It remains useful mainly when you must support an older operating system or reproduce a legacy workflow. It is not the current release: by August 18, 2026, the official project had moved into the 30.x and 31.x release families. For a new installation, use the latest release your computer supports; choose 26.0.9 only for a documented compatibility or reproducibility reason.
What draw.io Desktop 26.0.9 is
draw.io Desktop is the standalone version of the draw.io/diagrams.net diagram editor. It uses Electron to package the editor as an application that runs independently of a browser. You can create and edit flowcharts, network and architecture diagrams, UML, process maps, organizational charts and other technical documentation, then save the files locally.

The names draw.io Desktop, draw.io and diagrams.net Desktop refer to the same product family. Version 26.0.9 means major release 26, minor release 0 and patch release 9; it is not a separate editor from diagrams.net. The source project and its releases are published in the official jgraph/drawio-desktop repository.
The desktop build is intended to work offline on Windows, macOS and Linux. The vendor documents the normal draw.io shapes, templates and editing features for desktop use in its desktop security documentation.

Is version 26.0.9 still available?
Historically, yes. The official release tag is v26.0.9. Open the tag or the official release archive, expand its Assets section and confirm that the file is attached to the jgraph/drawio-desktop project.
Asset retention can change, and the available evidence does not establish every 26.0.9 filename, architecture, checksum, file size or publication date. If the tag has no usable asset, do not substitute a download from an unverified mirror. A GitHub page alone is not proof that a repackaged installer elsewhere is authentic.
As of August 18, 2026, later 30.x and 31.x releases were available, including a project discussion for 31.0.2 in July 2026 (release discussion). That makes 26.0.9 a legacy build rather than a current baseline.
Why would anyone need 26.0.9?
- Older macOS: Community reports identify 26.0.9 as the last Desktop release that supports macOS Catalina 10.15. This is a community claim, not a confirmed official support matrix; verify the archived release requirements before deployment. Even on Catalina, Intel architecture, signing and Gatekeeper settings can affect installation.
- Frozen environments: An enterprise image, laboratory computer or classroom device may be unable to move to a newer Electron runtime.
- Reproducibility: Historical documentation, automated conversion or testing may require the exact 26.x behavior.
- Validated workflows: A plugin, script or export pipeline may have been tested only against this release.
Running on an old operating system does not mean the application is still security-supported. Treat the version as a compatibility exception and isolate or manage it accordingly.

Packages and platform considerations
Windows
The project README describes three Windows distribution styles, but you must confirm which were actually attached to the 26.0.9 tag:

These package behaviors come from the project’s README; they do not guarantee that every format exists in 26.0.9.
macOS
Check the archived assets for the exact 26.0.9 package and processor architecture. Do not copy the architecture or universal-package assumptions of newer releases. macOS may show Gatekeeper warnings for an old or quarantined download; use only the official release asset and follow your organization’s approved signing and allowlist process.

Look at the 26.0.9 asset list for the formats actually published, such as Debian packages, RPM or AppImage. Verify architecture and distribution-library requirements. An AppImage may need execute permission, while package-manager installs can fail because an old Electron build expects libraries no longer present. Wayland/X11 behavior also varies by distribution; later project discussions document display-stack issues in newer releases, so do not assume identical behavior for 26.0.9 (Linux discussion).

How to obtain and install it safely
- Open the official v26.0.9 tag, or start at the official releases page.
- Expand Assets and select the file matching your operating system and architecture. Do not infer a filename from a current release.
- Confirm the browser download URL belongs to GitHub release assets for
jgraph/drawio-desktop. If checksums are supplied on the release, verify them. - Back up important diagram files and test on a copy. An older editor should not overwrite a production file until imports, exports and rendering have been checked.
- On Windows, choose the installer, MSI or portable build according to privilege and deployment requirements. On macOS, review Gatekeeper and enterprise policy. On Linux, follow the package-specific permission and dependency requirements.
Keep the original installer so you can roll back after testing a newer version.
Features and offline operation
General Desktop capabilities include creating and editing diagrams, opening and saving draw.io files locally, using built-in shape libraries and templates, and importing or exporting supported diagram and image formats. Command-line export is available in the Desktop project, but the exact switches and behavior should be checked against the 26.0.9 build rather than copied from later release notes.
The desktop application is designed for offline editing. The project says it is isolated from the internet apart from its update process, and that diagram data and usage analytics are not transmitted externally. The security documentation describes offline operation on Windows, macOS and Linux. These are vendor statements, not an independent security audit.

