identifies data in Amazon S3, AWS Glue, or S3 Tables. The files remain in object storage; Aurora does not first ingest every row into its own tables. AWS describes the design this way: “Aurora PostgreSQL runs your analytical queries inside your DB cluster, reading Iceberg and Parquet data directly from Amazon S3, without moving it into Aurora or running a separate system.”

This matters for teams that already maintain a PostgreSQL schema. A reporting query can address a local orders table and an S3 Parquet fact set in one SQL statement, rather than exporting the orders table, waiting for a load job, and querying a second system. The approach removes a copy step, but it does not make S3 reads free: scan volume, request behavior, network path, and cache effectiveness still affect latency and cost.

DuckDB is embedded in the database process
DuckDB supplies the analytical execution engine inside the Aurora PostgreSQL cluster. It evaluates analytical plans in process, applying predicate pushdown and column pruning so that filters and selected columns can reduce the bytes read from lake files. Repeated scans may benefit from local caching. A join between a PostgreSQL table and an S3-backed foreign table therefore completes within the same database environment instead of exchanging data through an external ETL service.

The output is exposed as ordinary PostgreSQL result rows. The design is especially useful when an application needs a transactional answer enriched with a large historical or semi-structured data set.
Analytical features available in the managed path
AWS documents support for aggregations, grouping, ordering, joins, common table expressions, prepared statements, EXPLAIN and EXPLAIN ANALYZE, CREATE TABLE AS (CTAS), and materialized views. Those features allow a team to inspect a plan, persist a curated result, or refresh a repeatedly used summary instead of rescanning raw files for every dashboard request.
Query memory is controlled by aurora_analytics.query_mem. If an intermediate result exceeds available memory, the engine can spill it to local storage. Spilling prevents some failures but introduces additional I/O, so a query that technically succeeds may still be too slow for an interactive service. CloudWatch and Performance Insights can be used alongside normal PostgreSQL workload metrics to distinguish file-scan pressure, memory pressure, and contention with application traffic.

The trade-off: shared resources
Running analytics in the Aurora cluster keeps data close to the application, but the cluster remains a shared operational boundary. CPU, memory, local spill space, connections, and I/O used by long scans are resources that the PostgreSQL workload may also need. Read replicas, workload scheduling, sensible statement limits, and query-plan inspection can reduce interference, but they do not turn Aurora into an independently scaled warehouse. If an executive dashboard, ad-hoc notebook, and batch aggregation all arrive during a transactional peak, you must size and govern the Aurora environment for that combined load.
Can Aurora query Parquet or Iceberg without loading it?
Yes, for the documented Aurora analytics feature, the source files stay in Amazon S3 and are addressed through foreign-table metadata. Parquet supplies columnar files; Iceberg supplies table metadata and snapshot semantics. Aurora reads the required files during query execution rather than requiring a full import into Aurora storage.
“Without loading” does not mean “without reading.” A query that selects many columns, omits selective predicates, or repeatedly scans a large date range can still read substantial data from S3. Write predicates that can be pushed down, select only needed columns, partition lake data along common filters, and use materialized views or CTAS for results that are requested frequently. Validate the effect with EXPLAIN ANALYZE and CloudWatch rather than assuming that a file format alone guarantees interactive speed.

Managed Aurora DuckDB versus the pg_duckdb extension
The terms are related but not interchangeable.
| Dimension | Aurora PostgreSQL analytics feature | pg_duckdb |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | AWS-managed Aurora PostgreSQL cluster. | An extension installed in a PostgreSQL distribution that supports it. |
| Analytical engine | DuckDB embedded and integrated by the Aurora service. | DuckDB embedded in PostgreSQL, with automatic use for analytical SQL as documented by the project. |
| Lake formats | Documented direct access to S3 Parquet and Iceberg through Aurora foreign tables. | Project documentation describes read/write support for Parquet, CSV, JSON, Iceberg, and Delta Lake across cloud object stores. |
| Cloud integrations | AWS services such as S3, Glue, and S3 Tables are part of the managed design. | The project documents out-of-the-box MotherDuck integration; deployment and support depend on the PostgreSQL distribution. |
| Operational responsibility | AWS controls the managed feature’s packaging, upgrades, and service integration. | You must confirm extension availability, version compatibility, security review, and support with your PostgreSQL provider. |
Choose pg_duckdb only after checking the exact PostgreSQL distribution and extension version you operate. An extension that works on self-managed PostgreSQL is not automatically available, supported, or equivalent on Aurora. Conversely, the Aurora-managed path is AWS-specific and may not be portable to another PostgreSQL service.