Offline does not mean every workflow is local:
- Downloaded templates or custom libraries may require a separate online download, followed by local import.
- Cloud-storage connectors and collaboration services require connectivity and are different from opening a local file.
- Browser-only features, including some current internet-dependent smart-template functions, should not be attributed to 26.0.9.
The desktop security guide explains that the application does not provide the web app’s “import from URL” path; download the resource separately and import it instead (documentation).

Privacy, security and update behavior
The vendor states that Desktop does not send diagram data or analytics externally during normal operation. Do not turn that statement into a guarantee that an old binary is completely secure. Obsolete Electron components can have weaker compatibility with current operating systems, endpoint protection and security policies, and 26.0.9 is not presented as a maintained release.
Desktop checks GitHub at startup for a newer version and downloads updates from an AWS S3 bucket associated with GitHub. The project documents two ways to disable checks when administration requires it:
- Set the environment variable
DRAWIO_DISABLE_UPDATE=true. - Launch with the
--disable-updateoption.
Disable updates only for a clear administrative reason, and retain a centrally managed patch and rollback plan. Application state is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/draw.io on macOS and C:Users<USER-NAME>AppDataRoamingdraw.io on Windows. Those folders may contain preferences or session data; they are not substitutes for backing up diagram files.

Later release discussions show changes to both Electron and the draw.io core, so the difference is not merely cosmetic. Do not infer the Electron version used by 26.0.9 from a later 26.0.16 discussion (project discussion).

Common problems and recovery
The tag exists but no download appears
The assets may have been removed, the page may be showing a tag rather than a published release, GitHub may have failed to load the list, or the desired architecture may never have been built. Check the main release archive and the Assets section; avoid unofficial mirrors unless your organization independently verifies provenance and hashes.
The Windows installer requests administrator access
Use the MSI or no-installer build if those assets exist for 26.0.9. The project explicitly distinguishes per-machine installer, per-user MSI and portable behaviors.
Cloud features do not work
That is consistent with an offline-first installation. Distinguish editing a local file from opening cloud storage, browser collaboration or downloading a template.
A newer file behaves differently
Keep the original untouched, work on a copy, test import and export, and use the application version that created the file when exact fidelity matters. Full forward and backward compatibility should be demonstrated, not assumed.
Windows or macOS blocks the application
SmartScreen, antivirus, Gatekeeper and enterprise allowlists can block old binaries. A warning is not proof of malware, and GitHub hosting alone is not a safety guarantee; authenticate the official asset and follow your organization’s verification policy.
Alternatives
- Current draw.io Desktop: The closest replacement, with current fixes and operating-system support. See the official release page.
- diagrams.net web app: Convenient when a browser is acceptable, but not ideal for strict offline or local-only requirements (app.diagrams.net; integrations).
- Microsoft Visio: A commercial choice for Microsoft 365, Visio formats and enterprise workflows (official page).
- Lucidchart: Suited to browser collaboration and sharing, less suited to offline-first local editing (official page).
- Mermaid: Best for text-defined diagrams in code and documentation, not drag-and-drop visual editing (official project).
Verdict
Install draw.io Desktop 26.0.9 only when an older operating system, validated legacy workflow or reproducibility requirement makes it necessary. For ordinary new installations, choose the latest official Desktop release supported by the computer. Whichever version you use, download from the official repository, preserve the installer, back up diagrams and test representative files before changing versions.