Massively parallel processing
AWS describes an Amazon Redshift data warehouse as “an enterprise-class relational database query and management system.” Redshift combines massively parallel processing (MPP), columnar storage, compression encodings, compute nodes, slices, and a leader node. The leader node coordinates client queries and distributes work; compute slices scan and transform data in parallel.
Table distribution determines where rows live across slices, while sort design affects how efficiently ranges can be skipped. Poor distribution can create data movement during joins; an unsuitable sort order can force wider scans. Warehouse performance therefore depends not just on cluster size, but also on distribution choices, sort keys, compression, statistics, and the shape of the SQL.
What Redshift separates from Aurora
Redshift is a distinct analytics system. Loading operational data into it creates a second copy and introduces pipeline or replication latency, but it also isolates long scans, joins, and dashboard bursts from the PostgreSQL application. That separation lets the warehouse team tune capacity, schemas, permissions, workload queues, and retention for analytics without changing the Aurora instance serving transactions.
Redshift is intended for BI, reporting, ETL, data mining, and general analytics clients. It is usually the stronger fit when the canonical analytical model is dimensional or denormalized, queries scan billions of rows, and many users need predictable warehouse service at the same time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Concurrency scaling
When queues exceed configured capacity, Redshift concurrency scaling can add temporary cluster capacity. AWS says the service can support thousands of concurrent users and queries; scaling-cluster charges apply only while those clusters actively run queries. The feature helps absorb bursts, but it does not remove the need to design tables, queues, and workload priorities. A consistently saturated warehouse may need a larger or differently configured base environment rather than relying on temporary capacity for every request.

Redshift Serverless: when automatic capacity is worth it
Redshift Serverless automatically provisions and intelligently scales capacity. It has no compute charge while idle, and on-demand compute is metered in RPU-hours, billed per second with a 60-second minimum. Managed storage is billed separately. Base and maximum capacity settings provide controls for both performance and spending.
Serverless is a natural candidate for intermittent reporting, development environments, seasonal analysis, and workloads whose concurrency is hard to forecast. It is less attractive when a team needs continuously predictable throughput and already has a well-utilized provisioned warehouse, because active RPU consumption and storage still need to be modeled. Pricing rules and rates can vary by Region and change over time; check the current regional pricing page before approving a budget.
Head-to-head comparison
| Axis | Aurora PostgreSQL with DuckDB | Amazon Redshift |
|---|---|---|
| Data locality | Queries local PostgreSQL tables and S3 Parquet/Iceberg foreign tables in one Aurora environment. | Queries data stored in a separate warehouse; lake and operational sources generally require loading, external-table patterns, or a replication path. |
| Data movement | Minimizes movement for lake reads and local joins; files remain in S3. | Usually introduces a warehouse copy or a managed integration, trading movement for warehouse isolation. |
| OLTP/OLAP isolation | Shared Aurora cluster; analytical resource use can contend with transactions. | Independent warehouse resources isolate analytical scans from Aurora transactions. |
| Concurrency behavior | Bounded by Aurora instance resources, connections, memory, and spill capacity. | MPP execution plus optional concurrency scaling for queue bursts; designed for many simultaneous analytics users. |
| SQL and tooling | PostgreSQL rows, drivers, ORMs, prepared statements, CTEs, and familiar explain tools. | Warehouse SQL and client ecosystem oriented to BI, reporting, ETL, and analytics. |
| Lake access | Direct documented access to S3 Parquet and Iceberg through Aurora foreign tables. | Strong warehouse capabilities; the exact lake access path depends on the Redshift features and external-table design you select. |
| Scaling model | Scale Aurora instances and manage shared database resources; DuckDB executes within the cluster. | Scale warehouse compute independently; Serverless can adjust capacity automatically. |
| Operational ownership | AWS-managed Aurora feature, with PostgreSQL workload administration still required. | Warehouse administration includes distribution, sort, compression, workload management, and ingestion design. |
| Billing mechanics | Instance class, storage, I/O configuration, S3 reads, and cache effectiveness all contribute. | Provisioned or Serverless compute, storage, concurrency-scaling usage where applicable, and data movement contribute. |
Cost and concurrency: how to compare fairly
Aurora’s cost variables
An Aurora analytics estimate must include the PostgreSQL instance class, storage, I/O configuration, S3 reads, and the degree to which local caching prevents repeated object-store scans. A low-copy design can still become expensive if many users repeatedly scan broad S3 ranges or if analytics forces you to choose a larger Aurora instance to protect response times. Include the cost of replicas or a larger cluster if isolation is needed, even though the files themselves remain in S3.

Redshift’s cost variables
For provisioned Redshift, model the warehouse compute footprint, storage, data loading or replication, and any concurrency-scaling activity. For Serverless, model RPU-hours during active queries, the 60-second minimum for each metered period, managed storage, and the chosen base and maximum capacity settings. An idle Serverless workgroup avoids compute charges, but it does not eliminate storage charges or the cost of active bursts.
A workload-based comparison method
- Use the same Region and retention period. Regional rates, object-store placement, and retention materially change the result.
- Capture identical data volumes. Include current data, historical retention, file sizes, partitioning, and expected growth.
- Replay representative SQL. Include point lookups, broad scans, joins, aggregations, dashboard refreshes, and the heaviest scheduled jobs.
- Test concurrency, not only one fast query. Run the expected number of simultaneous users and include the burst pattern that causes queues.
- Measure end-to-end latency and bytes read. Record S3 scan volume, cache-hit behavior, spill activity, queue time, and warehouse scaling events.
- Add operational work. Count ingestion, schema maintenance, backups, monitoring, permissions, incident response, and the people required to tune each platform.
- Repeat at growth points. A design that wins at one terabyte may lose when retention, users, or refresh frequency doubles.
The evidence supports mechanics, not a universal winner. A comparison that excludes concurrency, S3 reads, or pipeline operations is incomplete even if its hourly compute prices look precise.
Which workloads favor Aurora with DuckDB?
PostgreSQL-centric applications
Choose Aurora when the application schema is already authoritative in PostgreSQL and analysts need fresh transactional context. Examples include joining current orders, accounts, or entitlements with historical events in S3, producing an operational report without waiting for a warehouse load, or exposing an analytics endpoint through the same PostgreSQL-compatible driver stack.

Low-copy lake exploration
Aurora is attractive when data scientists and engineers need to explore Parquet or Iceberg while retaining joins to small relational reference tables. Predicate pushdown, column pruning, and local caching can make selective queries efficient without first building a full ingestion pipeline. Keep the workload bounded and monitor its impact on the application cluster.
Transactionally coordinated results
Because local joins execute in the PostgreSQL environment, a workflow can read application tables and produce a CTAS table or materialized view using the same database context. This is useful when the result must align closely with transactional state. It is not a substitute for a warehouse when the result must serve a large, independent user population.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which workloads favor Redshift?
Independent analytical capacity
Use Redshift when the application database must remain insulated from scans, joins, and dashboard bursts. A separate warehouse lets analytics teams scale and tune their environment without resizing the transactional cluster or risking application latency.
Large distributed joins and scans
Redshift’s MPP slices, columnar storage, compression, distribution, and sort design target workloads that process large volumes repeatedly. The benefit is greatest when tables are modeled for the warehouse and joins are distributed deliberately. It is less compelling to build a warehouse solely to avoid a small number of selective queries that Aurora can answer directly from S3.
Many concurrent users and governed reporting
Centralized BI, scheduled reporting, ETL, and data-mining workloads often need queue management, warehouse permissions, curated schemas, and predictable analytical isolation. Redshift’s concurrency-scaling option can add temporary capacity when configured queues exceed the base cluster.
When Redshift Serverless is the better Redshift choice
Serverless fits teams that cannot predict when analysis will run: a monthly close, a seasonal campaign, occasional investigations, or development work that sits idle between sessions. Automatic provisioning removes routine capacity planning, while base and maximum capacity settings impose guardrails. Compare its active RPU consumption with a provisioned cluster under the same query and concurrency replay; “serverless” changes the capacity model, not the amount of work your queries perform.

Operational and governance considerations
Keep application reliability explicit on Aurora
- Set statement and workload policies so exploratory scans cannot monopolize the cluster.
- Watch CPU, memory, connections, storage, I/O, spill behavior, and transaction latency together.
- Use
EXPLAINandEXPLAIN ANALYZEto verify predicate pushdown, column selection, join strategy, and unexpected full scans. - Materialize stable summaries when the same expensive query serves many readers.
- Test failover, replica behavior, and recovery with the analytics feature enabled.
Design Redshift as a warehouse, not a large PostgreSQL table
- Choose distribution and sort strategies that match the largest joins and common filters.
- Apply compression and maintain statistics so slices can skip irrelevant data.
- Define workload queues and priorities before opening the system to ad-hoc users.
- Monitor queue time separately from execution time; concurrency scaling addresses queued demand, not inefficient SQL.
- Budget for ingestion latency and data quality checks when operational data is copied into the warehouse.
Using both: Aurora zero-ETL integration with Redshift
You do not have to force every workload into one engine. Aurora PostgreSQL zero-ETL integration with Redshift became generally available on October 15, 2024. AWS reported a test processing more than 1.4 million transactions per minute—equivalent to about 23.8 million insert, update, or delete row operations per minute—and making those changes available in Redshift in single-digit seconds.
Those figures are AWS-reported test results on specified large Aurora instances, not a promise for every topology, schema, transaction mix, or Region. Treat zero-ETL as a way to reduce custom pipeline work and replication lag while preserving a dedicated warehouse for heavy analytics. Validate throughput, lag, failure handling, schema changes, and cost with your own workload. Keep direct Aurora-DuckDB queries for use cases that need immediate joins with local state; use Redshift for broad, concurrent warehouse analysis.
A practical selection process
- Classify each query. Label it as transactional, operational reporting, lake exploration, dashboard aggregation, scheduled ETL, or ad-hoc warehouse analysis.
- Mark freshness requirements. “Same transaction,” “seconds,” “minutes,” and “daily” imply different integration designs.
- Estimate concurrency. Record average users, peak users, simultaneous dashboards, scheduled jobs, and burst duration.
- Map data movement. Identify which tables must stay in PostgreSQL, which files are already in S3, and which data can tolerate a warehouse copy.
- Set isolation boundaries. Decide whether an analytical spike may consume resources needed by the application.
- Build two small proofs of concept. Run the same representative files and PostgreSQL tables through Aurora-DuckDB and Redshift or Redshift Serverless.
- Inspect failure modes. Test large joins, skewed keys, missing statistics, S3 access failures, memory spills, queue saturation, and partial integration outages.
- Choose per workload if necessary. A hybrid architecture is valid when immediate application joins and independent warehouse reporting are both first-class requirements.
Common pitfalls and how to correct them
Assuming direct S3 access means zero latency
Direct reads avoid a load step but still require file access and execution. Correct the assumption by partitioning data for common predicates, selecting only needed columns, checking pushdown in the plan, and measuring bytes read.
Running warehouse-scale concurrency on the application cluster
Aurora can answer analytical SQL, but a large number of simultaneous scans can compete with transactions. Start with concurrency limits and workload monitoring; move sustained or unpredictable demand to Redshift when protecting application latency is more important than eliminating a data copy.
Expecting Redshift to preserve transaction-level freshness automatically
A separate warehouse normally introduces an ingestion or replication path. If seconds-level availability is required, evaluate zero-ETL or another CDC design and measure its lag and recovery behavior rather than assuming that a loaded table is current.
Comparing only list prices
Include S3 reads, cache behavior, storage, replication, concurrency scaling, Serverless RPU minimums, operational labor, and the cost of resizing Aurora to protect OLTP. A lower nominal compute rate can lose once these workload-specific costs are included.
Treating pg_duckdb and Aurora’s managed feature as identical
Confirm supported versions, deployment controls, extension packaging, security posture, and vendor support. The project extension’s documented format and cloud integrations do not establish that the same options are available in every managed PostgreSQL service.

Approve Redshift when analytics deserves its own resource boundary, warehouse modeling, and concurrent-user capacity. Approve Redshift Serverless when that warehouse demand is real but irregular and automatic scaling is preferable to keeping provisioned capacity online.
